If you know those you are working with are supporting you in your work and personal endeavors, and "have your back," it's easier to be energized in doing human rights work. Having an open environment where people feel free to discuss stresses and to communicate freely is incredibly helpful. It's also important to encourage your fellow activists to take time off and take a break when things get intense, and create a culture where that is OK and supported.

Re: Travel Style + A Giveaway

Love the suitcase, so cute and useful. I have to say, I really struggle with it. Your words are comforting!

Re: Summer Reading: Notes on Books I Loved

Ah, I see. Absolutely agree-- rather than simplifying poverty and creating false dichotomies, I think it is so important to move beyond the 'single story' we are often presented with to reach a place of greater complexity. Through this rich complexity, we can design better solutions. And by recognizing the interconnectedness of everything, I feel we can do a lot better, acting out of empathy rather than misplaced pity.

Re: Salone Stories: Life in the village

Thank you :)

Re: Salone Stories: Justice and Conflict in Sierra Leone

Thank you Roxanne, and your dispatches have been incredible so far. I wonder if social enterprises themselves can engage in advocacy to lobby governments to provide these things as a matter of right. It seems to go against an organization's incentives, since they have an incentive to continue making money and profiting- and won't profit if the government provides health care or clean water for free. Hopefully, as social enterprises, they can look beyond the profit and to a long term solution as well.

I also love what you're saying - maybe governments can engage social enterprises to provide the services, but ensure they are ultimately free for the people? I don't know if governments are behind due to lack of infrastructure, or lack of funding. If it's the latter, the problem may be more difficult to fix.

Re: Stories of Conflict and Love: Resurfacing: Lessons of a graduate school spring

So poetic Roxanne, and I can empathize with a lot of what you are going through! Graduate school can be exhilarating, but as we are discovering new passions and pathways of work that differ from what we did before, it can also bring about that feeling of not really feeling grounded, of not really knowing the next step. And that can make it harder to be truly present, I've found. Somehow, I think being abroad demands that kind of mindful presence -- all the challenges of daily life (and the new, exciting parts!) take up much of your mental space. Here, in the US, I find that it's harder to focus on the present. And easier to focus on that 'next step.'
