Even Internet is a platform with protocols like http, tcp, udp it encourages innovation and diversity. Those protocols are owned by communities like IETF, W3.

However, Twitter, Facebook with their uncertain business models may not encourage developers with long term vision. Will anybody build a Google like app. on Twitter or Facebook?

We need some community leadership like IETF in the social networking platform.

Interesting discussion. Here are some 'crazy' ideas...
1. How about storing them on a p2p network of computers dedicated to this purpose. Legal issues and abuse need to be controlled by some one. A Wikipedia like non-profit structure may last longer.

2. A few timecapsules with the information around the world and may be in the moon as well :-) [if everything fails ]

If you are in a 'look up' mode, one search engine can suffice. However, if you are in a 'research mode' like looking for information about diseases or products, it is always a good idea to use multiple search engines starting with AAfter Search [ well I am biased :-) ]

If Twitter is for micro-'blogging', then WordPress is the right guy to just expand its features as a new update. All their existing installation will become possible blogging and/or micro-blogging platforms. Matt Mullenweg or anyone from the WordPress team can answer this if they have it on their road-map. I like the idea that blogs, comments, and Tweets will converge into a simple interface for input and for broadcast.

I think Twitter was using the incident to get some more users. Their growth is still not as comparable as that of Facebook.

I like your intention about the short URL portability, but at the age of Twitter/Facebook and increasing wall-garden, that may not happen.

We can reduce the one point of failure problem by having two short URLs. Web search engine AAfter.com already creates two short URLs at a time. Please, try us out, and give us feedback. We also have no problem to share our short url [aafter.us] database with any open source community. However, I am not following how 'use our own domain name' is going to work technically unless those domain points to our DNS server or every domains' .htaccess file is updated. Am I missing something?

Our concern is also the one point of failure, and the structure of the web. Our web search engine AAfter.com creates two short URLs [including bit.ly] to make it a little more fail-safe. We found out there are 50 more such services, and will use two of them in a random manner to reduce the chance of one point of failure.
