On the other hand, at least in Apple's case (MS, Google, Amazon too), it's rarely the case that one can separate complete a product from the ecosystem. And in that case I'd say that competition is not reflexive anymore.

This is actually a similar conclusion of your article, but yours discusses it in terms of transitivity, while my comment is questioning the reflexive nature.

Re: The Monopolist

While the rest of the article stands, the mid-part on transitiveness of competition and the example used are incorrect.

The example says that if HTC competes with Apple and Dropbox competes with Apple. Basically that translates to "A competes with B, and C competes with B". Transitivity does not apply.

What I think you are referring to, at least in math terms, is reflexivity: if A competes with B then B competes with A.

Re: NoSQL tab list

Good catch! thanks

Re: Two questions about the Oracle in-memory database

That makes a lot more sense to me; the way it was written on the tons of articles I've read before posting totally confused me as hey made it sound like same data can be accessed in an either row or column way.

Re: The era of the No-Design DataBase

Edward, I think you are mixing things up: schema vs query language vs implementation.

If you think about it, not having a schema is almost equivalent with dealing with blobs. That implies quite a bit of complexity for any app that accesses that data (serialization/deserialization, versioning, type checking). Multiply that with the number of apps accessing the same data.

Basically it's another trade-off: initial speed of dev followed by higher complexity down the road vs a more involved ramp-up with a smoother maintenance over time.

The tricky thing here is that while a database that supports schemas can loosen the constrains, one that doesn't cannot help you with the basic constraints needed in the future.

Re: The era of the No-Design DataBase

I think we both can agree that there are various tones of "schema free". At one side of the options we have "complete schema free" (which is actually the my-code-only-schema) and at the other end is "recommended schema with dev & operational flexibility" (i.e. richer data types are allowed, there are some constraints imposed at the level of data types, updates to the schema are not only possible but also cheap from an operational pov).

While the flexibility of just dropping some blobs inside a storage engine is going to speed development in the first stages of an app, I once again think we can agree that the longer the app evolves and the more apps will access the same data the more complexity will have to built into the source code. And that's the time to have the latter option available.
