I guess as an impoverished student who has lacked insurance since I was 20 (so, for 12 years), and got bad credit before i EVER had a credit card just for my hospital bills from things i never could have foreseen (random infection, etc)... i will never be able to own a house or buy a new car because even after paying off ALL my hospital bills, my credit score is still too low to get even the worst credit card or financing.

Anyway, as a result of the ACA, I recently got a letter in the mail saying I qualify for Oregon Health Plan (our state program), which used to only be open to me if i were pregnant and/or had AIDS. I'm assuming I got the letter because I qualify for food stamps so they know I'm broke. I can't wait to sign up and never have to worry again that some random injury/disease will put me in debt for another 10 years and screw up my credit even more. I want to have kids soon (once i'm done with my degree in a year) and they shouldn't have to suffer because I didn't have insurance when I had a kidney infection when I was 20. Not just not having insurance (I hope after college I'll get into my chosen career, journalism, and have coverage for me, my guy, and our future kids, but since so many writer-reporters freelance now, that's not so likely), but also not getting to have things I could have bought with financing/credit if my credit weren't so shitty due to lack of insurance in the past. Most of my friends are in the same boat with debt and no insurance so it's not just me. In fact I don't know anyone with insurance, and I'm 32.

Since my partner is a fine dining cook [insurance for highly skilled cooks in restaurants where meals cost $300/person? owners can't afford it! seriously], i will probably be the one who will have to get insurance for our kids and us in our future old age, and if that somehow doesn't pan out, i need an alternate plan like the ACA. may not be perfect, but right now it's keeping me from worrying quite so much.

Re: an open letter to sinéad o’connor, re: miley cyrus.

Do you realize a new episode of Hannah Montana hasn't come out for over TWO YEARS?? Do you have a statistic to back that up with? I was an IV heroin user from age 21-32 and have known hundreds of heroin users either very well or in passing... I have met maybe 3 people who weren't addicts. Sure, I know people who have just tried it a few times -- but typically they stop right away, I've never known anyone who has tried it more than 10 times who hasn't gone through withdrawal at LEAST once, usually way more than once. And most addicts stay addicted for years. Therefore, the heroin being used by the people who have tried it 1-10 times is a tiny fraction of the overall amount of heroin being used.

For one thing, heroin has such a horrible reputation that NO ONE tries it unless they are incredibly self-destructive, rebellious, or are dealing with major trauma (for me it was all of the above). There are no "casual users" because people see it as so addictive that anyone sane who might be able to use it casually will never try it to begin with. It's not like drinking where there's a whole class of people who can do it once in a while and be fine. By the time you even TRY heroin, you have either gone through some really messed up stuff or you don't care if you throw your life away. This virtually ensures that the vast majority of people who try it will get sucked into addiction because the heroin will alleviate their problems so much that it becomes irresistible.

My blog: http://storiesfromthefire.b...

Re: Why I'm Not Crazy: True Detective's Case Against Maggie

I think there are clues, but it's impossible to tell which ones will be significant!

Re: Why I'm Not Crazy: True Detective's Case Against Maggie

He didn't use any semi-colons. And I DID support them -- all of them -- including my current fiance. Most of these boyfriends were also living with me, so they lived rent free, ate my food, drove my car if I had one, sold my stuff to feed their drug habits, etc. I have supported my fiance for various periods of time, and he has also helped support me, when I was in school. But a YEAR? Wow, if I lived off someone that long, I would feel awful. How am I making women look like hypocrites? The only way I had a car was that I found one that cost $800 on Craigslist. If you think this is rich, you should try living that way. That doesn't mean I should have to support their addictions. I got clean several years ago and I've been with my amazing boyfriend for 4 years. He always works (or looks for work if he doesn't have a job) and is the best thing that's ever happened to me (not because he has a job, but because of everything about him). Our combined income is still right at the poverty line -- it's not that I care about money, but I want whoever I'm with to make an effort instead of living off me. If I were rich, I would be more generous, but when I was literally starving while that my boyfriend(s) spent my money, that's unacceptable, and I don't understand how you could say otherwise, as you did in your first comment.

Just because I had a sketchy past doesn't mean I should be okay with supporting deadbeat boyfriends. I may have been an addict, but I never stole and I supported myself the entire time, as well as supporting guys I was dating. I didn't "immediately" date another one. I was an addict for 10 years and during that time I had maybe 5 boyfriends, each for 6 months or so. As with all relationships, they seemed like a good idea at the beginning. At least I didn't stay with my abusers for years like some women do. Honestly my relationships were the least of my problems. But having to support men who were physically and verbally abusive while they sat and watched TV certainly didn't help (if I suggested that they should get a job or that maybe they could sell their CDs/books so I didn't have to sell all of mine, the yelling, screaming, and throwing things would start all over again. I ended up selling every CD, record, and book I owned to support them, as well as most of my clothes, while the boyfriend(s) never sold anything of theirs).

I still don't understand you calling me "rich" when I said in my very first comment that I have lived below the poverty line for most of my adult life (I'm 32). Or how you said I should be happy to support my boyfriends. My own problems and mistakes shouldn't justify men to take advantage of me financially and otherwise. I think YOU should look at your values and wonder why you would tell a perfect stranger that I should be supporting deadbeat boyfriends. As I said, with my current boyfriend, who is amazing, respectful, a hard worker, and just overall a perfect guy... during his periods of unemployment I was happy to pay all the bills/rent because I knew he was trying to find work as hard as he could, and I had seen him hold down a job for months/years. It's totally different when the guy hasn't had a job for years and is making no effort to find one.

Re: ASUO presidential candidate Thomas Tullis released from Lane County jail

Oregon doesn't use bail. It is one of two states where you can't bail out, which is meant to be an equalizing force so that it's not just rich people getting out of jail pending their court dates. You are stuck in county until you get to trial. If you're there for a non-violent offense, they will release you pending arraignment. If you have a history of not showing up for your court date, they will hold you until arraignment and then let you go until your court date. This was obviously not a violent crime and I'm not even sure why he was held at all. Usually he would have gotten a citation, booked, and released. This is true even for stuff like drug dealers... anything non-violent. Don't ask me why I know all this.

Re: The (Unintentional) Amazon Guide to Dealing Drugs

Ha... hahaha... try cold turkey heroin withdrawal. At the beginning it lasted about three weeks for me, by several years in it would last over a month where I couldn't leave the house, function, eat, sleep, or anything else. Kratom is definitely addictive, though, (I haven't done it, but my friends have) and it always annoys me when stories about drugs do absolutely NO research... potassium for decontamination? Really? Haha, as if drug dealers care about that...

Re: Rest in Peace, Google Glass: 2013-2014

We do many things because of what others will think, not because of self esteem issues but because we are part of a shared culture. If you really don't care what people think, you could leave your house in your pajamas, insult strangers whom you find unattractive, commit random acts of vandalism, take a cart full of groceries in the 10 item lane, etc. We do many things because they are conventional and allow us to be accepted by those around us. Not because we are insecure, but because shared behavior and values are the glue that holds society together. This doesn't require marching in lockstep, but some things, like google glass, are just too far outside the bounds of what most people find okay.
