"

Yet you refuse to point them out. Interesting.

"Indeed the core truth of Malthus's argument does live ultimately... "

Malthus general ignores economics. People often take advantage of new technologies to further themselves.

Malthus's essential point was that population growth was exponential, while agricultural growth is linear. We have found that this is certainly not the case in the 20th century, and even more so in the 21st century.

This man's work is all the proof you need:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

"Oh and yes Africa should try the one-two child policy - so they can live within there means without destroying ecosystems. "

I don't even want to know who is supposed to enforce that.

Re: On religion

Yes, but what do you think of the horrendous slaughters of native people by the Jews? I am of course referring to the Old Testament genocides and annihilations done in the name of God. The Jews in this regard don't seem much different from many other religions of that time.

The Assyrians are regarded as "cruel," but the Jews seem to escape this description, even though they tended to destroy EVERYTHING in their path (with the exception of virgin women, spared presumably for raping).

"The Israelites were the first proto-secular, even humanist, society living under a nominal God."

Yes, but even a cursory examination of the Bible reveals Yahweh as a malicious, cruel, jealous, contradictory tyrant, much like many of the other gods of antiquity.

Re: Ghana, stuck with the wind

"Alas if the rest of the world wants to live as 'wasteful people in the US' - the world will eventually be barren and devoid of biodiversity."

I don't know about you, but I sure want to live like I do. Being able to go to just about any faucet or spout and drink from it is truly amazing. It blows me away that the water I give to my pets is higher quality than what the rest of the world gets. In Europe, you'd be hard pressed to find a faucet that you can drink from, especially in Eastern and Central Europe.

Unless, you like dysentery. Ever had mistreated water? This isn't about giving everybody a MacDonald's around the corner. This is about potable water.

Besides, the US is at a technological/economic position (well, maybe), where we can actually preserve wildlife. Ever notice how third world countries really don't give a shit about endangered animals? That's because the people are too busy starving. I think keeping yourself alive is a little higher on the priority scale than saving the African Retard Lizard.

Remember, America brought back the Bison, but only because we were in a good place to do so. Not only that, but many species have actually boomed in the US. Every night, I see deer wandering about my city. I see and hear coyotes all the time.

"In the future the currency must be pegged to the physical reality of limited resources "

Isn't that what currency originally was?

"may only be harvested after a certain period or cycle - "

...which is what harvesting and crop rotation is about.

Or do you mean governing who can plant what and at which time?

How do you spell that? S-O-C-I-A-L-I-S-M, right?

"or there must be a massive global population decline. "

Zombie Thomas Malthus still lives! Seriously, the Malthus argument is getting old. You do realize that the more people there are, the more people can work and take advantage of technology?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

"My point is proven by the steadily increasing cost of drinkable water. A freshwater spring in the future may be what an oil well was to a farmer in texas a decade ago."

So I'll be able to run my car with water? :P

Sure that isn't inflation? Sure that isn't increased cost because of better methods for purification? Within my very short lifetime, I've seen water treatment standards improve dramatically.

Re: On religion

Just curious, but when do you think that Judaism started to influence thought towards atheism?

Re: Atheist Ireland

Generally, I think all republics that have been around for enough time eventually confront a conflict between freedom and religion. It allows them to explore the power relationship between Dominator and Dominated, furthering an understanding of Foucault's thesis of "biopolitics" in action.

Yet it prevents women from actually being exploited because they're secure from the leering eyes of strangers, which truly degrades them by making them objects.

I believe we should use this as a model in schools today, which will allow students to really get a hands-on approach to sexual politics.

Re: Reaching for the moon no more

Rocket Fuel + Muslims = Bad Idea

Re: All clear on the middle-eastern front

Right on!

Whenever people declare the US to be imperialist, I simply point out all the places we HAVEN'T taken over permanently. We've held Cuba, the Philippines, Korea, Mexico, Germany, Japan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Italy, Panama, yet we can claim NONE of these as territories or States.

We protect numerous other countries, yet can only claim them as "allies."

If Iraq was for oil, we sure did a crap job of ensuring our dominance there. We should have called it New Arizona and introduced it as our 51st State.

Re: All clear on the middle-eastern front

It would be nice to say to ANY county: Keep on your side of the fence!

But that's just naiveté. Israel is surrounded by countless wolves who abuse their geographic positions to inflict damage on her. The Golan Heights, anyone? Before Israel took it, it was the BEST location to put a mortar and toss some shells at Jews.

Israel's neighbors have a LONG history of not respecting borders. The British mandate for Palestine in 1947, where the Arabs held IMMENSE territory in the region wasn't enough. They quickly invaded the Jewish sections of Palestine, hoping to exterminate the Jews once and for all. Even since having their asses handed to them during that fight, the Arabs have bitched and moaned about Israeli incursions into their "homeland."

I think the Jews have actually been MORE respectful than their neighbors when it comes to borders. They gave back Sinai, for example.

Besides, you're still thinking of Muslims as being human and reasonable. They're not. Countless Arab/Muslim leaders have called to drive Israel into the sea. No, not just "take back the Palestinian homeland." Drive Israel into the sea. All the proof you need that the Palestinians just want to see Jews killed are the 1994 Oslo Accords. The Palestinians could have taken 90% of the territory they wanted. They didn't. They just want to see Israel destroyed.

Re: A report from Afghanistan

There is an old Islamic saying:

"Women are for reproduction, boys for pleasure, goats for sheer ecstasy"

Re: Thou shalt kill

...So why isn't he dead or in jail?

Oh, right, because the British have no balls.

Re: Nothing succeeds like failure

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

I thought this was appropriate.

Re: A fine fatwa and its sad fatuity

Sura XLVII: Muhammed

Whose believe not, and prevent others from the way of God - their works will He cause to miscarry:

But whoso believe, and do thing that are right, and believe in what hath been sent down to Muhammad - for it is the truth from their Lord - their sins will He cancel, and dispose their hearts aright.

This - because the infidels followed vanity, while those who believe, followed the truth from their Lord.
