It is up to Google to limit the crapware for the good of the consumer.

I don't feel that Google should lock Android down the way that Apple does the iPhone, but as I say, they need to PROTECT IT. For one thing, they should make Android Market access mandatory for all carriers, and work to get all carriers to support the side loading of Apps as well. No one wants Google (I trust them even less than I do Apple, as a company) to dictate everything, but a few simple guidelines would be nice.

Re: Android vs iOS 2010: Open Source Cuts Both Ways

True, but how many mainstream users know to root their phone, or would have the nerve to flash the ROM (assuming they knew where to get the ROM and how to do it, and that they even can)?

Most mainstream assume all Android phones are alike, and take the one that looks coolest that is sold by their carrier...and those are the users Google is letting down.

Re: Box App Released for Android

For me, using cloud storage has replaced one of the main hassles I used to have with syncing my devices to the PC, that is transferring files. I would always forget to sync properly or regularly and therefore would often have multiple versions of poems or essays floating around, just to confuse myself.

Rather then syncing files back to on my PC (especially since these days I use multiple PCs), I now just save files to the cloud and then access them from whatever machine I am using at the time. No more multiple files, just one...on the cloud.

Re: HTML5 vs Flash: The Movie

Thanks for catching the typo. I still feel that delaying was a bad move and if it could have been avoided, it should have been.

How much different would the tablet scene be now if the Adam had released in July as planned? The iPad would not have had nearly a year as the sole option in a rapidly developing market, sharing the space with a device that had clear advantages in some areas over Apple magical thingamajig. That time can never be regained, and Apple has a massive lead, both in reality and in consumer perceptions.

Since then Notion Ink has said that the delay was due to the Tegra 2 not being ready, but at the time they were blaming it all on investors wanting to stall for a Christmas release and to be honest, there was no clear sign the product would ever launch at all. Fortunately there has been clear progress since then and most people are confident the Adam will come out, however the last few months of iPad sales show that I was not wrong at the stupidity of a move like that if it could have been avoided.

You can see the whole piece at:

http://www.mobilitysite.com...

Re: Review: Desk Genie from MobileFun UK

Good catch, my error. I wonder, did the HTC buses bring the press BACK to Nokia World as well?

However, I don't think it is exactly the same as what Nokia did. The kids with balloons maybe, but not the survival kit. Besides which, the survival kits had to be prepared in advance, so they couldn't have been a response to HTC sending buses to ferry the press to the event.

Re: New Apple iPods–The Upside

Wow...

A week or so ago an Apple fan commented that my bias and hatred for Apple meant I shouldn't be writing about them...now an Android fan calls me a "jackhole apple fanboy"...

Sounds like I am doing my job.

Re: iPhone 4 Sold Factory Jailbroken in China?

That price sounds right...and is one of the big reasons why $100 Shanzhai iPhone knockoffs dominate the Chinese market, along with much of SE Asia.

Re: Jolicloud 1.0 netbook operating system now available for download

Yes, I believe you can, just like on other Linux based install disks.

PS, that is intended as a response for the person posting BELOW me...sorry, it is early yet.

Re: FUD and Counter-FUD in the Android Market

When an application wants to access data that seems to be odd, I want to know why no matter what App it is or who developed it...I doubt I am unique in that. A case in point, following your quite helpful noting of my spelling error I began correcting it with an iPod Touch but it proved very difficult to use for that purpose and I missed some. I COULD use the Touch to edit the website but it was not the best tool for it.

The best tool for the task was clearly Steve.

Thanks for cleaning up after me Steve, do you also do windows?

Re: The iPad and Complementary Convergence

There is a good reason for it...I don't like balancing a computer on my legs, and all those hardware features you mentioned I simply don't need while reading a webpage on the couch. A big part of complementary convergence is limiting the number of features you don't need at any one time. A keyboard is wonderful if I am going to be typing. If not it is just dead weight.

As for your older article, no complentary convergence is a name for MY thoughts. If you want a name for your thoughts, think of your own.

Re: The iPad and Complementary Convergence

A very good point, but then those who are not gearheads don't tend to require all the somewhat silly and esoteric features we gadget fans do. Most of these issues are concerning Backlist titles where the contracts predate mainstream ebooks (which are the vast majority of books currently being published). These is the same lucrative vein Google wants to mine with Google editions...books where there is no clear ownership of the ebook rights, therefore grab em and publish until someone tells you to stop.

Re: Microsoft and ARM: The new WinTel?

Microsoft claims that Aero and most Win 7 drivers and applications run on WE7...porting that to an ARM chip is likely a good part of what the two companies are working on.

Re: Ebooks: Dangerous Trends

It would indeed be misleading but that was not what I said.

I said that the book by Murakami will be able to be read by only one device, and for that I am bundling the iPad/iPhone as a single platform connected by iBooks.

As for Wylie's plan I state they will be able to be read by the Kindle or Kindle software...but they will only be able to be purchased from Amazon.

As for who has the rights to the ebook sales, the publisher of the print version or the author (to be sold on much the way an author can sell movie rights separately from publishing rights) is up to the courts to decide and it is a very gray area....all I know is that as a consumer, when I can only purchase a commodity from a single vendor, that is bad. When I can only use that commodity once purchased with a single software platform controlled by the company I had to buy the commodity from, that's worse.

So you are right being able to shop ebooks for exclusive deals may be Author 1 Publishers 0, but it is also Readers 0.

Re: Dell Dropping Ubuntu PCs

Double checking it appears to be only UK for now (as I shop at Dell's UK site, I didn't think to check it on any other Dell site...my bad), but still indicative.

Re: Review and How-To: Gelaskins

I would second that...great images for any of you out there who, like me, walk on the dark side now and again.

Re: What’s With All The Padding?
