Somehow the fact that it's actually way too cold for shorts in NY right now makes this picture even more endearing for me, in that "Stars: They're Just Like Us!" way. I'm too cold-blooded to wear summer clothes until real summer rolls around, but I've seen soooo many people over the past week or so shivering in sandals, sundresses, and a big coat.

That just makes me want to see Dogtooth more, though. Hating a film can be almost as interesting as loving a film.

I Am Love was a little slow at times, but such a beautiful, emotional film, I thought. I was pleasantly surprised that Rabbit Hole wasn't just about watching people be sad, but about watching them recover-- which gave it a touch of hope. And Kidman was very, very good in it.

Hear, hear. It's captions like the one on that scan (that imply women like Jessica Rabbit DON'T exist only in cartoons) that cause dangerously unrealistic expectations of what women's bodies "should" look like.

Marilyn certainly helps balance the mostly negative portrayal of women, but I wouldn't go so far as to say she negates *all* charges of sexism. She's just not an important or interesting enough character to carry that weight.

It's true that the men in this film aren't exactly saints either, but they're written as three-dimensional characters with strengths, flaws, motivations, and agency whereas the women by and large are not. I do think much of the negative, shallow portrayal of women comes from Movie Zuckerberg's misogynistic views, and in that sense I get it. However, if Aaron Sorkin is going to claim immunity on the grounds that he was just trying to be accurate, I think we as moviegoers have the right to point out inaccuracies when we see them. At the very least, it's disingenuous on Sorkin's part to claim that this is just how Real Zuckerberg sees women when Sorkin completely ignores Real Zuckerberg's real girlfriend. Who, presumably, is not just another anonymous, coked-up nympho that Zuckerberg hooks up with once and forgets about.

How I Met Your Mother was great-- it felt like a return to form after a disappointingly subpar season. Though I have to say, it takes a lot of work to make someone as stunning as Cobie Smulders look ugly. Kudos to the makeup and wardrobe people.

I didn't think Lone Star was THAT bad, though I don't quite get all the hype either. I actually liked James Wolk here, the babyface worked for me. After all, he has to *look* like someone you'd trust, or he wouldn't be a successful con man.

What I don't understand is the tone-- it's too serious to be properly soapy, but too cheesy to be a gritty or subtle. And is it just me, or is the premise actually pretty silly? If you want to trade your dishonest lifestyle for something "real," dude, maintaining two separate marriages is not the way to do it. The show tried to set it up like he had all these reasons why he couldn't just pick one, but I'm not sure I buy it. So I fear that for the rest of the season I'll just feel like I'm watching some guy moan about a bunch of problems that he brought upon himself.

I do think Wright was, without a doubt, the perfect director for this story. For all its imperfections, I think Wright's Scott Pilgrim was absolutely the best-case scenario. (Plus a lot of its flaws don't seem to be entirely his fault, as you mentioned.)

I was more bothered by the flaws than you were, but I think it's kind of my own fault. I love the books so much that I'm having trouble not comparing the movie to the books... and the books are way better.

The second time I saw the film it was even shallower than I'd originally thought (a chip? Really?), but I enjoyed the pacing, music, and visuals more. So, OK, it's not exactly a paragon of great storytelling. It's still a minor masterpiece of exciting, innovative filmmaking-- the kind of work that reminds you what makes cinema *cinema*.

Take it from a reformed Harry Potter fanfic reader-- that video isn't so bad. There's much eerier and more disturbing out there. D:

I don't think Ron is so bad! Sure, he's kind of the Homer Simpson to Hermione's Marge, but at least he has a sense of humor unlike that stick in the mud Harry. And it's not like Harry's such a great friend either-- he's intensely self-involved. Actually, I was upset that Ginny ended up with Harry, because I thought *she* deserved better.

Come to think of it, I guess there's only one logical way to solve this conundrum: Hermione + Ginny and Harry + Ron. ;)

Oh, and PS, while we're at it? You know who was totally underrated? Neville. OK, so he's not a looker, and he is super dorky. But the way he rallies in the later books kinda brought a tear to my eye.

From what I've heard, and from the handful of episodes I've seen, S1 of BBT isn't anything special. But it's the kind of show where you can dive straight into S2 without missing a whole lot-- that's what I did. Obviously it's nothing like Breaking Bad or The Wire, but it's an excellent example of the classic sitcom. It's a really easy show to enjoy, and it's fairly consistent, so you'll probably know after a few episodes whether you like it or not.

If you do decide to get into it, let me know what you think!

Ha-- I was just going to bring up Gwyneth Paltrow too. Her ridiculous, albeit hilarious, shenanigans can't be helping him much. Weird that someone so pretentious could be married to someone so... mainstream.

I do remember some positive hype surrounding Viva La Vida (which I liked), but mostly everyone sounded surprised that they put out something decent, as if they'd forgotten how acclaimed they were just a few short years ago.

Then again, it is difficult to take seriously someone who names his daughter "Apple." Especially if his last name is Martin. Apple Martin, really?

I'm not a Coldplay fangirl or anything, but I don't get the hate either. Just a backlash they never quite recovered from, I suppose.
