In her first season with Bradbury's record the fans would have been screaming for her to be fired. Now after losing 4 consecutive winnable games, Bradbury is still getting the love. Amazing.

Re: Lobo women place last in Thanksgiving Tournament

Sad to watch. They are a hard-working bunch and you see the flashes of athleticism and talent, just not consistently from the team working together. Does anybody have the year that they last lost both games in the tournament? I have had season tickets since 1997-98, and I'm sure I have not seen that happen in any of the 19 years I've been going to games.

Their FORMER coach is working at El Dorado High School. She was a class act and some of us fans miss her very much. But Coach Bradbury has a system that has worked for him in the past. He will insist that the players adjust to it rather than he adjust his system to them. As testimony to his commitment to the fast game rather than the power game, he loses two tall post players next season but has 5 smaller guards coming in. This may be hard to watch going forward.

Re: Don’t wear a campaign shirt to the polls in New Mexico

I'd be so happy if President Obama were running for a third term. Only the duped Facebook users can agree or disagree. To me it makes sense to prosecute anybody who is a hacker, and hackers deserve jail time. I say "Any Gun" has no place on our streets. But I'll tone down my argument a notch and say that "Any Gun" has no place in a drinking establishment (but I could make a longer list of places in which guns and poor judgment have an inevitably bad ending). Or maybe overpasses with high fences and guns without bullets increase the odds of one or two more people getting home safely at the end of the day.

At the end of the day, I trust HRC's thinking and I do not trust DT's thinking and, regardless, I stay home as much as possible. Outside my home is a very unsafe world.

Re: Clinton, Trump take opposite tacks as shooting shakes race

That doesn't sound clueless to me. First, I restate that I think that it is very unfortunate that anybody can own a gun, because anybody can get upset about something, and shouting is then so much less satisfying that shooting.

Moving on ...

Sunday the response to a mass shooting was, "A Muslim did it." Is anybody concerned that 49 gays died because, once again, somebody who hates gays decided that as many as possible should die and a knife or six shooter just wasn't going to mow down as many people as an automatic weapon? Their deaths would have been trivialized if Donald Trump were not fanning the flames of Islamophobia among his supporters.

I have a set of concerns: 1) straight people going into a gay safe haven, 2) guns going into a bar, and 3) the anti-gay repercussions that are inspiring legislation that sends the message that gays have not ceased being fair game for discrimination, therefore the insidious suggestion that gay lives don't matter. To say all of a sudden that the Muslim intolerance of gays is a terrible thing is to ignore the historic American intolerance of gays, which is spoken with as much religious zeal by Baptists as is felt by people who have reverence for Muhammad.

I don't like guns, and I don't like the rationalization for Saturday night's violence as "Muslim" behavior when we all know that Americans are no better when they are outside a Planned Parenthood Clinic, inside a Black prayer meeting, or anywhere near a couple of men who are dancing or holding hands. Omar Mateen's religion doesn't make the crimes of other gay bashers excusable. I repeat, his religion is irrelevant. Why characterize this murderer as an "extremist" and a WASP murderer as "just crazy." Mateen's just another bigot in a country that is full of bigots. If we want to pass judgment on somebody for his or her intolerance, we need look no further than a mirror.

Re: Clinton, Trump take opposite tacks as shooting shakes race

Ah. Hate crimes against the LGBT community are not unique to Muslims. The fact that Omar Mateen's parents were born in Afghanistan is irrelevant. More relevant to me is that guns are available to everyone with a beef of some kind.

Re: Army’s gay civilian leader calls his promotion ‘remarkable’

How wonderful it will be when sexuality ceases to be part of any news story. I wasn't saying that UNM SHOULD stop hosting the lucrative PBR. I just miss watching basketball at the Sweet Sixteen and Elite 8 level. I know that you must not be ignorant like me, so I'm sure you know that the most famous NCAA Championship game ever (Houston and NC State) took place in The Pit on April 4, 1983. I'm sure you also know that two high points in UNM Women's basketball were witnessed by sellout crowds in The Pit, the WNIT Championship game that UNM lost to Ohio State by one point in 2001 and the team's advance to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in the Pit in 2003.

Albuquerque is a basketball town and The Pit was built for basketball. But that's my heart talking, not my brain.

Gathering of Nations at the University Arena in the spring is another tradition that will be missed by many. Taking place at the end of April or the beginning of May, it doesn't stomp all over Division 1 basketball tournaments like a PBR Bull. I don't know about expenses or revenue for that extremely large and prestigious event, but I'm sure that the event will thrive wherever it goes.

I thank Jarrod Thomas for the explanation of the finances and logistics for the PBR and the advantage for UNM. I felt less ignorant after reading your post, Jarrod.

Re: UNM will no longer host Gathering of Nations

I'd rather UNM quit hosting Professional Bull Riding during March Madness.

Re: Police: No charges for man who dumped woman’s body in dumpster

I hope the family has a civil case. But let's not exaggerate the record of Yvonne Sanchez as too overly dismal. Her first year, most of the time with only 7 players, she had an 11-20 record but took the team to the championship game of the tournament. Three of the next four years were winning seasons, but they were not enough to dig out of the hole that the team started with in her first year: 17-14, 11-19, 21-13 and 17-15.

The team had had 5 consecutive years without a 20-win season (2 of those years under Coach Flanagan) before last year's 21-13 season when Coach Sanchez was voted Coach of the Year in the MWC and took the team to the championship game of the tournament after a regular season standing of 2nd place.

Year 1 was 11-20, but years 2-5 amassed a record of 66-61. OK, she wasn't Pat Summit. But her 5-year record of 77-81 had some exciting times, including this year's decisive road win in Minneapolis and last year's near defeat of Stanford.

The Don Flanagan era rode a different wave in NCAA women's basketball that has been dissipating over the last 10 years. The WNBA likewise has seen lower attendance except in cities where the likes of Lisa Leslie and Brittney Griner have played. I hope that Bradbury will ride a new wave of Lobo Women's Basketball support, but I will be very surprised if he can do any better than Coach Sanchez and her gutty teams did during 2011-2016. A good start would be for the town and the UNM students and especially the athletic department to get behind the team.

Re: UNM hires new women’s basketball coach

The Lobo Women already had that. The mentally ill, who are as incapable of going to a job every day, need this kind of help. And,.of course, the homeless of both descriptions, need this kind of help. Medication management is tricky if your brain is convinced you haven't (or have) taken your Coumaden. As the article points out, visits by people in a team of professionals who can explain "the system" to frequent 911 callers save the City money. It would be wonderful if advisors were at all senior centers to answer questions from anybody who wanted to know some of the things that are explained by visitors from a special task force.

My own experience with "the system" is 1) Senior Affairs does not go out of its way to invite use of certain of its services, and 2) does anybody know how to make a NON-emergency call to the police?

Re: Low gas prices good for consumers, not for state budget

So why be so dependent on oil for revenue?
