I have lived it for the last 5 years while working on my projects, my clients projects and on behalf of others. It is a SACRIFICE, there's no challenging that. But it is worth it for the education, the experience and the knowledge that you can accomplish anything that you set your mind to.

Totally agree with gym membership (if you live urban and cant access parks, beaches, etc) because your output is about to triple in terms of hours spent on the grind.

While I was able to reel in my expenses and costs pretty quickly, I also made the mistake of not looking for additional financial assistance (outside of grants/VC$) for myself and my family. Trying to start a new business in the middle of a recession is crazy at best, so swallow your pride up front and reach out to your Federal/State offices to see what programs exist to help you make the transition successfully...

We were able to secure childcare assistance (which helps not having them running around home-office) and some food $ (nothing crazy just enough to not see drop in diets/etc.) but even that small amount makes the difference between healthy salads and ramen noodles.

Best of luck to everyone! You can do it...

Re: Don’t Sell Crap Just Because You Can

Thankfully, this is one of the first lessons that I learned as a salesman and entrepreneur. This is nothing more damaging to the long-term success of a business and your professional reputation than selling crap to make a "quick buck". funny part is, that "quick buck" will cost you more time in the long run...so how quick was it really? Thanks!

Re: Using Social Media to Help Launch Your Company

Great little checklist post for new Entrepreneurs looking to get started. The Management and the Spice are what most business owners are missing once they do finally get involved in Social Media. I've used tweetdeck for years for both my accounts as well as client campaigns, and couldn't generate/manage what I do without it. @Marc Brodeur is right about maximizing the functionality of photos/video in Facebook (and SEO too...). Must say I was surprised to NOT see social media info/contacts for Author/Amsterdam integrated into piece? Your trilogy comes very timely for our group, thanks again for sharing.

Re: Why I Chose Starting a Business Over Grad School: Part 3

Great finish Marc. Recognizing the limitations of some roles in regards to access to communication tools and tele-commuting, I think that any job can be done outside of traditional 9-5 hours as long as your customer is looking to receive/consume your product. I like the idea of "accessible hours" as a defined job role that isn't also considered required overtime. Nice share. The important stuff should be a mini- manifesto list for any brand/company/individual marketing to this generation. I would bet those numbers even bleed a little into the Gen X and Millenials groups some. Marketers that adopt all the potential platforms and multimedia being consumed by this Gen Y group, and that tailor their PR efforts towards that (http://tinyurl.com/b22srs) will find much success, even in this depressed economic market.
Thanks again Scott for something worth talking about.

Re: Online Video Advertising: State Of The Internet Marketing Industry Full Report Q4 2008

Nice piece and excellent report from LiveRail about Online Video Advertising!
While everyone scrambles to find the "happy mix" between ad content and video content for their sites, the industry itself will weed those models that don't provide the best sense for marketing budgets and the agencies that are working them. In the meantime, businesses and their consumers will be taking a front spot in the production of many of the more popular brand messages this year, given the ease with which they can activate their word of mouth through online video, broadband access and social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

I am launching my own Video Advertising site right now, called MeHype.com, which will feature User-Generated Videos that have been specifically created for Advertisers that post their Creative Briefs on our site. Through our model, these Consumer Video Producers can earn cash for the total views that their videos receive during the promotional period, while Corporate Sponsors (advertisers) receive thousands of brand advocates creating new, fresh content about their products and services. It is Virtual Word of Mouth in action. The site is in Beta now, but should be hosting our first projects soon! Would love to hear everyone's opinion of Online Video Advertising for this year, as well as our concept... comment to this blog!

Re: How You Can Use Social Media to Help the U.S. Auto Industry

Scott,

Excellent position piece on your company. I couldn't think of a more effective use of your voice, being both a "Company Man" and also "Social Media Guru" to share two sides of an amazing story. Ford is one of those iconic brands that has eclipsed the simple "industry" classification to come to represent all things that are great about being American - strength of character, powerful mindset to challenge those things that are unjust (high gas, unsafe environmental practices, etc.) and the perseverance to withstand countless challenges from foreign forces. While I have only owned one Ford personally, I have always found their company to be an excellent model of what we all should do to be successful, even in unsuccessful times. Thanks for sharing the additional information about Ford's efforts and plans, you have solidified my opinion of your company, and while I am only one man, I will be sure to spread the word. Keep it up and Good luck!

Re: Young and (Un)Impressionable

Laurent,

When you say that the environment is now ready for the coming change of system to personal engagement, what do you mean by that? Is it that there now exists, through the pervasiveness of social networking sites such as facebook, twitter, etc. that we can 'handle" the conversations, or that because of the overall change in the mindset of the final consumer, that we just dont listen to/or flat out ignore traditional media sources (TV, radio, print, etc.)? Can you give some examples of places you think we are heading as marketers adopt new technology and mediums?

How can we engage the consumer to direct the company to engage the consumer to make a purchase of anything? ideas?

Re: What's Greater Than Sex?

Wonderful post. The statistics are not that surprising, since I fit into the main categories (not the flabby traveling tree-hugger one).
