I really am touched by your effort in responding to my post.
Replurking the conversation we are having in plurk:
Skip Z
That's a good statement of the dilemma of being student-centered but not project-based.
elizabethkoh
Skip Z Z are u suggesting some kind of dichotomy between project-based learning and student-centered?
bookjewel
It's tricky, isn't it? I often give the students who volunteer to go first a few extra marks for their effort!
GingerTPLCsays
I responded here. (the first post on top)
mindeleisays
I really like the focus of GingerTPLC's classroom. I have to agree that being "fair" isn't actually fair because some students need more in some areas than others. Providing equal opportunity (or as Ginger said, being equitable) is what is actually the most "fair" to all.
elizabethkoh
thks for all your reponses!!! i think GingerTPLC's suggestions were very useful and demonstrate how to be equitable to all students. will see how i can use her suggestions for my classroom this year...
so it's not exactly about fairness... more about being equitable ... providing fair opportunities.
GingerTPLCsays
You have to be sure you inform parents! Parents are sometimes the worst perpetrators of "equal = fair." You have to bring them on board. Start with the parents of bright kids and tell them that you're going to expect higher levels of thinking. (not more work) Then talk to the
parents of struggling students. Tell them you're going to give them work that challenges THEM and not work they can't do. Not too tough to use differentiated instruction strategies in your classes. Then tell them this also extends to behavior. Some kids will earn more trust by their work and conduct. Others will earn MORE supervision by their lack of work and proper conduct. But always put it on their shoulders. THEY'RE earning their + and - consequences. Then you can begin to use equitable. You'll have to frequenly revisit the idea of fair is equitable, not equal. They'll get it. Parents will *eventually* get it. Also, get your admin on board so s/he can back you when a parent begins to get edgy. AND DOCUMENT kids going right and wrong.
loonyhikersays
great post! i left a comment too
GingerTPLCsays
Ack! You're working at University level. I'm sorry. I think my blog comments are ok, but these here, maybe not so applicable!
elizabethkoh
GingerTPLC grateful for the advice. not so relevant, but still useful for whoever reads. And the principles are there -
elizabethkoh
loonyhiker thks for the great analogy!

Re: iPhone: Transfer Pictures and Videos from iPhone to XP

Thanks alot for this. I am contributing even though there is a difference between US and Denmark, Europe (Where I am lucky to be a librarian).

Let me start by saying that all contributers here are a great inspiration to me. There is no doubt that there are a lot of librarians making a huge difference for a lot of people everyday (and I am lucky to work with some fantastic librarians who do) - but it is a fact as well that there is a big challenge for libraries and that not all librarians is aware of how serious it is. I think that is the core. Mr. Godins puts a spotlight to that issue and I think that is important.

I am loving the fact that so many in the library field is reacting and showing that there is a future for libraries because many is aware (and yes almost all librarians have been training people to take intellectual initiative for a very long time).

So let´s continue to make it known what great difference libraries and librarians do everyday... Let´s communicate it, and let´s keep inventing new ways to inspire and help people navigate information, (un)learning and also give them good reading experiences. *** Enlight, entertain, enrich, empower, educate *** - Like Justin I will like to thank you all for this great discussion.
@janholmquist

Re: El-fejl kunne have kostet bibliotek

Jan Holmquist

Re: Children Will Teach Themselves to Read When They're Ready | Foundation for Economic Education

Interesting perspective.
Greetings to the author from a name brother from Denmark, Europe :)

Re: NaNoWriMovember is coming!

A big thank you for the Movember donation.
