We are seeing big moves in this regard, especially in NYC which is woefully under developed from a broadband standpoint.

Re: This Is What Happens When You Let A Monopoly Own The Last Mile

Business Class Broadband in Manhattan is worse. The situation in Brooklyn and Queens is worse than that. In Manhattan for example, there are approx 21,000 office buildings (Class A, B, C). Of this, only 500 have one unique fiber provider. The other 20k buildings are wired with either old Verizon copper and cable. From the low 40's midtown south to the edge of wall street, east and west, tens of thousands of businesses, large and small struggle with poor broadband.

One answer to the problem is fixed wireless, which is ready for primetime.

Alan

Re: Whatever Happened to Podcasting?

Great post Mark.

Your comment around analytics is spot on. Also, podcasting which enables "on-demand" listening is not live audio streaming. I bet if you ask Adam Carolla if he could get the same audience and revenue by streaming a live call-in radio show (in the car) or a podcast, than he would take the live format every day of the week.

I would add a couple of more reasons why podcasting has been slow to be adopted at scale. 1) There isn't a strong monetization engine supporting the space. The largest sellers of audio ads are the terrestrial radio companies and they have completely missed the boat on Radio 2.0 (both talk and music). There needs to be a higher ROI for the podcaster. 2) There are limited common technology platforms that can easily enable live streamed talk radio and podcasting. Video can be shot with a multitude of devices, the same can't be said for audio.

Lastly, at BlogTalkRadio, we have been at the live streaming and podcast game for quite some time. Today we are hosting close to 2,000 podcasts a day. Next quarter we expect to launch our HD solution which we believe will help solve the issue surrounding a common technology platform. - http://www.blogtalkradio.co...

Alan Levy
CEO BlogTalkRadio
www.blogtalkradio.com

Re: ReadWrite – 5 Companies That Will Define The Future Of Radio

Great article.

Have you heard of BlogTalkRadio (www.blogtalkradio.com)? BlogTalkRadio is the largest online talk radio network live streaming/archiving more than 30,000 talk radio shows a month. Apart from NPR, the companies you have mentioned are distribution platforms, primarily focused on music. NPR is wonderful, but doesn't scale.

You will hear a lot more about BlogTalkRadio in 2013.

Alan Levy
CEO

Re: BREAKING: Salesforce Laying Off Radian6 Employees and Executives

Sorry to hear that for the Radian6 employees that were let go today. the entire team at R6 did an incredible job. I do think it becomes bigger when companies, organizations, brands, etc turn their phones into publishing platforms. There is plenty of disruption waiting to happen, and its going to happen on the enterprise side.

Re: Pandora's Music Fees Are Huge!
