I really think the person who doesn't understand Dynamo is you... it seems you've gotten everything down pat from the brochures, but I ask again, have you actually used Dynamo on a big project? With, let's say a team of 8 or 9 ATG Consultants and another set of 10 programmers on a 8+ month project including all parts of the Dynamo infrastructure?

Seriously, have you? If not, you don't know the pain. You can lap up ATG Marketing and find tricks from Anonymous assholes on The ServerSide, but the fact remains it's a horrible platform that's quickly dying and for good reason. The stuff we were doing on this job could have been done in 1/4 of the time and effort using any other architecture out there. You want to support and develop on this non-standard architecture, go for it... it's your career, but take my advice and run.

And I can "admit" to lots of things about Dynamo that don't suck. You missed the fact that the new specs from Sun for Tag Libraries are going to be more similar to droplets, making development of them easier. However, that doesn't mean in general Dynamo isn't a big, bloated, pain in the ass to work with.

By the way, I've worked with the famed Julian at my last job. He was one of those 10 ATG consultants. He's not a bad guy, but I don't want to work with him again either.

Just to reiterate: Dynamo suuuuuucks. Do you work for ATG or something? The only people I've seen that defend this tech are usually employees...

-Russ

Re: Dynamo sucks, or how I learned to stop worrying and love EJB

LOL....I just checked your resume. No, I decided I didn't want to work for Google first, then decided I didn't want to go through the interview process because it would be a waste of an afternoon. In fact, most of this would be possible to do today if someone put the pieces together. The question is simply will businesses put their inventory up online. I know that Nokia is already planning on having RFID readers on their phones... so part of this is already in the works.

Personally, I don't think mobile compa rision shopping is going to be nearly as big of a deal as simple mCommerce: While waiting for your oil change, you use your mobile to search through Amazon's DVDs and buy your wife her favorite TV Show Box set for her birthday. Or while waiting in the doctor's office, you finish off your Christmas shopping, etc.

The key thought to what you've written though, is the fact that data-enabled mobiles are a real link from the virtual world to the real world and search may be the glue which holds it together. Up until now, you've been trapped at your desk, and forced to print stuff out before going off and interacting with the world. Now you can be out and about and as you need something, will be able to do a quick search and find the information that you need, when and where you need it.

I had a coworker once who said that he uses the browser on his phone for one thing, and one thing only: settling bar bets with quick Google searches. You can be ethusiastically realistic, no? I know you guys love this stuff as much as the rest of us, but you don't show it nearly enough!

I mean, hey, I'm as sick as the next guy of reading the daily "Consumers will love/hate/love/hate mobile video" news stories... But tell me the truth, isn't it *fucking cool* to see live channels streaming to your mobile? 18 months ago taking a VGA picture was the coolest thing and just before that just having color screens was considered cutting edge. This stuff is AWESOME! Don't get caught up in the hype... Analyze what you personally see and hear and feel.
