I requested direct deposit into the same account my refunds have been sent for years--didn't even have to fill in new info. Got a check anyway. Paid $7.50 to cash it at Wells Fargo, where I have a mortgage. (They told me about the fee after cashing it.) It's the cosmetics manufacturers. If women didn't (at least subliminally) believe that cosmetics would make them appear flawless they wouldn't buy them. Consider all the makeup ads you've ever seen showing a closeup of a model´s face. Not a blemish in sight. Makeup exists to create an illusion.

As women of color, it's particularly difficult for us because of our oily skin (51, and I still get breakouts), so the caking you see in the photo is often the result, since cosmetics manufacturers still cater mainly to white skin. Under hot lights, especially during a photo shoot, the makeup tends to cake up, and the makeup artist "fixes" it by adding powder; removing it and reapplying would take all day. The purpose of the makeup is to even out skin tone, not hide pimples and blemishes (usually a temporary problem caused by the combination of oily skin, makeup, and powder); those can be erased later (this is where Photoshop comes in).

Photoshop is a great thing, I believe, for correcting the light, etc. in a photo, or for making compositions, but we've come to rely on it too much, in my opinion. Many amateur photographers don't even need to know which F-stop to use on a camera because they can fix it later. Trust me, it's not just cosmetics; if you want to work in any type of creative marketing Photoshop is pretty much a requirement. (Ever wonder why a Big Mac never looks as good in real life?) Before that the alternative for flawless skin was prepubescent girls.

As far as I'm concerned, I think Beyoncé looks absolutely stunning either way.

Re: How Many DC Bureaucrats Does It Take to Fix a Calder Mobile?

As a native and a resident of the District of Columbia, I would just like to point out that we have our own separate government.
