My kids aren't fans of turkey dinner. You see, sensory issues mean that mashed potatoes and stuffing are gross, and turkey takes too much time to chew, so please pass the pasta. We had turkey dinner this year only because a good portion of my husband's family got together. My 5yo ate easy mac. When it's just us, I make alfredo with chicken and mushrooms for Thanksgiving, and lasagna for Christmas. We eat pizza Christmas Eve. Don't forget to leave Santa beer/wine and cookies. Your traditions are what you make them. Some of ours are off the beaten path, but I've had a few parents tell me they wish they'd thought of that when my kids tell them stuff we do for the holidays.

Re: I'm Just That Way and That's Just Me: At my mom's suggestion

I like your mom. I don't know how you were able to stay in your regular clothes this long. I'd love to sell my current set and get a newer, more efficient set. No one notices these ones as much since they appear normal at first glance (or just snobby as hell). These are the ones that tend to live near me.

Re: ArmyWife-Style: Facebook Can Suck My Weiner

Subscribers can only see any statuses that you mark as public. Gah!

YES! My son is lactose intolerant. The school forms say that unless your child is anaphylactic they're not required to provide a substitute. So my son can forgo getting a fruit, and get the 100% juice they offer that day (assuming he likes it), or I can pay extra for him to get a Capri Sun or something. I don't want him drinking soy milk because of the mimicking of female hormones, he's getting close to puberty, he drinks almond milk at home, yadda yadda. So evidently, severe stomach cramps and diarrhea don't qualify for a milk substitution. AND, last year, they tried to tell me this is a FDA reg, and that they can't by law replace milk on a students lunch try. WTF? Yeah. I'm fighting it this year because what to lactose intolerant kids who get free lunches do? Drinking out of the fountain is NOT an acceptable alternative imo because some of those teachers are lunchroom nazis and don't let the kids get up for much at all let alone a drink when they need it. It's about principle Sorry for the book, but this really irks my chain because we even have the papers signed by the allergist.

Re: This Post is Brought to You by the Letters "T" and "P" and Our Lack There-of (Now)

Totally used to happen to us until we stopped using the toilet paper holder. I took it down for jut that reason. It was too much fun to spin the roll. It makes it easy to weed out those who are more like you than not (my opinion). I do find myself wanting more though. That's why when I go to talk about setting up respite care tomorrow, I'm going to also ask our coordinator here on post about setting up a special needs support group for parents where we can meet, have coffee, and discuss common things here on post for military families like mine.

Re: How a Bed Almost Broke a Man

That is so cute! The tone of your blog and other social network postings are so much more happy than when you were at Polk. I'm so happy for y'all that you finally get some bliss. He said that in all probability that no, these guys would NOT have been reimbursed for those baggage charges because they weren't on individual travel orders where they'd submit their travel voucher when they got back to get reimbursed for such charges. They were on unit travel orders which are totally different, and there is no travel voucher to submit at the end of the trip. Those guys would've ended up eating that money out of their personal funds had they not said anything.

Personally, if there's a group coming in from deployment, I think the airlines should just make room for their stuff, no charge, and no questions asked. Just get those soldiers HOME. And yes, if I was traveling as a civilian and got bumped due to their stuff they were bringing home, I'd totally be OK with that. I'd gladly wait to take a later flight so a soldier could get home to his/her family after deployment. Now, had this been a TDY situation, I could see it playing out a little differently.

My thing during all of this was why didn't the person working the baggage counter question and research further as to why so many of these soldiers were over their bag limit? It's not like it was only 1 or 2. It doesn't take a rocket scientist (or maybe it does) to see that when that many people are over that maybe something is amiss.

Re: Closing and Opening

Glad to see you back. My 9yo does better the more facts he knows. Like he used to be terrified of thunderstorms. We got books on weather that were age appropriate, and not that he knows the whats and the whys, he does much better. We too had an incident with tornadoes recently, and had to revisit that book. We had to explain that yes if it happens it can be very bad, but I showed him that we're prepared as best as we can be, and his dad and I have lived in other areas where tornadoes are more a norm of summer weather than an anomaly, so we know what to watch for and we'll make sure to watch and let him know if he needs to go to the basement, etc. His knowing that we're prepared took away some of the anxiety that he had about us being hurt or caught with our guard down.
