In any case, this is a debate that researchers have been arguing for years, I doubt we can resolve it in a comment forum. Have a good one.

Re: Mid-Missouri Mormons celebrate religious freedom with walk, run

I stand corrected on those grounds then. I'll have to look at the books referenced. However, none of those accounts you give mention pre/extra-marital relations as your previous comment suggests. Each of the women you present were married to him.

My statement of dynastic marriages still applies in regard to some of his wives, notably in relation to youngest ones you mention.

Look, your argument is starting to descend into the level of "polygamy bad" and you know I'm going to bring up examples of Abraham and the law of Moses as past precedent. Are you going anywhere else with this or can we call it quits here? We both agree that he practiced polygamy. We both disagree on whether it was correctly practiced. This is turning into a battle of opinion.

Re: Mid-Missouri Mormons celebrate religious freedom with walk, run

Okay, for a woman who wants a healthy marriage, what would you have recommended Eleanor McLean do? By your account, she had no recourse but to die alone and married to a man that mistreated her. That's wrong, and that's why we now have laws that allow women to escape situations such as hers. As far as I am concerned, in her situation, her then husband violated and invalidated his marriage vows when he began beating her. She did everything in her power to end the marriage and as such morality is satisfied.

Additionally, while Joseph Smith did marry several women, it's hard to find any evidence that there were sexual relations in those marriages. Historians (both in and outside the LDS church) believe that most of his marriages were dynastic marriages (marriages made to secure family ties & loyalties). In fact, researchers have concluded that the motivations for polygamy had little to do with sex. I recommend looking at B. Carmon Hardy's "Solemn Covenant: THE MORMON POLYGAMOUS PASSAGE" for a good look at the environment of the time. It was certainly nothing like the craziness the FLDS are perpetrating.

Re: Mid-Missouri Mormons celebrate religious freedom with walk, run

Are you suggesting that a marriage where the husband beats the wife and subsequently forces her to stay married to him against her wishes should stay valid? Even after she did all that she could to secure a divorce? This is a man that, when she was singing a hymn, beat her and threw her out of his house and locked her out. Are you saying she should've gone back to that?

Re: Mid-Missouri Mormons celebrate religious freedom with walk, run

You mean the woman who ran away from her abusive husband who abused her both mentally and physically? People of other faiths don't need your proxy baptisms."
And that's the real point here isn't it? Mormons (myself included) believe themselves to be members of Jesus Christ's one true church, the only one with the holy priesthood that can provide saving ordinances to mankind. We also believe that every human being is a child of God and that God is a fair god and wouldn't want any of his children to miss the opportunity to accept his Son's sacrifice.
Other people, such as yourself, take offence to this belief and want to do every thing in their power to crush those that hold it.
How about a truce. I'll continue to believe that everyone--including yourself--is going to a heaven of some kind or another, and you can continue to believe that I'm going to burn in Satan's pit.

Re: LDS Church blocks whistle-blower’s access to proxy baptism data

Using this logic, I suppose my father's cardiologist needs to seek permission from his children and grandchildren to provide consultation on life saving procedures. I guess I need to call my sister in Utah and ask her permission before sending Grandma her Christmas present as well.

sigh...

Re: LDS Church blocks whistle-blower’s access to proxy baptism data

Or how about my great-great grandmother? It's not like I'm forcibly converting them to Mormonism. I'm offering them a chance to have something they weren't able to obtain in their lives. They are free to accept or reject the ordinance on their own.

Anyone who does say baptism for the dead is forced conversion is either a sensationalist trying to stir up trouble or misinformed. In any case, it has always been the church's policy for members to to submit only the names of their ancestors and no more. Those who search out Holocaust victims and celebrities are deliberately going against church policy and this article points out that they are enforcing stricter rules to stop it.

EDIT: spelling: day->say

Re: LDS Church blocks whistle-blower’s access to proxy baptism data

The important thing is that the work is done, not in whose work is done first. If some people must wait for Christ's personal reign upon the earth because it would otherwise hinder spreading his word to those that are living now, I don't think they would mind. If I were dead, I wouldn't mind waiting if it meant that my descendants would not hate the church and its message of Christ and possible accept his gospel.

Now if this limitation meant that the work would never be performed, then I could see the issue, but it doesn't.

Re: LDS Church blocks whistle-blower’s access to proxy baptism data

Mormons believe that anyone who hasn't had their ordinances performed yet will have them done before they are resurrected during Christ's thousand year reign. The Church policy of limiting baptisms to family members only is a way to avoid offence to others.

I would like to point out though, as others have before, that the Mormon church does not count the dead who have had baptisms performed for them as converts to the church. Baptism for the dead is merely an invitation to come to Christ, which the person is free to accept or reject as they so desire. The only people who see baptism for the dead as forced conversion are sensationalists and the misinformed.

Re: LDS Church blocks whistle-blower’s access to proxy baptism data

Surely this is the outcome she wanted? People who regularly search for names that aren't to be submitted are locked out of the system. It's not like the church was targeting her specifically since she was using someone else's account.
