There's only so much we can do to preempt those who want to argue in bad faith, but building a system where we acknowledge, define, and actively work towards the values we think are actually good, rather than just ~*~assuming~*~ we all know what they are is where we start.

From there, we highlight the fact that mutually created consensus reality is not the same as relativism or nihilism; in many ways just the opposite, because everything we do matters, here. All of our beliefs and values matter a great deal. And that's different.

Honestly, the history of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror is one of people writing each other and playing in each others' worlds. Byron, Mary Shelley, Poe, Verne, Baudelaire, all leaders in and subjects of fandom and fanfiction.

And that's not even COUNTING the Lovecraft mythos. :)

One main point in my essay in the first link is that we'll have to both respect the otherness of whatever AGI arises AND seek to make sure (as much as we can) That it arises out of conditions that don't hard-code into it a worldview that uses killing as its main guidepost.

If we can figure out a way to code non-rational experiences of consciousness, that would be best, but if we can even just provide a ground-up learning experience of more systems of operation than just violence, it will provide any militarily-developed machine consciousness with something of a contrast.

That's the hope, anyway.

I'm glad you enjoyed them. Sorry about the paywall in the second one, but the first is free to view and distribute.

I can't remember who it was (Possibly Derrida?) who said that we have to build moral systems as though those who will be subject to their rules already exist, rather than creating the situation, and then running to play catchup. That's the perspective I'm advocating, here, because, as you say, one day we WILL have truly autonomous generated intelligences, and if they arise out of a history of violence, it Will have an impact on what kind of consciousnesses they become.

And I don't mind the tropes, either, so long as we realise that's just one version of the story we've been telling ourselves. Personally I like trotting them out and then subverting them, as with the Terminator TV series ;)

I could go on, but I think you see my point, yes? That Terminator and AI and Asimov's "Three Laws Safe" and Robocop are not only in evidence of using tropes but, in essence, have BECOME tropes, themselves? Good.

I won't even worry about explaining to you the use of all caps as an emphatic and a hyperbolic instrument, let alone defining hyperbole as a rhetorical device, because I'm certain you understand them.

It seems to Me that A) you're looking to score gotcha points on minutia rather than dealing with the actual content of my comment, and B) You failed.

But let's not fight. Seriously. Read the originally linked material, please. Let's change the nature of this conversation.

This conversation is stagnating. People are still just REACTING to this with old "AI Will Kill Us ALL!!" tropes, as if the nature of autonomous created/generated intelligences or consciousnesses was a foregone conclusion, rather than something that we, in interacting with said, will have a hand in developing.

Is this a serious question? Yes. Is this automatically an existential threat? Not by a long shot.

For far more complex and nuanced considerations of the implications of these questions, look back TWO YEARS to Johanna Bryson & David Gunkel's symposium "The Machine Question: AI, ETHICS AND MORAL RESPONSIBILITY" (main title also being the title of Gunkel's book), in which SEVERAL scholars took up the question of the moral status of independently intelligent and creative machines & deeply explored it.
