Propping up other governments and their military NEVER works, it either back fires on us or the peasants. That's the strategy in Afghanistan. Put more troops in there for "humanitarian" projects and to train their military to take over the conflict (in 18 months). Plus, every occupying force in Afghanistan over 100's of years has run away with their tails between their legs. I like to go by the principles of the Star Trek's Federation -- if a planet never had contact with outsiders -- don't mess with them.

Health "Insurance" reform is a sham. We need Health Transformation, not Health Reform. We need socialized medicine, we need to model ourselves after other highly evolved nations like France, Germany, Switzerland, or yes dare I say CANADA. We are unevolved as a nation and as a people if we refuse to see the value of caring for EVERYONE equally who lives in this great country of ours.

Higher paid workers are not just losing jobs to overseas workers, they are losing jobs to younger versions of themselves. So firms and companies are hiring directly out of college so they can pay them less. This just happened to a friend of mine who is an amazing interior designer. She was recently laid off from the architecture firm where she worked (by the way, she said 50% of the architects and designers in Minneapolis are unemployed) and as she is looking for another job, she sees the preference for younger versions of herself with far less experience. Very discouraging.

Why should we be so different than any other civilized industrialized nation (Great Britain, France, Switzerland, Germany, Taiwan, Japan etc.) in assuring that all citizens gain access to health care without having it take a significant portion of their hard earned money? I ask, what is the difference between having a high tax rate (which they do in the Netherlands for example) where citizens pay minimal out of pocket expenses for things like health care, education, and child care and us who may mid range taxes but we still have to pay for everything? Money is money. Why not let the government provide needed services to everyone. The gov't has a much better track record than private entities at providing essential services. If the rich want to pay more for a higher level of services after the basics are covered for everyone --- LET THEM DO THAT. But assure baseline evidence-based, lower cost higher benefit services for everyone.

Corporate interest is trying to derail the health care debate. They have appropriated the "need for change," and decided they are going to dictate what that change will be in order to protect their profits. The amount of profit health insurance companies make (400 billion/year) could easily pay to insure everyone in the U.S. in a fair and equitable system. Watch "Sick Around the World" on the Frontline website. This is the best description so far of how five other industrialized nations provide universal health care (all five have different systems, but they are all non profit). We need to take the profit motive out of health care, just like we have done with education, public safety (fire, police) and view health care as a public good.
