Small correction - Analytics doesn't include LinkedIn in engagement sources. (They don't provide a sufficient public API.)

And, of course, another key benefit of Analytics is that you can use it to discover your audience, reach, and content's performance, but you can also do the same for your competitors' content. :)

Melanie Baker
Community Manager, PostRank

Re: Announcing the new and improved PostRank Analytics

Hi Tim,

Have you been seeing this mis-posting recently, like this afternoon? To do that more efficiently, it helps to know who your audience is, where they are active online (especially with your content), and what content you publish that they find particularly interesting and valuable and with which they engage. That's what our analysis of your content shows.

Perhaps you posted two blog posts on Google Analytics a couple months apart, and you can see from the numbers that one post did really well with your audience. Lots of comments, tweets of the link, bookmarks, etc. Maybe even a bump in inquiring emails. But the other post... not so much. Why is that? Could be because one was a video, or a how to, or some other format that just worked for that particular topic with your particular audience at that particular time. In Analytics you start to see patterns and get a strong idea of what topics to cover or formats to use that tend to get more interest.

You can also see over time what content people keep coming back to, what's called "evergreen" content. Some blog posts get lots of engagement initially, but after a day or two it drops off and people never look at the posts again. Whereas some blog posts get attention when they're published, and are still getting referenced six months, a year, two years later. Clearly that content is valuable to people and telling them something they need to know. There's an interesting piece here: http://www.businessinsider.... that discusses that concept.

Having people regularly coming back to your site builds your credibility as an expert and business person, sets you as The Source for certain needs or questions they have, and if you run ads, etc., simply gets more eyeballs on your site.

Having solid stats on both your on-site and off-site metrics and reach makes you a more attractive prospect to brands and advertisers if that's an angle of business you happen to want to pursue, because they can tell exactly how well you're do and with what audience. This is one key behind the Connect service we're building, because brands and agencies have been looking for an efficient way to get data like that for some time.

In terms of proactive or outreach activities, PostRank analysis also shows you who is engaging with your content, how often, and where. So you can find out who your biggest champions are on Twitter or Digg or what have you. This makes it a lot easier to thank them, answer their questions, get their feedback, and encourage them to further help spread the word on what you do (ideally to bring more business your way). In a nut shell, it helps streamline building those necessary relationships.

That's not an exhaustive list of how PostRank's Analytics can be of use, but hopefully it makes things a bit clearer. And feel free to holler with other questions. (I'm at melanie@postrank.com and @postrank on Twitter as well.) Certainly, though, the lynchpin to it all, and the hard work part is up to you: creating great content. We can give you some insights into doing that, but at the end of the day, you're the one with fingers on the keyboard and building your audience and customer base. :)

Melanie Baker
Community Manager, PostRank

Re: Announcing the new and improved PostRank Analytics

Hi Mario,

Basically, we looked at the types of sites that were in the system, and the language people use when we talk to them about the service, and "blogs" is by far the most commonly used, and does a better job of distinguishing between that content and "Pages" content and the term "Sites" did.

By the same token, the majority of the RSS-enabled sites folks add are blogs, which was part of the logic behind giving non-RSS-enabled content its own section, since that can include sites, individual pages, PDFs, etc.

Re: Where did the Google Reader extension for Firefox go?

Like this one? :)

https://addons.opera.com/ad...

Re: Where did the Google Reader extension for Firefox go?

Very true. We track the activities around content (URLs) on these sources: http://apidocs.postrank.com...

Each activity (tweet, comment, bookmark, etc.) performed by any audience member on any of those sites is given a specific numerical value (weight) based on how much "engagement" (interest, effort, etc.) the activity demonstrates. Add up the values for all of those activities for each post, article, story, etc. and voila - PostRank score. It's all about what people are *doing*, thus avoiding the nebulous and contentious pitfalls of voting, opinion, etc.

And you're absolutely on the money re. higher engagement/influence among smaller, more focused, more passionate communities. There's anecdotal evidence that concrete audience actions -- open rates, conversions, etc. -- can be 3x higher among them than between "A-list" sites and their often larger, but much less tight-knit and engaged audiences.

Melanie Baker
Community Manager, PostRank

Re: And the most engaging TED talk is…

Clearly because the TED folks are big PostRank fans. :)

Re: Tools for Transparency: Analyzing Engagement with PostRank Part 2 - Sunlight Foundation

Hi Scott -- Yay, more overview goodness. :) Thanks again.

Re. the author/engagement points -- yeah, looks like something's up there.
