I'm a canes fan and you guys just don't know how hard it is to shake that rep down in miami. We've had 1 arrent in the three years Randy Shannon has been head coach. Next you will reverse your stance and say winning is what matters while in this story and discussion everyone is trying to harp on penn states high standards and discipline. I won't continue further with my anger and misconception of miami I jsut ask you look at your arrests these past 3 years versus Miami's and Florida's it's pretty set that we are all equal admission wise and academic standard wise. I jsut rahter you realize we have been the "good" school out of these three the past 3 years.

Re: Say goodbye to Darrell Givens

And Rob Joe Pa didn't do anything special here the kid needed classes he sent him to a prep school cause that would only take a year. He didn't steer him to a juco because that would risk him beign re-recurited over a two year period. Penn State isn't the only institution that has summer school and steers kids to prep school or to finish up classes to get into the school. Just take your school for what it is not Ivy League, like every other Div 1 program it has dumb athletes and smart ahtletes and the minority of the student population that these athletes makes up does not define your school.

Re: Say goodbye to Darrell Givens

Yeah true beacon who allows crime and mischief run amuck.Plenty of schools do grdaute some very good players iwth great character but your misperception is that jsut because you hear one or two of these stories a year that Joe Pa is a great disciplinarian. Harp on a kid being a student athlete as much as you 'd liek but it is a joke in all reality you should not expect everyone to graduate you try your hardest to make tht so but it's about winning football games. Sports draws money to help fudn the education the University provides you guys are also blinded by Joe Pa developing good football players and success on the field. It's a nice thing to be able to say now since it's Joe Pa but I can Guaruntee you the next coach will not be lauded for Character, and discipline but for winning games. Joe Pa get's turned a blind eye to because of what he has done in the past when truth is the next coach could do as good and be out because we all no the pride of standards and graduation is inflated. Could it have ever been possible that the kid just couldn't hack it academically and he realized that and not that he defiantly blew off Penn State and Joe Pa. And let's not confuse Joe Pa with the Dean of students he doesn't set the bar he doesn't know how to get around the minimum requirements. That is the school he is a great man but just as anyone else tries to get the best player in through using the minimum standard.I will refute your graduation statement whole heartedly. Some people just won't graduate that's why I don't expect them too some aren't smart enough, some have family issues or disciplinary problems. Sadly many of footballs athletes already have these odds stacked against them and don't ahve th emeans nor the background and support system to push them through. Thats why I don't beleive tha tyou can hold judgment over an athlete until you know each and everyone of them nor hold those same expectations. No one denies a five star recruit becuase in three years he might go pro and not graduate and don't act like that's what JoePa has been doign he wants the best and the best doesn't always coincide with the brightest. It's unfortunate that you put those athletes on such a High pedestal because fact of the matter is athlete or non-athlete someoen isn't goign to make it and it's just nto sane to expect them to. There is a reason we use to use the word jocks becuase that is what they were known for yeah some are bright students but soemtimes stereotypes are jsut so in grained we will never be able to rise above it. Athletes are a different breed realize that even Penn or Harvard has those who are just unintereted in an education because they jsut want to win and compete.

Re: Say goodbye to Darrell Givens

Lastly it's a game it's a sport played with a ball and it's no secret that it doesn't take the brighest kid to win this game just the most athletic. There is only honor in the way you respect the game not in winning nor losing when you win you win when you lose you lose the only honor attached to that is that attached to the win loss column. Because honor doesn't matter here because this is a story about football an that's where it ends at about the game of football let's leave the honor and dignity and education to the wons who want it relish it and pass it along through good graces, and not try to ride the backs of an athlete scorned for a mind change for what is best for them.

Re: Say goodbye to Darrell Givens

Secondly the kid is an athlete he has pro aspirations. I hate the people who try to fit athletes into that role model or outstanding citizen group. They are people with a goal and their goal is not of the academic sense although it is offered to them. The kid wants to play and when it comes down to it he's not that fond of where he gets his education but does care if that education keeps him from his real pursuit of a dream playing football and being good on a major stage. Quite frankly I'm offended that florida and miami are so nice pointed out here as possible destinations while the author goes on a spiel on the greatness and integrity of Joe Pa's program. I would really like for you to read the APR rates and criminal rap sheets of these three programs the past 3 years Penn State,Florida and Miami then make your assumptions of higher morality and cracks of a program lacking a disciplinarian.

Re: Say goodbye to Darrell Givens

ahh shut up You guys weren't riding that high horse of morality and academic standard when you guys had numerous incidents and felony counts against the kids in yoru programn all I ask is that you realize you are like any other major school infractions happen not every kid is a peach and stop trying to be on a pedestal which quite frankly no one has to knock you off of because you shouldn't be there in the first place. I am a miami fan so what if our standards are lower when it comes down to it athletes like this make up the small minority of students in our university that's the truth around the nation most athletes in basketball and football don't graduate. Whether he got into your prestigious school or not that's not an automatic monniker of success and graduation.
