After blogging about it I got a response, and refund from a friendly Vodafone representative. I never got a clear answer as to whether it was the network or iPhone that was responsible for the issue though.

http://adamdoran.com/?p=11

Re: Private: Vodafone iPhone goes on data roaming rampage

You're welcome, glad to help. Hopefully they will fix it one day. Although I'm not likely to be going back myself I'm sure many more will find themselves in the same situation.

Re: iPhone OS 4: Welcome to fragmentation-land Apple [Updated]

As soon as I saw that slide in Apple’s presentation with the word ‘Fall’ adjacent to the iPad that alteration you made was inevitable…

Whilst a more major instance, this isn’t the first time there’s been fragmentation on the iPhone OS platform; the launch of iPhone 3GS introduced new 3D acceleration capabilities to applications. I believe it was stated that this means some applications are 3GS/Touch3G only. Of course the OS 4 functional deviations are going to greatly exacerbate this.

Re: Private: Vodafone iPhone goes on data roaming rampage

Firmware bug would make sense. Possibly the carrier settings are lacking too, hopefully we'll find out some day. I'm going home tomorrow and am not likely to be coming back to Guernsey in the near future, I'll always be paranoid about this when roaming in the future though.

That's a really good question (RE: the background data usage). I had been under the impression that disabling push (and fetch) email + push notifications would have caused all non-requested traffic to cease... Evidently the iPhone likes to talk! Of course my opening the Mail app to read (what I believed to be only previously downloaded) emails triggered it to contact the server.

To put this into perspective, the roaming charges are pretty good now, up to 25MB will only cost you a fixed £4.99 a day. And in any event if Vodafone had refused to reverse the charges I could have always expense'd them to my employer...

Re: VoIP on the Nokia N900

Cool video, I used to have my N95 connect to my work and home Asterisk PBXs. The lack of SIP is the biggest downside to my new iPhone.

I'm curious as to what kind of IP Phone that was on your desk; I have a Cisco 7970 running SIP firmware myself.

Re: Exclusive: The search for the N…

I'll take some stickers if you have any left please!

Re: Download the Nokia Star Trek ‘futurize’ ringtone here

Thanks for that, I was in need of a new ringtone!

Re: Calling 0800 numbers for free from mobiles

I usually make 0800 calls from my mobile using my SIP provider (sipgate.co.uk) whenever possible. Lately I configured my Asterisk PBX to offer this kind of functionality. Basically by dialling an 01 number and providing an access code I get a dial tone that gives the ability to place calls across several private trunks to various networks plus least cost routing for international calls. Without the infrastructure something like 0800Buster would be very useful.

Anyone know for certain whether the Nokia N97 will have the same SIP functionality as the N95 does? I'm aware of the Skype client but have a fondness for SIP personally.

Re: T-Mobile's Content Block System: Broken

I used to have an annoying problem that when connecting via my laptop using the vpn.t-mobile.uk APN, content filtering would stop me doing pretty much anything. Using the general APN it was fine and observed my content filtering preferences (none please). Really tempted to take a contract with Vodafone as soon as the N97 is here and bid farewell to T-Mobile.
