This article doesn't mention the woman was mostly unemployed since 2006. She had lived there with her parents since they first moved in. $4,477/month rent is cheap for a 4-bedroom apt in NYC, but it's a lot of moola to pay if you're single and jobless. Also, to qualify for SCRIE one can't earn more than $50,000. But that only came into affect a few months ago. The previous year the max was $29,000. Who's to say she actually earned $78,000 per year doing AIrBNB; that she was fortunate enough to rent 3 out of 4 bedrooms straight for 365 days per year? I recall when I was unemployed a few years ago, HRA case workers suggested I take in a roommate to help pay my rent. In my case that wasn't possible since I live in a studio apt (thus no privacy). Sadly, the issue here is lack of affordable housing. People are stuck in apartments they can no longer afford, with no place that's affordable to move to. Thus they try to hang onto them by any means necessary.

Re: New Poster for THE BUTLER Starring Forest Whitaker

Very strong, powerful graphics. I can put you in touch with others in your area. However, they and we are all in the same boat (and it seems to be sinking). Let's put our heads together and see what we can all do to stay afloat. This time of year --with the holidays -- is hardest on us. Usually students and recent grads don't earn much at their first jobs, though you mentioned yours is a part-time job -- what would your salary be if you were working full-time hours? When I got my first job my salary was $50 per week (of course, this was many decades ago), but I mention it to make a point. Getting a job then was as difficult as it is now and employers were looking for people with experience. But how did one get experience if one was just starting out in the work force?

Be grateful for the fact that you do have a job, are getting experience, and will be able to add that to your resume, to get a better job. Additionally, most students and grads may still be living at home, or get funds from their families, which helps. Most adults don't have that option.

Re: http://www.the405club.com/post/2104276953

The Republicans have heard this many times but only want to "benefit" their own. They also have a conflict of interest: most voting to continue the tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires, are millionaires themselves. As Senator Bernie Sanders said, there's a class war going on: http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Re: http://www.the405club.com/post/1637180425

Agree. Not sure why there is also punctuation missing (apostrophes) as well as the letter "n" in "not". Perhaps this was an intended rough, imperfect image -- as opposed to sweet and perfect?

Re: http://www.the405club.com/post/1579489946

For many of us it WILL be dinner -- in 2011. Not to waste good bread, we are picking up loaves that are being discarded, to be used as the bread in thebreadline. I, myself, am presently having dinner meals at a different church each day of the week. Last Friday night the designated church was unable to take us all in and 4 of us went home without anything. This is now my second week standing in line outside a church hoping we won't be turned away. What has America come to?

Re: http://www.the405club.com/post/1570450447

Thank you Elisa and Tony. I feel this was the least I could do to bring attention to our plight. The opportunity presented itself -- or rather, we created it -- and we took it from there. Part of the point is that we need to find ways to be more vocal, be visible -- instead of passive and invisible. I know how tough it is to get involved in something when there's no money for transportation to an event, etc. I've been there, myself, many times. I do agree our detractors will be singing a different tune when they wind up in our shoes (and some have). Let's try and think positive thoughts and see what we all can do.

Re: http://www.the405club.com/post/1062308318

Love the graphic.Inspiring!!!

Re: http://www.the405club.com/post/943523259

I was there. My laptop has been in the repair shop for 2.5 days and the pay-per-use computer in my neighborhood I was using last night has an old version of IE. It double-pasted everything I copied and I wound up having to redo the draft 3 times before I was even able to save it. Then noticed the article got posted twice (I always check after a post goes up). I couldn't even send you a reply to you. I'm presently at the repair shop, which has better computers.

Re: http://www.the405club.com/post/748171489

We would certainly like more jobs created -- since there is presently only one job available per every 5-6 job seekers. But jobs aren't being created fast enough. Meanwhile, extended benefits are an absolute necessity. After all, all the money we receive goes right back into the local economy to neighborhood merchants for goods and services. And here's another quote from NELP: "Since 1959 Congress has never let extended unemployment benefits expire when the national unemployment rate is above 7.2 percent." Why are they doing this now?

Re: http://www.the405club.com/post/619160788

Umm... not for me.Don't have the stomach for that.
Next!

Re: http://www.the405club.com/post/576149886

Great story! I have no idea where "Pret" is, and I wonder if an electronics store would hire a 67-year-old female.

In the summer of 1993 (when I was last laid off) I passed a comedy club on 81st and Second with a help wanted sign in the window. I inquired and got the job -- it was for ticket sales and reservations. Last summer I passed a "juice bar & grill" in my neighborhood with a sign asking for a cashier. Great, I thought! I walked in to give the guy my name and was told there had been quite a few college kids who inquired. (I told him to keep my number, for the future, but never heard from him.) I responded to a reception job at a Pilates studio; same results.

These days, even for waitressing or being a receptionist in a hair salon, they expect you to know their computer systems. At this point I'd be happy to clean toilets in Equinox but I won't get hired.

Re: http://www.the405club.com/post/543104257

It's very easy to tell the long-term unemployed to "work at a movie theater, go to a temp firm and see if they can pick up anything else" when there are no openings -- and too many other job-seekers taking these jobs. Or ANY jobs. I am certain those who have been unemployed the longest have tried, and to no avail.People have taken pay cuts, "dumbed-down" their resumes... and have still been told they are over-qualified -- especially those who are over 50.

The answer is more jobs need to be created. Another extension would help in the meantime, and those who get UI benefits put it back into the economy by buying groceries and other goods.

Re: http://www.the405club.com/post/531296529

Apparently, this is not the first job fair that the AARP sponsored that was a bust: "Employment seekers attending an AARP Foundation job fair this week in Phoenix say they left frustrated after the event failed to deliver an estimated 35 employers and some direct hiring." http://tinyurl.com/y5lsrqj

Here's a link to 20 photos that were taken at the New York event on April 12th: http://tinyurl.com/y3anrxv
