Monroe County specifically. For being one of the more liberal centers of the state (Rochester), the county itself is still red. The process for me went like this:

Drive to the county clerks office to pick up the county-resident application (couldn't print it up at the time and city residents had a different process)
Fill out the packet and drop it off back at the county clerks office once you have your required endorsements and mental health portion filled out (don't sign anything until you're in the office)
Designate what you want your permit for (hopefully not getting any restrictions)
Pay $125 or so and get a little slip of paper as proof that you pre-paid for fingerprints
Walk over to the sheriff's department, show them the slip of paper and go through the fingerprinting process
Wait 10 months (plenty of time to save up for a gun)
You now have a *paper* permit that can't be laminated, because your serials and calibers have to be printed on it (this has since been changed, but you need 1 card as a permit and 1 card with your registrations on it)

Buying a pistol
Go to the shop, buy the gun. Rather, you're buying the right to take possession of the gun.
Take your coupon to the county clerks office, stand in line for an hour, pay $3 to have them print your serial and caliber on your permit
Drive back to the shop with your approval and then go through the background check process
Finally take delivery of your gun.

Oh and Monroe County has no requirement for gun safety, laws, or knowledge. There's no training requirement at all.

Re: [VIDEO] Female Thug Opens Fire On People At Detroit Gas Station

Yes, I do most humbly apologize and bow to your ever-expanding wealth of knowledge on this matter. Small government ideals aren't going to work here because all across the US, each metropolitan/suburban market is stuck with one choice for an ISP.. perhaps two if they don't share the same medium (cable, dsl, etc). Markets like mine (Rochester NY) have agreements in place where outside competition doesn't step a foot inside and so these ISPs are monopolies/duopolies.

The author can claim to be a "dork" as much as he wants, but as an actual network engineer/administrator, I know how this stuff actually works. Because there's no competition (either due to buyouts or litigation), there's no incentive to innovate. We're essentially using the same cables that were in use for home internet connections almost 20 years ago. Very few people have fiber to their homes, even though the relative cost of installation has come waaay down. Have a house 20 miles east of me and Verizon will plunk down a FiOS line no problem.. but here, Frontier wouldn't dream of it.

You can scream 'small government, small government' all you want, but the system is already fundamentally broken due to inaction and delaying intervention now will only make the matter worse down the road. People like Ted Cruz need to campaign on a tech-friendly platform where issues like this are addressed.. not just criticized. The previous generation freaked out with Bell because telephones were once a thing.. my generation is concerned out our communications service as well.

Also.. when people say stuff like "Net Neutrality is simple really: If Obola is for it, I am against it.", you're giving the left ample reason to call us ignorant morons.

Re: 7 Reasons Net Neutrality Is A Dumb Idea

Unfortunately, this whole issue isn't that simple. Most ISP markets have well-established monopolies or duopolies and any competition is sued, restricted, or purchased by the bigger ISPs. The federal and state govts have by-and-large ignored, sometimes helped, these companies rise to extreme power and we're past the point where simple free market ideals are easily going to correct things. Its easy to say that competition will win out and if you don't like the restrictions your ISP is placing on you or the proposed "fast lanes", then switch.. but the competition simply isn't there. This is essentially Bell several times over but in this case, they don't interfere with each others markets.

Reclassifying an Internet SERVICE Provider as a telecom SERVICE and not a product goes a long way at breaking up content/source/destination discrimination. My fear is that by not passing bipartisan net neutrality legislation, the door will be open first for consumers to be abused at an unprecedented level, and then immediately after by the government trying to rein in an even bigger problem.

I love Ted Cruz, but I think he got this one wrong. Instead of making headlines as the antichrist on every tech site known to man today, how about taking the offensive and setting up a tech-friendly/small-gov platform that my generation will flock to.

http://theoatmeal.com/blog/...

Re: Verizon's Samsung Galaxy S5 Is Getting An Update With Minor Changes And Flips The Switch On Advanced Calling 1.0 [Update: LG G2 Too]

Battery life is horrible now.. I just finished watching the CBS special, 9/11, 10 years later.. Statements made by the EPA and Giuliani regarding the air being safe are just appalling and now cancer isn't a condition covered under plans the gov't has put in place. IMO, all the first responders and crews that worked that day and in the months following with cleanup, should receive the same benefits US military should-- access to VA hospitals and health coverage, etc. Even 10 years later, firemen are dealing with PTSD, survivor syndrome, high divorce rates, unemployment because of the psychological trauma experienced.

9/11 was a horrible day.. The least we can do is support those who fought the devastation first-hand

Re: Guilds and Alliance Wishlist for Guild Wars 2

I love the idea for a guild HOM and games.. I don't see her as being a character who falls on a tragedy and becomes a villain of sorts (like Loki, Thor's brother). I have a feeling that her actions will be questioned by other characters because of her failure to yield to norms that other races have adopted-- even if her own race falls in line.

Its interesting the distinction that is made with Caithe seeking out the shadowy parts.. Building on the revelation that Sylvari share a common knowledge, wouldn't the knowledge of those shadows be present in the minds of the more naive? (for lack of better word) Do they then just choose to repress those memories?
