Even if you discard the claims of cancer deaths, it's abundantly clear that the local communities were affected by seismic activity, air pollution, and water contamination caused by Texaco's equipment and employees. It's beyond doubt that waste pools near people's homes were poorly designed and overflowed every time it rained there. They never could have gotten away with what they did in the United States. Chevron's claim that the Ecuadorean gov't owned 62% of the consortium is irrelevant. Texaco owned 100% of the equipment and the decisions on how and where to drill were made in Coral Gables, Florida, not Quito.

Re: Nishi Hongwanji in the rain

HA! I saw that picture too. I also saw a video of people in a bar in Wasila cheering her on. No offense but... Alaska is kind of tarded sometimes (and no, I won't be sensitive just because she has a "special needs" child.)

All of the historical sites in your blog look a LOT better cared for than the ones I saw in China (or Latin America, for that matter).

Re: Arashiyama and Kyodai

Hey! I thought I subscribed to your blog, but I guess it didn't work. That pic of the path through the gate going up through the mountains is SO COOL.

Shinto is pretty eclectic, right? I could be completely wrong (not an Asiaphile), but I thought it was basically a bunch of indigenous nature religions put into one system, kind of like the ancient Roman religion.
