Malamute, let's get back to the subject, protecting those who can't protect themselves, the unborn, the terminally ill, etc. Enough character assassination, let's just call it what it is. You, and people like you are ok with murdering babies and old and sick people. Let's not use those pretty euphemisms like abortion and assisted suicide and euthanasia. I'll take a stand: Abortion is murder. Period. Assisted Suicide is murder. Period. Euthanasia is murder. Period. And to save you the trouble, I'll answer your question - Yes, I want to impose my morality on everyone.

KAELEN BURTON is the only one who has the COURAGE to use her name here (Tim Johnson - is that really your name?). It's so easy to sit behind the anonymity of the internet and throw stones.
@malamute - you should be mindful to not threaten Kaelen as I will be vigilant - you are not as anonymous as you think you are.
Kaelen's only mistake here was thinking that people on this Island actually care about the dignity of someone else's life. I know there are a handful of people who do care - they just don't read the Beachcomber.

I am at a loss for words. I have heard abortion called a lot of things, but "honorable" has never been one of them. There was no mention in Kaelen's letter that she intends to judge or guess at the intentions of those who have had abortions, I take away from her letter that she is concerned about all people - babies, the elderly, the sick, and that this group will work to protect all life. I don't think any woman who has had an abortion would say it was "honorable". It is a tragedy for all involved, the mother, the father and especially for the baby who lost his/her chance for a life.

Taking kids out of math class to drain a field? No wonder the U.S. can't compete with other countries when it comes to math and science. I don't know Mr. Brazill, and my kids never had him for math, but I would have been outraged if my kids had been pulled from class to do this work. It seems Mr. Brazill may have had his priorities mixed up. I also question the legality of using minors to do unpaid work around the school. Perhaps these kids should be compensated for their efforts?

In reply to your comment above "These people are islanders. They come to your homes and know your families", Who are they? You can't drop a bomb like that and leave it. Name these people so we can be warned and safe. If they are coming into our homes, I assume they may be craftsmen or others? You have an obligation to warn others since you know something. Are you afraid of legal action? They can't sue you if what you say is true. Are you afraid of worse things? They already broke into your home - maybe they did work on your home and that's how they knew what you had there. You are the only one who can make us aware of these people. Start talking!

This is now becoming clear to me. Since Tom Stewart isn't around anymore, you and your ilk have had to find another person to disparage. I remember a time when Mr. Stewart could do no right by some in this town. He was criticized when he cut down trees on his own property. He was criticized when he planted trees on his own property. Now Mr. Bangasser has been demonized simply because he was doing what he is entitled to do by law. I'm glad the VMICC took their toys and went home. Good riddance.

Very well stated Ms. LaFayette. It's shameful that the editor doesn't know any better. Vashon deserves better than the Beachcomber. This paper should quit pretending to be anything other than what it is - a community feel-good paper. Stick to the cute stories about babies at the Strawberry Festival and reporting on the awesome kids of this community. Don't stray into anything close to "real" reporting - it always gets you in trouble. I just hope the officers who patrol this island know that 99.999% of us don't share your hatred or disdain for the police force. Shame on the Beachcomber!

Mea culpa indeed. You don't need a diversity consultant - just a bit of common sense. One saving grace here- so few people actually read your paper, and fewer take it seriously - that there's no chance anyone will be affected by your "journalism", Your white liberal guilt leaked out all over that story and the subsequent op-ed piece. As I've said before, Vashon deserves better.

This sounds like a way to CYA Beachcomber. You failed to report the entire story (as pointed out by many people in the comment section of the original story), you failed to get facts straight, and you continue to show your bias. Vashon deserves better.

Arsonists are prosecuted all the time - the evidence is destroyed in those cases too. We will continue to have a drug problem on Vashon as long as the authorities turn a blind eye to this kind of thing. This is a shame. When do we say "enough"?

File this one under "Only on Vashon", because this is the only place I have ever lived where people feel they have the absolute right to control what businesses do, sell, display, and charge. If it wasn't so destructive, it would be funny! Um, I wonder why they've never complained about those flags in front of Giraffe. I find those ugly and distracting. Perhaps I should "make" them take them down. I can't even say that with a straight face. If they want an ugly store-front, that is their right!

You are both obviously sore because Island Lumber didn't call you and solicit your opinion about putting up a sign on their own property with their own money. Is it safe? It's no more of a safety hazard than people who stand at the 4 way waving signs ("Car Wash" or "Save the Slugs"). Is it right? Or is it left? Is it appropriate for Vashon? Will, I'm sure you think you are doing Vashon a great public service by bringing up these burning questions. Maybe your next novel "set on the Island" will explore these and other critical issues. It might be a good read to take my mind off of the horrors going on in Washington D.C. right now.
