Hey -- the hub we ended up using can't reliably power more than 6 devices, so I wouldn't recommend it.

Yeah, I definitely share these instincts, which is what led me to the thoughts above. Good to know others have had these thoughts too :). It'd be great if D3 (or something like it) is factored to be separate from the data binding side, but I'm not holding my breath.

Well, the maximum monochromatic class (74 cells) could be made symmetric, the combination of 2 copies of the maximum monochromatic class could be made symmetric, and also I could find lots of 16x16 symmetric solutions, so all in all, I had reasons to hope. But altogether, I just knew that without taking a long shot, I didn't have the background to succeed in tackling the problem head on.

Sorry, I wanted to focus on the lessons, not the actual approach as the article was long enough as is.

My assumption in short was that there would exist a solution that was symmetric. I.e. that a grid where (x,y) = (y,x) would also be a solution. You can see the solution I pasted above is symmetric if you take top left as origin.

I didn't actually finish searching through that space, but exhausted what might have been the largest component of it.

force.nodes($scope.nodes) does that automatically, in both cases.

A previous version of this used base64, but jsurl is json-aware, which means it makes for smaller -and- more readable URLs. It's pretty awesome, have a look: https://github.com/Sage/jsurl

That said, the encoding is trivially changeable to anything that can work as a URL string. Experimentation there could be really interesting.

I haven't used Lua but I hear it's a great, small, and fast language.

The benefits of JavaScript come from its ecosystem. "Leveraging the synergies" as they say in MBA courses. Resin.io will focus on JavaScript first as well, so that may also be a factor.

At the end of the day, which one you use really depends on your specific project.

Angular adds identifiers into scope data by itself. As long as you don't delete and recreate the object, Angular will not think it's a new object and will work as expected.

While I don't agree with your take on directives, do read the last paragraph again. directives today is web components tomorrow, and web components are going to be in every browser everywhere. It's not about using a framework, it's about refactoring for the coming browser environment.

I needed to be able to add tokens to the list programmatically, so I inserted the following under the add_token function:

So afterwards I am able to add an item by using
$.TokenList.add_token_api(19, "Alabama Joachim")

Don't know if this is the best way to do this, but it does the job for me. If anyone else finds it useful, feel free to use it.
