An unfavorable verdict for release a sex tape of a woman with her boyfriend - 50 was not in the tape at all - without her knowledge or consent, in order to humiliate a fellow rapper. This is the second attempted bankruptcy filing to avoid paying the woman $5 million in damages after shaming her in public and causing her to have thoughts of suicide. It's pretty hard to be on 50's side on this one.

i had to badger my husband into doing a sleep study, and it turned out he had quite severe apnea. the doctors told us that spousal-badgering was by far the most common reason that people came in to get sleep studies. i think it's something that people have a hard time sensing for themselves, because they don't see themselves sleep.

i went to a school in colorado that played against other colorado schools in lacrosse, including columbine. didn't go to columbine myself.

show me people who have been forcibly institutionalized, sterilized, or even killed for being thought of as "unreasonable" or "without common sense" and i'll take this argument more seriously. there's a big difference between perpetuating stigma against a group of people who have been historically marginalized and oppressed for medical conditions over which they have no volition or control and the "everyone's going to be offended by something" you're describing.

hi! original poster here, writing from boulder, after having packed up all my belongings because i'm in the evacuation alert area! i posted this as part of a series of photos and posts about the horror of the wildfire, but was amazed by this one making something so awful look so much like something it wasn't. thanks for the lecture, though! i'll be sure to keep it in mind as i stay up all night waiting to see if we're evacuated!

Bouie also addresses why she believes addressing the institutions is more productive than addressing amorphous culture arguments, but I think everyone would agree that both the institutions and the families are essential to good education.

it was meant to be a joking way to underline the point that you're making more explicitly - i'm sorry it read more like reinforcing the idea of canada as unicorn happy land. :( was trying to show that police are police are police, regardless of nationality.

well yes, except for the anti-immigrant rhetoric around the border is clearly arguing that violent crime is skyrocketing relative to where it was. without even addressing what the baseline is and whether it's reasonable, it's clear that the trend is down, not up. combined with other recent research about lower rates of violent crime in areas with higher immigrant populations, it makes it extremely hard to believe that arguments that immigration needs to halt because it directly causes higher rates of violent crime are based on fact, rather than racism.

back when i was a first amendment absolutist, the issues that really challenged that position the most were around sexual harassment. sexual harassment laws, especially the "hostile work environment" standard, can be read as speech restrictions. eugene volokh, a law prof at UCLA, has written a lot on this (see, for example, http://www.law.ucla.edu/vol.... this is also an issue that, for better or worse, upper class WASP-y folks may find a personal connection to that could help them expand to some more radical issues.

thanks for the reply! i think we are on the same page with categorizing the "bad stuff" as the knee-jerk, relatively substanceless harshing - but i see a number of people who put all critique of pop culture into that category, whether it's the "THAT SUCKS" genre or the "i have a problem with some of the messages in this tv show/movie/song because it reinforces existing problematic societal messages" genre, so i think parsing that out a bit more is helpful.
i was also interested in how focusing on positivity was still helpful and refreshing for me, who engages mainly in the policy critiques that aren't the "opposite" of positivity. it's always a good reminder to focus on enthusiasm.

hi! thanks for weighing in. the situation i was describing was not an entirely hypothetical one and the person definitely felt like they'd been mislead and tricked into what amounted to false imprisonment with a hefty price tag. it was certainly not something that she imagined could result from calling a suicide hotline. my goal isn't to discourage people from calling these lines, but given that they generally advertise themselves as totally confidential, i think it's important for people to understand what that means for them. it may very well be different in other states, which i tried to indicate, as it's subject to individual state law, so there's not a blanket rule for everyone who calls the national hotline. as for citations, the ca permission for a psychiatrist to waive privilege in case of potential harm to self is CA Evidence code section 1024, and the code section permitting involuntary hospitalization is ca civil code 5150 et seq.

i don't really have any real alternatives to offer, but i wish i did. i've personally seen the good and the bad of reaching out to the mental health system for help in this kind of situation and would never want to tell anyone else what to do. i just wish there was a way to get the good without getting stuck in an institution for weeks - but that's a significant enough potential downside that someone should know about it when making a decision.

i'm working on a post about the ableist and sexist assumptions tied up with the "emo" label and was hoping to generate more material/evidence. your response was extremely helpful! i find that kind of thinking very problematic and am hoping to highlight some of it.
