Agree on Gmail tabs—they deliver no value to me. I never used priority inbox either.

Re: fragmentation—this may be a potshot but if Android is any indication Google doesn't worry too much about fragmentation. I also think this is a temporary clouding of options. Desktop Gmail will inevitably start looking more like Android Gmail or Inbox. (Unrelated: how long will Coca-Cola keep making Coke, Coke Zero, and Diet Coke?)

Question: are there other areas where you'd be more willing to let the computer drive? What if you took a photo and Facebook shared it with people it thought would appreciate it most? What if you couldn't build playlists in Rdio and it just deduced what kind of music you wanted to listen to? What if Amazon pre-filled your cart with suggested purchases?

Startup Institute is in Berlin, but that may not be of much use to you in Frankfurt. ProductTank does meetups globally for product people, and though I don't see Frankfurt listed as a city, maybe you could help them start it? If you want to be in product you have to take something from an idea to reality at some point.

I have a lot of the same pains with existing budget software. I use Mint to get a view household finances but it's not really a budget tool—it's a bookkeeping tool that's good for going back and categorizing/tagging transactions, not looking forward. The fact that i can't set a budget for June until it's actually June is ridiculous.

My top pain point right now is that I don't feel like I have visibility into how much money is leftover (typically we underspend) at the end of each month to reallocate to savings goals or spend on discretionary purchases. As you well know, I don't buy anything unless I have a plan ahead of time to pay for it. So I feel like we're working harder than we need to saving for home projects or trips, and ending up with higher-than-necessary checking balances.

Haha absolutely not. I like to think it comes down to showmanship. If Steve Jobs had invented ED-209, you can be sure that (1) there'd be live ammo, and (2) there would be a backup ED-209 behind the curtain just in case the first one malfunctions and kills a guy in the middle of the presentation.

The promise of other non-Facebook content is definitely the most compelling aspect of Paper to me, but the feature is still too young. I may check it out again down the road if I start hearing that the content curation has improved, but for now, I've already got Twitter, Prismatic, Quibb, Quartz, etc. for finding good reads online.

I'm not anchored to Facebook, so they have to be substantially better than those services to change my reading routine, not just incrementally better or on par.

Thanks very much for the feedback. Using a mainstream product in the example makes lots of sense, I'll update this soon to incorporate that.

Regarding perception of product—I agree it's important. How do you reconcile between the difference of desired/perceived impact?

I have made example decks with real products on the market to test this out, but haven't posted them. I would love to have a gallery of user submitted work though. Very interested to see how others adapt this framework to meet their needs.

THANK YOU!! Though I didn't read it, what I know about The Dark Fields suggests that it deals with the implications of the drug very differently, and much more seriously. What completely ruins Limitless is that it just sweeps all that consequence under the rug with a shitty, lazy ending.

But let's be fair, Limitless is not a "standard" run away from goons movie. When else have you seen a goon take an ice skate (while attached to a young girl) to the face?

Excellent read that only does a good job defining product management, but also discusses the growing importance of the role in young organizations. I have read the Norton and Elman articles before and they are on my list of must-reads for product managers.
