I really enjoyed all the ideas you presented in this post. I find the <friend-follow> issues particular interresting because so many people seem to just add 2000 users immediately, in order to get a high number of <followers> and because so many people do automatic acceptance they do get at least a proportion of those numbers back..

I check every person who adds me, and if they are typical 'number cruncher' then I do not add them. For me someone who is more interested in numbers is just not the connection I want to make.

Friends not followers is my mantra.

To anyone reading this post, it would be great if you could share your experiences or if you have any ideas for improvement. I really want to develop this, and having taken the first step it seems a little easier.

Thanks for your comment and the mention of the push notification. I hadn't realised this issue and just thought they had not implemented it. That really is such an important point and one that I hope is being addressed.

Thanks for the comments, I do agree there can be to much noise, and where I used to try to catch every message, now I find I focus my time more.

I to downloaded it as soon as it was put on the store. The applications for the iPhone are getting much more useful and these are the types of applications I want to see more of (less fart applications please). I read that they are negotiating an application to be able to record video on the iPhone which will bring us all one step closer.

Thanks for your comment Mike. I agree about the entry points, but also there has been some bad press about SL and I'm not sure I would want to be the one to introduce my students to it. Can't decide if education is ready for this or not. Curious to see the result of this event,

A lot of valid points you've mentioned. The style of your writing describing the honeymoon period is really fitting. It does take some time to find your groove on Twitter and to understand the friend / follow situation.

The point that sticks out the most is your mention of the 'joker cards'. Really great point that people on Twitter need to be aware of. Posting out your blog link to a really great article, or every few articles has much more impact then posting the link every time.

This is worrying, and hopefully the registered names or authorities will begin to take notice. As you mention it is someone using their name, and logo, and yet no affiliation with them. Bad representation of the company. They have to start to take this stuff more seriously.

Or - maybe the reverse will happen, that we must assume people are not who they say they are, and some sort of moderation will happen where you can prove it... Why can't Pepsi open an account called Coke, and post insults or bad rumours about the company? How will this be dealt with.

Funny, this was such a big deal for me to do at the time, but now I'm wondering why. Hopefully I will integrate more video into this blog as time goes on. I would love to encourage people to post video comments as well, so I guess I'll have to post some myself!

Had to post a comment! Really great to read this guest post. I have been following Mikes blog and the interesting thing about him is the ability to change and adapt. He isn't set in stone, and he moves the topics, formats.... according to advice or what he is learning.

This isn't meant to be 'patronising' what I'm saying is it takes a very determined and intelligent person to change and adapt to a new field. Many people don't like change and that could be their downfall. He's learning and above all else he's SHARING what he's learnt.

Keep up the great and inspiring work Mike!

Your last paragraph is a particularly interesting idea. Intelligent Internet is an idea that I keep hoping will happen, that the projects, ideas and content will begin to 'mature' and find places where it all becomes useful.

I spend too much time trying to keep on top of all the things that will apparently enhance my user experience, (my bookmarks, my documents, my photos.... endless lists) only to find they stop supporting it, it fails, or new ways are introduced (my data ends up being everywhere).

It gets to a point where I am now committing to 2 main communication tools with the Internet and I'll see where they get me. Maybe we need to make the Internet Intelligent rather then waiting for it to happen.

Hey nice looking blog you got here. I've been on the Twitter 'scene' for a few months and was just like you, heard about it, but didn't join till much later. Hopefully you'll find that after an initial settling in period you start to focus who you follow and talk with to make valued connections. It really is worth having a list of quality people and I find that it will alter you experience of Twitter.

Hope you manage to break away for coffee & food thought!
