I used to feel the same way about Hailo—here in Toronto they've a proper dispatching license. I always knew that, like you say, Uber less of a commission from drivers' fares; then I found out that (again, in Toronto, at least), UBER gives their drivers a free iPhone 4s with unlimited data—whereas Hailo drivers have to make do with their own devices and connections. So I switched to UBER.

But I definitely agree, either service trumps hailing some random cab on the street!

I really appreciate this post, but I do think you're mistaken when it comes to Mr. Nowak.

While I don't agree with his views on MVNOs in Canada either, if you read through more of his blog — particularly the stuff about the Verizon debacle this past summer — you'll hopefully see that he's anything but beholden to The Big Three.

I'm reminded of what former Mobilicity CEO Dave Dobbin said in 2011, something to the effect of: "The inescapable future for carriers is to be dumb pipes for data."

Wouldn't it be better to get your media from the source, rather than paying your carrier for it, and then paying again for the data?

One thing I'm not quite clear on from your piece above is if you've actually read The Net Delusion; I'm making my way through it now, and while it's perhaps a bit repetitive on the same arguments I think Morozov makes some really good points early on, particularly about the overstated importance of Twitter in the Arab Spring.
