It turns out the D.C. National Guard has their own position of "commander", and he reports upward to the Defense Secretary, who makes his own decisions (presumably) on advice from the President, OR under explicit orders from the President. These men later defended their inaction by saying they got the advice, but not the explicit orders.

Others involved:
(1) Local authorities (like D.C. Mayor Bowser) can request National Guard help for their own police.

(2) The Capitol Police force reports upward through their Congressional board (and ultimately to Nancy Pelosi). The board can also request National Guard help.

(3) The President can take control of the National Guard of all states and D.C., but only by statute, or in emergencies where local forces are insufficient to quell violence (that is, not necessarily with a single telephone call).

In 2020, the D.C. mayor rejected additional troops to put down the BLM race riots (not wanting to hurt the rioters). Trump then determined that local forces were insufficient and went over her head, sending the D.C. National Guard to support the city, as well as working with nearby governors' troops. Trump was severely maligned as dictatorial for this, and the seeds were planted for a bill that finally passed the House last year that would take control of the D.C. National Guard AWAY from the Secretary of Defense and give it to the D.C. mayor.

In 2021, Trump, along with his Department of Defense, the Capitol Police board, and Mrs. Bowser, was nervous about Trump's CALLING IN THE NATIONAL GUARD to the Capitol protest where he had already been accused of trying to overthrow the election. It was worried that this would look to some people like Trump himself was trying to storm the Capitol (which you and your party have accused him of doing anyway, without the deployment), or anyway, that the U.S. was in a chaotic state. So Trump SUGGESTED to his Secretary of Defense to deploy up to 10,000 troops, but did not sign that order unilaterally, as there was no emergency yet to respond to. The Secretary heard the advice but then sat on it, determining that only 340 would be needed. This was communicated to the D.C. Mayor, who agreed to request this many -- but she (still not wanting to hurt protestors, apparently) instructed them not to confront people or carry weapons, and only help direct traffic and respond in case of emergencies.

The Capitol Police were the first to be aware of their insufficient manpower (with 1,400 officers facing several thousand protestors). As the protest unfolded and a minority of people got rowdy and entered the Capitol, they repeatedly requested help from their own board, but this was denied, while being bounced back and forth with the DoD, for the same reason of looking bad. These people seem to have been at the actual decision chokepoint. Bowser eventually asked for more National Guard troops, but it took three hours to happen. Meanwhile, D.C. police were sent in (several thousand of which were on duty), and Trump requested the protestors to disperse.

Perhaps 90% of the protestors never went to the Capitol after the rally. Of those who did go, up to 15% also entered the Capitol building, some by force, others without force as policemen did not decide to confront them. Of those roughly 1,200 people, one protestor was shot dead by the Capitol Police. In the total group, three others suffered heart attacks. A policeman had a stroke and later died. Many people including peace officers had been dinged up by scuffling; some property had been damaged. Selfies had been taken. The electoral voting was concluded by Congress despite an interruption when a group of demonstrators made it to the voting chamber.

A few arrests were made on the day, but eventually, the majority of those who entered the Capitol were arrested. The FBI found no evidence of official-level coordination for the trespassing, only actions of individuals and a few small civic groups. Hundreds have been imprisoned, many of whom have already been released. The longest sentence given was 22 years; the shortest (received by many) was two weeks and a several-hundred-dollar fine for the crime of "demonstrating in the Capitol".

And Democrat politicians were left to act traumatized on camera, rush through a second impeachment of Trump, and absurdly paint the whole thing as an "insurrection" on par with a foreign military attack.

You are free to believe Trump hates democracy, as most Americans are also free to believe that Harris hates capitalism, borders, diplomacy, and interviews, and is incapable of being president. But can you begin to understand how many layers of command were involved, and how your idea that Trump by himself was in charge of security is completely wrong? You're right that it's also a little problematic to blame it all on Pelosi, EVEN IF she took some responsibility for it later, because the mostly-peaceful protest got out of control before either Trump or Pelosi could have reasonably intervened, while those usually in charge of both preparation and rapid response were further down the chain.

Your pretending only works for fellow Democrats, not real human beings. We all know Trump didn't "tell them to" bring weapons, attack police officers, or chant unusual things. And everybody also knows that protests that veer toward riotousness can get risky. How nice if whoever in D.C. (and in Trump's own administration) didn't take Trump seriously would have sent peacekeepers as he suggested, instead of waiting for mandatory mobilization from Trump alone. But Democrats are not known for their desire to interfere with weaponizable chaos.

Citizens may of course protest, even against groups protected by taboos and superstitions. Still, I think it's fine to be hesitant to use a Constitutional legal apparatus to uphold the Constitutional rights of those to whom the Constitution does not clearly apply. Speech tourism is fine, but speech tourists have a tough case to make that their speech may include disruption. No country with a future is scandalized by deportation while any justification for it exists.

"Moderate" Republican is your first tip-off that you had a coincidental rather than ideological affiliation. In other words, you never had Republican credentials, so your susceptibility to public bribes amounts to no serious critique. You don't find many conservative expatriates because conservatives are less likely to abandon their homelands. ...Which, in my view, is a pity, since our cultural ambassadors abroad tend to be limited to radical college leftists, shaming all America while demoralizing the friendly powers who get stuck with them, and on the other hand, domestic conservatives become insular, unexposed to better ideas, and vulnerable to the foreign fear-mongering politicians on all sides love to employ to distract from their own failures. Travel is definitely therapeutic.

Second, wow, you went to what was still (according to current leftism) a white-supremacist, ethnic majoritarian Germany decades ago, the grandchildren of Nazis, and benefitted from the scale efficiencies of institutional racism. It wasn't the "social democracy" that worked, it was the cultural cohesion underpinning the social democracy. Now that Germany and the rest of Europe have surrendered their racial birthright to try to repeat the failed American melting-pot experiment, we can expect to see the social welfare dams crack. Lucky for you, if you're still insulated from Germany's growing social chaos. Your children won't be.

Third, many Republicans would be happy to dismantle the stranglehold of Big Health on their health care, particularly after the COVID-19 debacle revealed their tyrannical leftist proclivities.

Fourth, although Clinton was a rapist and corrupt, people could still be Clinton-era Democrats without being completely insane. While you got old, the world changed, and you seem to have missed it. If you blind yourself with Democrat programming -- the kind expatriates are often restricted to by the bias of foreign-source media that offers very little oppositional balance, unlike in the U.S. -- of course you will fail to notice how extremized and psychologically imbalanced your own side has become. The fact that you have reached this website is a mark in your favour, showing some desire to peek outside the box.

Fifth, why are you still voting in the U.S., as a lifelong expatriate? Does the empty shell of humanity that is Joe Biden really make you that excited? Are you really still paying taxes every year to a U.S. government that does absolutely nothing for you? Or are you under the taxable threshold? One would at some point expect a revocation of citizenship, if it were still costing you anything.

"Military service" without losing friends in combat just means drinking the propaganda about American interests including the entire world. The tiny percentage of people willing to deploy to fight Russia/China over their own backyards are already dying in Ukraine as we speak. We don't want to fall back into that Bush/Romney mentality. If DeSantis is able to walk casually across a border with Kim Jong-un, maybe he has hope.

There have been far worse choices than DeSantis, but I won't vote for another neo-Conservative warmonger, and he gives me some slight worries on that front with the way he, like others before him, calls foreign powers our "enemies" simply for daring to compete and daring to disobey. After Trump showed a better way, the "waste American blood and treasure in meaningless, anti-democratic interventions while the country burns" ship has hopefully sailed forever from the harbours of Republican presidential campaigns.

So we're effectively living under the stereotypical terror of a Chinese-style government. This whole line of thinking, that the Church wisely yielded, a la polygamy, in an unwinnable fight, is nonsense. Rather than facing insurmountable legal odds in resisting it, the Church's new embrace of homosexual marriage conversely became a significant factor (so far as our local Congressional delegations went) in further legitimizing and establishing said marriage -- and inexplicably in a climate where we are potentially the closest we have been, under Trump's judges, to follow Roe v. Wade and reverse the bad law. No poker player would have folded with this hand. Furthermore, what do we now say about every other more plausible moral "fait accompli", such as free access to pornography? The same argument would sabotage the Church on every issue they still dare to make a peep at (no longer including the kowtows on illegal migration, CRT, or vaccine mandates). Justifying this requires blind faith indeed.
