Living below your means allows you to have "cheat" days without feeling financial burdens. It's stressful not controlling your finances and not knowing what you would do if something significant happens.

Re: Avoiding The WordPress Theme Lock-in Effect

Totally see your point on the "proprietary" effect and lock-in using those themes, but honestly changing any theme is likely to require a varying degree of re-doing copy, design, customizations, etc. Divi definitely would require a lot more because of the page builder, but it's just the sacrifice you give at the expense of being able to quickly create pages and designs. It's so flexible and allows you to create a gorgeous page in minutes. Plus, you can customize the crap out of it. In addition, out of the box, it integrates with a ton of services such as woocommerce and bbpress. This saves a ton of money and time when building ecommerce sites and communities. The biggest win for me is that it puts small businesses in a great place to have a functional site with great design with less development time.

Re:

Whenever you're building a product or company, there's a MILLION things and directions you can go at any time. Anyone can suggest a tactic or thing to do, but the best are truly focused on "why" and the mission.

Sure, Apple has a ton of reserves to do nearly anything they want, but they sure insist on getting it done right no matter when they do it. Growing to be come one of the biggest companies in the world certainly helps explain that they're doing great.

Re: The Story Behind Buffer’s New(ish) Content Suggestions

Love these, but I often find myself reformatting the messages. Although I have far fewer requests from clients to help out, I face the similar dilemma with email: do I start by age of the email or difficulty?

I found that as long as I pick a strategy and stick with it, I'm most happy, productive and produce the best work. Assuming all clients have similar deadlines and priorities, some days I want to knock out a bunch at once; but other times I want to spend time on the ones that I know are more difficult challenges.

It depends on the cup of coffee I guess ;) Thanks again for putting this together! Have a great weekend.

Re: Two more Happiness Heroes join the Buffer team: Mary and Adam

Congrats, Mary and Adam! It's clear that people aren't going to pay $2 to read a blog post. It's becoming evident that content is becoming more open and collaborative. I'd like to see a model that makes more eyes see and be interested in the content they want to read. It'd be great if it was easier for people to publish great work for a larger and possibly more niche audience.

I just don't think the way newspapers (or any of the ways traditional media companies) monetize are going to work in the future. We're seeing it in print. Far less in TV, but still very expensive to get the same ROI as newer technologies. Definitely a time for marketers and advertisers to rethink how they ask for customers on TV. Native internet advertising is much more tailored to the kinds of things we want to see and is only getting better.

Re: The T-Shaped Web Marketer

I also agree that analytics is a critical web marketing skill. I can see why they're going after Vine, but I see many similarities to why artists went after YouTube. Vine provides value through creativity, which are bound to increase reputation and brand awareness. If you're an artist, you should take advantage of this platform to reach your fans -- not the other way around.

Re: Mobile-Only Magic: How Instagram Just Killed What Makes It Special - by Taylor Hatmaker

i disagree.
