Since that time, they've considerably lowered the interest rate, to the point where I can get a higher rate from Fidelity on a 3-month CD. Guess where my money's at now?

But your case is classic - you can get checks these days for $10 for a 2 year supply. Pure profit for the bank for that 'option'. If you know someone on a fixed income (parents) that haven't looked at their account features lately, might be worth prompting them to do the same.

Re: The Format War: Notes from a Sinking Ship

That's my line of thinking. As fiber expands, and storage prices continue to drop, I don't see the value in purchasing media to gather dust.

Re: Why the iPhone

uudecode? Showing your age there!

Seriously though, in this age where wifi is ubiquitous, and I'm already paying to have internet at home, the $20/month is $240/yr that you can do other things with. Is there really $20/month worth of network access someone needs between the places where a wifi-enabled laptop can't reach? Looking up movies in the car? There's VRU's that do that. Checking the weather? Look outside. Sure, you're not always going to have a laptop, but an iphone is a not a replacement for it. And is it not worthwhile to spend a few moments off the grid? I don't yet see much beyond the sex appeal of the device.

[Sidenote: please don't become another aapl fanboy blog.]
