Nauseating, just nauseating.

Coupe Deval didn’t get his casinos, so is looking for yet another way to wring more out of the citizens and businesses of the Commonwealth. Lawd forbid they should look for ways to DECREASE spending.

Per the Tax Foundation, MA is ranked 46th for corporate tax index rate; 49th for unemployment insurance; and 45th for property taxes.

Per a number of other sources, MA has the fourth highest corporate tax rate in the nation.

Brilliant, just brilliant, jacking taxes in these economic times.

The income tax repeal is looking better and better. Let us not forget, the last time this idea reared its head, 45 percent voted in favor of it.

Oh, that’s right! We’re in MA! The legislature never lets little things like referendums bother them! They just keep on movin’ on down the line…

Powers & Sullivan is the same audit firm mentioned on Salem's site re: school budget FAQ's. And we know what happened there.

The lack of timeliness of the audit could be for a number of reasons; but if I lived in Beverly (and likewise, Salem, which I do), this situation wouldn't give me the warm fuzzies.

What about the young woman on ch. 5, who said she saw flames start up a gas pipe? And the workmen running, said, run, lady, it's gonna blow? Delusional?

I also don't understand how they could find "the original cigarette" at the bottom of a mulch pile. Wouldn't the mulch pile fire have made that difficult?

Additionally, if a mulch pile gets hot enough, it will combust on its own.

This isn't making sense...

Yes, thank heaven for favors. It could have been a lot worse; but it was sheer luck that this didn’t happen in the middle of the night. And that doesn’t ameliorate that fact that so many lost everything, including pets.

First, it was a cigarette at the bottom of a mulch pile. Now, it’s on top. The article in the Globe re: gas leak didn’t come out until Saturday, after much skepticism was voiced.

So now, we have a gas leak. Comments from the first article, here:

Speeking of the smell of gas. Has anyone ever notice the smell of gas in that area while driving on 128? I have smelled it lots of times.

I absolutely have! I even called KeySpan about a year ago when I smelled it quite strongly on the ramp from Route 1 North to 128 North.

So – if it was a gas leak, it points to either “the gas company”, at some point, if they ever serviced that line; OR whoever signed off on the inspection for occupancy. Now, who could that be??? And for whom were they working? Could it beeeee… the city?

I’ve lived in Salem off and on (mostly on) for the last thirty five years. As I type, I have lived one house back from Derby St, by the Gables, for the last seventeen years.

I mean really, how long does it take for a bike to pass? Five seconds? Or, five of them. Ten seconds?

It has ever been thus. I agree with the posters who wrote, 1) move, if you can’t deal with urban living, and/or 2) get a life.

Yes, get the whaaaambulance, too, for the poor soul who had to sit in traffic for thirty minutes. That run makes huge money for charity. And, maybe you should pay attention to what goes on around town more, especially in October.

BTW, there are usually fireworks on the Fourth. Do your errands early, hunker down, close the doors and windows, and wait it out.

As for the spelling police – Albert Einstein couldn’t spell. Who cares.

I wish someone had jumped on RCG, before they put that concrete box on top of Salem Laundry. When I heard that they'd taken out options on all those downtown buildings, I was afraid. Very afraid.

Losing a ramp to the courthouse project sounds like another nightmare waiting to happen.

Being that it’s local to me – I really just can’t wait for a light at Derby St and Congress. This is apparently an intersection with a very low accident rate. However! The poor wittle nannies get nervous, trying to negotiate it.

How about going back to driving school, instead of making the rest of the populace suffer for lack of other’s driving skills? BTW, I walk, and cross that intersection frequently with no problems.

Kind of scary, that there's no one currently employed by the city that can analyze budgets? I'm just sayin'...

Additionally, the auditors should have caught the budget mess long ago. Per the audit letter re: this, there was "a deliberate pattern of fraudulent financial reporting for fiscal years 2006, 2007, and 2008".

Expenses for the 'current' year were being pushed into the next year. Someone wasn't paying attention to invoice dates during the audits, nor were they sampling these properly.

And re: lowering gas taxes, right about that. Heaven forbid. Keep those bucks and pennies rollin’ in, we needs it for all our “entitlement” programs. The rest of you, just keep on working, and forking it over.

Besides, if the prices stay high, the Dem’s can rush to the rescue this winter with ‘fuel assistance’. At this rate, that might pay for a half tank of oil, instead of a full one. Big whoop.

Re: ethanol, it apparently isn’t the magic bullet it was thought to be, if using corn. Cost to produce (and yes, that would include the energy costs) and environmental impact are suspect. (Oh, noooo! Not environmental impact!) Sugar could be a solution.

BTW – if you think food prices are high now, wait until the full impact of the Midwest flooding hits, on top of energy prices. On an internet forum in Iowa, there was contemplation of slaughtering of animals before they ever get to market, because of anticipated costs. It will probably get worse, before it gets better. If it gets better.
