The problem is a lack of money not a lack of cops, if the cop at Lowes wasn't being hired by Lowes he would probably be at home. When cops guard a store or garage they are doing that for extra work on days off.

The store pays for that, just like in downtown, the building pays for the cop that directs traffic outside its garage.

just because some clown with a camera phone said 50mph doesn't mean he's actually going that fast, this article is obviously strongly opinionated towards one side, don't you think it ight just be possible he exaggerated a little on the speed. Also even if he was going that fast I really doupt he was blowing through the bank rd stop sign at 50.

I'm guessing this happened around 5-7am. Especially at that time it really isn't that big of a deal to jump on the gas after rolling by the library. The man doesn't deserve all this bull just for speeding up a couple hundred yards short of the speed limit sign.

Come on, just tell the story and leave your opinions out of it. While I'm not an Obama supporter, this guy was a bit of a nut and extremist, and I certainly don't agree completely with him either. Still as stated he wasn't doing anything wrong, just demonstrating his views, which is not uncommon for many people on island(just on the opposite end of the spectrum).
I will say I would have had more respect for him if he was from Vashon.

well I don't care too much 'bout the pic, I would have taken it too had I been there(wasn't like he could have saved anyone).

Completely agree w you on the flag though. It's an American company, which is based in and distributes products to the US. There was absolutely no reason for that little line to be in the article.

I also don't see a problem with the sign. If they want to put a sign up in front of their store on their property then so what. I don't really find it that obnoxious. The only thing I really have a problem with are the developments popping up around town. But then again it's their land and they can do with it what they want. I'll still shop at IL and their sign makes no difference. I mean come on there's way more things to complain about than some one's sign. If your that upset then pack up and leave town, as I said there's many things that have come or gone on the island that I don't like but if it's that bad maybe you're the one that needs to leave, I know that's what I'll probably do in a few years.

Hey screw you buddy. This guy made some valid points and I think it's pretty respectable that a student sent in a responce to all the previous articles, and there's no need for you to be a d-bag w your comment. While I think that grinding is tasteless and is maybe not the most apropriate for a school event, I don't agree with all the new rules and policies the school is adopting. I don't think any good will come of telling kids how they can dance or by cancelling dances. Maybe they can put on some better music instead of the tasteless rap and hip-hop they play, or try to figure out other ways to influence a better overall attitude. However ultimately it should be up to the students how they want to dance, there should be as few rules as possible(within reason) as to what they are or aren't aloud to do. How about a rock themed dance or a country/western dance? Stuff like that would influence a more positive attitude without just righting up rules, I personally think they'd be way more fun too.

Completely agree with the article. They're not cheating everyone, they've gone through all the paper work etc just let them build their d@mn dock. The only things the environmentalist have done is find excuses to hold them up, you have no solid case, all you've done is find ways to work the system to create delays.

You're ridiculous, just let them do their jobs. You obviously have no case or you wouldn't need to be out "taking it into your own hands". I would hate to be a worker and have to put up with this cr@p from people like you.
They should have you arrested for trespassing or better yet just continue working and let you get run over or crushed by the equipment.

If you have a problem take it up with the CEOs or go to court don't hassle the workers.

I also think it is rediculous that this was not made into a bigger deal.
You have articles about a rope swing and the gravel mine plastered on the front page yet this blows over like it's nothing.
Also I don't care how many kids were hurt on the swing, one, it's private property and two, it was an accident, $hit happens, no need to go raising a big stink about anything that might hurt someone just learn from the incident and use better judgment next time.

First of all the conveyor dock will be enclosed so I doubt much of any sand will really be dumped over into the sound. Also when the tide comes in and out that washes away/levels out any sand they may be dumped so I really don't believe that makes a difference. You talked about stuff getting kicked up, I assume from the props on the barge/tugboat, next time your at the north end ferry dock go look under it or off the side and notice there is still grass/marine life living down there despite all the pilings and despite the big ferries pulling in and out all day every day.
At the gravel pit I would guess that they do no more than maybe 4 runs across the sound with the barge. That's nothing compared to the ferries so I don't believe that makes much of a difference either, plus that dock extends out several hundred feet off shore, which puts it far away from your precious eel grass. Also I was always under the impression that piers promote marine life, look at all the people that go diving off the Standard Oil dock by portage.
I was down by the gravel pit in my boat a few weeks ago and while the deck isn't in place yet the pilings are so you can get an idea of what it will look like, to me it seems to be much less of an impact to the environment than the old wooden dock which had been there forever.

If you want to talk about jobs, even if the dock causes fish to die(I don't believe it will) I can assure you that the gravel mine will create far more jobs than could possibly be lost by some herring dieing(or anything that dies as a result).

If indeed there are toxins in the soil they are being washed into the sound every time it rains regardless of whether or not they are mining. Explain to me why runoff from the soil/sand that is currently exposed is any different from runoff from soil/sand that is several feet lower(when they start digging).

Also if you're talking about drinking water then I would think rain is soaking through all that "toxic soil" as we speak and making it's way into drinking wells.

As for the pilings I don't understand how removing a few hundred creosote wooden pilings and replacing with 50 steel pilings is enviromentaly damaging.

Are you kidding? Just let them build their dock! The pilings are already driven, are you saying they should then remove them? If anything that's more environmentally damaging. Seems to me like any damage has already been done by putting them in so they might as well just finish it.

Also how is loading sand onto a barge harmful to the Sound? What do you think lines the bottom of the sound, sand and mud! It's not like they're dumping chemicals down there. I could understand all this commotion if they were trying to build and oil refinery plant or battery dumping ground.
You guys are whining about then re-opening a gravel which already exists and finishing a dock that already has the pilings driven. It's not like they're trying to establish a mine at ober park or something.

I have yet to hear a solid argument against Glacier, just that people don't like it. Just leave them alone ad let them get on with business.

I don't care if it was Vashon community members who lobbied for it or how hard they worked, I don't want 1million of my tax dollars going towards an absolutely unneeded "state-of-the-art performance hall," on Vashon. If you want to expand your art foundation have an effing fundraiser but to take public tax money is BS. Just the other week they were talking about how they don't have the money to repair Dockton Rd yet now they're building brand new theaters?
I have no problem with my money going towards road maintenance or even a complete overhaul of the high school but this is just ridiculous, especially at this time.

What a watse! I'll admit I'd never support this kind of funding for an art project but this is absolutly not the right time regardless. As mentioned, school lay offs, school bond shot down and large state deficits, not sure how this money was awarded or why.

Dead on. While I must admit I'm not really concerned at all about the environment when it comes to cars. I'm a car guy and no tree hugger comes between me and my vehicles, I'm more than happy to make an effort to be eco friendly with other stuff, however.
That being said, I'm also 100% against hybrids for almost these exact reasons. If you want to be environmentally friendly, then more power to you but buying a hybrid is not a way to do it. Just like explained here, they are actually worse for the environment. The plant that makes the prius batteries is one of the most polluting factories. Also the batteries don't last that long and it's extremely bad for the environment to dispose of them. Also the prius uses special tires which are more expensive to make and have to be replaced more often. Finally the prius is expected to last only 100k miles before it pretty much toast. While my truck might use more gas if I keep it for 300k miles or more I feel like that's way less of an overall impact.
It's ridiculous, all these people jumping on the "look at me I have a hybrid" bandwagon, and how it's considered politically correct to have one.
As stated and in my pinion the most economical and environmentally friendly cars are small gas cars, usually the older ones. Such as small VW, Hondas etc. Small diesels in small cars can blow the hybrids away in terms of mileage.

I don't know the exact demographics, but if you go outside your house or leave the nursing home and look around you'll see retirees are definitely not in the majority. When I look around, I see a people from every age group and the last thing I would describe Vashon as would be a retirement community.
I thought I read that Vashon is about 10% 65+ and like 20% under 18.

While I voted for the school it was a tough call, on one hand I'm sure this would be one of the cheapest times to do it as labor costs are down but on the other this certainly isn't the time to raise taxes.
I will say, VHS is in need of either a serious overhaul or a totally new facility, this is due to a combination of a poor original design, shady maintenance and low budget.

You trespass at an active construction site, park your kayak under a huge hanging steel piling and then whine about how they're endangering your life because they didn't instantly move the piling away? They should have had all of you arrested or even better just drive the piling in with you under it.
Are you serious? You people are ridiculous.
These guys are just doing their jobs and don't need to put up with crap from you. If you have a problem take it up with the CEOs or take them to court, oh wait you did and lost every step of the way.
