"Virtue signaling" is the attempt of people devoid of achievements to carve out for themselves some sort of positive virtue. This is found mostly, but not exclusively, in people who demonstrate in public (read: "call attention to my virtue since I have nothing else to make me distinguished.") In the US public demonstrations in the streets are a way of signalling that liberals are superior in virtue to the rest of us. Its main attraction lies in the fact that you can "signal" your moral superiority without having to do anything to justify such posturing. Fundamentally, the nice thing about such posturing is that it costs yourself the absolute minimum of achievement.
