The Nerdy Hippie is a sensitive, caring soul -- something this former Catholic schoolgirl ain't. But maybe I'm just used to folks giggling when you insist there's a difference between balanced or unbalanced plaid. (Even with my aging eyes, I can also still pick out a herringbone, Glen plaid, or houndstooth across a crowded school gym.)

Addendum: Lest we be taken for elitist snobs, I just want to point out that I shop WalMart weekly, which sort of takes the sheen off my elitist creds. (Or does starting a post "Lest we be taken for elitist snobs" restore some of the luster?)

This all started when I saw something about the iBreath, a breathalyzer you can plug into your iPhone, on the same day I got a WalMart flyer trumpeting great deals on the iPhone. Which started me wondering: what is the virtual alcohol content of iBeer? Which led to my wondering if the WalMart iPhone might include iRinds to go along with the iBrewski and the iBreath, which led to my using my pedestrian Razr to call the NH on her supercool iPhone which led to this.

The moral of the story: keep away from iBeer. It's potent stuff.

Perhaps the Lavender Menace explains the continued spike in gun sales over the last month. Handgun and automated weapons sales have increased by the greatest margin.

Folks buying the guns say they're just protecting their second amendment rights, but it surely can't hurt to have some firepower on hand just in case a pack of marauding deviants and their deluded terrorist allies decide to mount a frontal assault on the institution of marriage.

Good Lord -- they're brazen enough to announce their plans on Facebook and then take over the streets in broad daylight, so don't think it can't happen here.

Just as I believe Hillary would have been a far superior President than Kerry, Richardson, or Daschle, I believe that she would be a far superior Secretary of State than that same trio. Our current President-elect has a clear affinity for strong women and I hope that he will find a prominent role for her within the administration -- State or AG, perhaps? -- if that's how she wants to continue to serve the country.

In 1992, my dad and I watched Hillary in a CBS interview. Halfway through, my dad turned to me and said, "I wish I could vote for her instead of her husband. She is one sharp cookie." He still wished he could have voted for her in 1996 -- the last national election he voted in before he died. I can't know for sure, but I suspect if he could have, he'd have joined my mom in voting for Hillary during the primaries. Though he was often vexed and perplexed by his mouthy daughters, he really appreciated strong women. I do know one thing he often said late in his life, as he saw changes he never anticipated, that he would probably say now: "You know, it's about time."

Of course, the really crucial element of your earthquake preparedness plan is to stay in the camper. There's no safer place to be in an earthquake or a tornado than a travel trailer.
