One practical thing young writers might try is to write stories of encounter--that is, stories about the collisions between class groups and racial groups that occur in everyday life. That might be a natural bridge between "small" stories about upper-class malaise and "big" stories about international issues. I can't think of a story that captures this, but I'm thinking a little of C.K. Williams' poem "The Singing"--it frames a type of cross-cultural encounter that is small in scope, and very familiar to writers/readers of many different backgrounds, but perhaps not widely written about.

Re: http://akuat.tumblr.com/post/2586974650

Their imprecisely worded internship description:

"Interns should expect limited involvement in editorial work during the internship itself."

Does that mean interns should expect a tiny bit of editorial work, or interns should NOT EXPECT EDITORIAL WORK?

Re: http://akuat.tumblr.com/post/734689703

Hi, Adoley! I actually don't know. I haven't read a ton of African literature--including, sadly, Things Fall Apart--but if I remember correctly, The River Between has lots of performative elements. The story is told in a way that mimics oral storytelling (which might have been what frustrated me about the language at the time), and the narrative is probably one that's been told over and over again. So it sort of fits in with what I'm talking about here, though I don't know to what extent. What do you think?

Re: Grading President Obama and My Farewell

Fixed!
