Thought it might be fun to play a parlay on that. Took Eastern Washington, Villanova and Delaware on the darn thing. I know I won it cause they paid me the money. Played $40 and won $240. I figured they wouldn't be fixin' any of those games since there wouldn't be enough money on them to make it worth their while. Nevertheless, the only score I really caught was Villanova's - and they really smoked somebody (can't even remember who they played - like it mattered). I think I'll play them again if they show up on the board this week. Heck, if the win that Championship - they might just come in and dominate in the Big Least.

Re: TCU accepts offer to join Big East

Zac:

Well that sissie thing really did get a rise out of you - that's good. You know - I just keep thinking that Pitt is gonna do what they are supposed to one of these years. It just never happens. My thinking is usually geared around what was supposed to be the best team from a conference. Pitt flopped horribly again. Therefore, in my mind, the whole conference flopped. The Big East has had good years - just not this time. Cincy was great last year - lost their coach. West Virginia was great - lost their coach. Rutgers had it going on for awhile. I see South Florida eventually becoming a premier team with Holtz there. There is hope.

No banter from me because my team blows. It's not just that the conference is improving every year. It's that they got the wrong guy for the job. I bagged Michigan for awhile now about Rodriguez - that it wasn't gonna fly in the Big 10. Now, our guy is in the same predicament. The Pac-10 is not the NFL. The Tampa 2 defense isn't gonna work here. Wide receiver screens are not gonna work here. Power football and throwing the ball down the field is what is gonna win games in the PAC. Imagine, you got wideout Ronald Johnson and Robert Woods, QB Matt Barkley, and you throw nothing but WR screens. Both wideouts are averaging 12 yards or less per catch? What is that? The bruising RB Bradford is averaging over 6 per carry but never gets to play? Come on! No, don't get me started on my Trojans. I'd keep Ed Orgeron and fire everybody else. I am very dissappointed in the coaching staff - to say the most. I can't believe that we have become this kinda sissy team in just two short years. What a disgrace! I think that Pat Haden will solve this problem soon, though.

Re: College Football Polls - Week of 11/21/10

BB:

Well, there is no argument that the Wiscy's have the biggest, strongest and best offensive linemen in the game over the last several years. Also, you boyz have some pretty good RB's and usually a pretty good wideout and TE to go along with that. But, you never have a really great QB. Can't remember if you've ever had one. You've had some good ones - but none that were really premier. As for team speed - Wisconsin doesn't have any. Clay might even be the slowest RB in the country - powerful but slow.

Now, Oregon and Stanford are quite a step up from Northwestern - really! Oregon's average scoring drive is less than two minutes. This means that the offense sits on the bench most of the game anyway. Wisconsin's powerful running game will have no effect, except to keep Oregon's offense even more refreshed, thus enabling Oregon to score points in even more of a hurry. Also, Oregon runs a perpetual hurry-up offense, totally geared to draining the stamina out of defenses - especially ones like Wisconsin has. Beating Ohio State can and has been done. Losing to Michigan State isn't that great of an accomplishment. Ohio State did beat Oregon last year - so who knows? Wisconsin does not have the kinda QB that Ohio State has though. My guess is that Oregon would, in fact, wear Wisconsin down - rather than the other way around. Oregon's defense is big and brutal BTW. They don't run the same defense as they do the offense. The defense is big and strong at the DL and LB positions. This would be the most even aspect of the game. I really can't see Wisconsin rollin' 70 on Oregon - but I could see Oregon puttin' 50 on Wisconsin - easy.

Re: College Football Polls - Week of 11/21/10

RollTide_73:

Two of my best buds out here in Cali are from Bama and they roll with the Tide always. I've had to talk them off that ledge three different times this year. Thankfully, they haven't stretched their necks just yet. Yes, the SEC West is by far the strongest division in the game. I've been winning money with Mississippi State all dayum year. I admire your "homerism", but I can't understand at all, why you would want Auburn to win anything. Believe you me - I would root for any team to beat UCLA under any circumstance. We recruit against those guys - so I want them to lose every game for sure. We have a similar conference out here - I know you guys don't think so. But, if a team goes unbeaten in the PAC, that is a really dominant team. It'll be the most interesting game we've had in some time for sure. Oregon vs Auburn. May the best team win.

Re: TCU accepts offer to join Big East

shiguy:

Well, worst of the BCS Conferences anyway. Can't really understand why kids from Texas would want to play half their games clear across the country. That's why it is so hard to recruit nationally. Mom and Dad won't be able to travel to many of those games. That is a major consideration in where your gonna play ball at. Most of those kids at TCU could have played in the Big 12 anyway. It wasn't really a matter of did any BCS schools want them - they just liked TCU in Texas. Maybe that will remain the same. But, I would just assume that Texas kids would want to continue some of the rivalries that they have had with other kids from their geographic locations. That won't be able to happen if they join a Big East conference shool. My guess is that they somehow miss out on some recruits.

Re: College Football Polls - Week of 11/21/10

Did you really think they were gonna let Boise State get a chance to play for the National Championship? No chance! It wasn't surprising at all that Auburn, just magically, came back from that kinda serious rump pounding. And, they even rewarded the Aubbies for coming as close to losing as possible, with jumping Oregon (who looked unbeatable) for the Top Spot. Also, mysteriously, Boise State was beaten later on in the night by Nevada. Why? Probably just in case South Carolina can beat Auburn in the SEC Championship game. But, no matter what the Gamecocks do, I don't think they'll ever let that happen.

I'm not complaining. I've been whinin' for that Pac10/SEC Bowl game for a long time now. There hasn't been one since the inception of the BCS. You'll get your laugh when Oregon spanks that Auburn team worse than any SEC team ever beat a Big 10 team. Can't wait for the day.

Re: College Football Polls - Week of 11/21/10

I think you better hope that you don't have to play Stanford in the Rose Bowl. TCU could be pretty rough on the run also. And, on a more serious side, how in the world would you suppose that a traditionally slow plodding Wisconsin team could possibly slow down Oregon? Just wondering....

Re: TCU accepts offer to join Big East

Zac, but Villanova more than TCU, really is what the Big Least needs. TCU is really just scared to have to play Boise every year. Villanova will allow every team in the Conference to pick up an extra victory - maybe... What a totally pathetic move by the Least! Villanova... man O' man... And what kid from Texas is gonna want to enlist at TCU - knowing that he's only gonna get to play against a bunch of sissies from the weakest conference in the country. Another great break for Texas and all members of the Big 12. A terrible decision for TCU. They won't be there for long. And, if they are, they'll get even less respect than Boise has received over the last several years.

Re: Tennessee Got SCREWED!

This is college football. None of this is really real. After Alabama gets done mauling Florida - we need another epic football game. They simply cannot let LSU lose to Tennessee. That would spoil the LSU-Auburn matchup for who gets to get pounded later on by Bama. Whomever it is - they need to be unbeaten to bring in those ratings. LSU will eventually get to lose - but not until they play Auburn or Alabama. You don't get to lose to just anybody unless your Southern Cal. But, that takes hard work and you have to win about seven straight conference championships, before your own conference decides that they don't want you to be able to win anymore. This will even happen to Alabama in the not-so-distant future. But not now. They are the hottest game in town and need to have servicable victims. LSU fits that bill.

Re: Week Two College Football Polls 2010

Mr2Bits:

I thought I was the only one still stupid enough to bet the Trojans. I thought they lay off all of the holding this week and let them get one. No way! Last week it was letting Virginia score with four seconds left - and this week they let the Ghoofs get one with 10 seconds to go. Love that prevent defense - never works every single time. Yeh, this is Black Saturday. I mentioned it already. Vegas got hammered last week. Not this time. Some of this stuff is absolutely ridiculous this week.

Virginia Tech coming back to beat the spread on ECU
Colorado all of a sudden comes back with 31 2nd 1/2 pts on Hawaii
Troy State giving all of it away in the 4th to UAB and even losing?
California getting bombed at Nevada last night
Navy is losing to La Tech - say what?
Toledo clobbering Western Michigan
Air Force only loses by three in Norman
BYU completely tanks at FSU

It's goin' on all day long - and it isn't any coincidence. Have you noticed all of the extremely bad calls and non-calls today? I watched a Florida guy hit the Tenn QB seven yards out of bounds late in the game. No call. Really blasted him too. Why? To keep that 14 point game. Everybody loses then.

Re: Week Two College Football Polls 2010

USC1801:

It is early, and there really isn't much yardstick to measure with yet, but that is when you just have to know what your looking at. Maybe Mallett - but I can't think of anybody else. Harline? Is he still playing? Florida can only hand it to Demps. Bama is just gonna pound it up your culo. LSU might try some passes - maybe. Houston Nutt with Masoli - doubt it? Now which of these six, besides Air Force, is ever going to beat anybody? And, please, you don't get to count Washington State as somebody.

Re: Week Two College Football Polls 2010

USC1801:

Uh, didn't Georgia score 55 in the prior weeks game? Didn't they get a whopping three against the Roosters? Yards don't count. Yards come against young players. As they mature and get better yards go down. At least that's what is supposed to happen.

Re: Week Two College Football Polls 2010

GRC:

Now that sounds like some pretty wishful thinking. Let me know how that turns out for you?

Really, the Bucks are much improved because of the mobility of the QB. The guy is improving by leaps and bounds all the time. By the end of this year he could look very much like Vince Young. It is hard to get ahold of a guy like that. Those are the guys that just give us fits. We play a pro style defense (recruiting tool) and try to pin a guy in the pocket, which enables us to play a man defense, and then go for the Int's. That never works when a guy gets outside the containment. And then, the man coverage completely breaks down, and we look absolutely terrible.

This can happen to anybody that plays that kinda defense. Alabama plays that kinda defense. Utah's Johnson got outside that containment and the receivers were wide open like all dayum day. There are not any teams in the SEC that have had a QB with that kinda speed (Tim Tebow was not that kinda crazy fast). This could present a unique situation for Saban and his staff. Don't count yourself too short.

Re: Week Two College Football Polls 2010

AxAngel:

It is not likely that Oregon will go unbeaten. They haven't exactly reached the level that Southern Cal had over the last few years (we've won every bowl game and seven straight Pac titles) and still managed to take at least one conference loss in most years. The Pac-10 is way too strong to assume that anybody can go unbeaten.

Likewise for Alabama. Even though they are the best team in the country - they have only suffered one conference loss in the last two years and counting. That is very abnormal for the SEC. With the emerging South Carolina coming, along with all of the other good teams in that conference, there is nothing to prevent a bad Saturday (some extra fumbles and Int's) from derailing Bama's quest for another unbeaten season.

You left out Oklahoma from the Big-12. With Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech in that conference - it's hard to assume that anybody gets out of there unbeaten this time. Especially since Texas and Oklahoma have lost tremendous QB's. Oklahoma would have the better chance of recovering from this (i.e., Landry Jones) - but I like the Rams chances of winning the Super Bowl better.

Ohio State is no show-in either. Although they are also a great team - Iowa can play them tough. Michigan could exploit something possibly - but the QB Robinson may not survive that long. Penn State, Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan could drop anybody at anytime. Ohio State does have a good shot though.

Boise is famous for scheduling one decent (not great) game each year. They never fully step up to the plate. Everybody gets all excited that they played Virginia Tech - so what? Tech is not a traditional Top 5 team. On occasion they have had some real good teams - but they are more likely to end up ranked around 15th most of the time. That is about a common opponent in most of the tougher BCS conferences. Like Nick Saban said, "He'll normally play at least 6-7 games of that caliber per year". Boise will go unbeaten.

And so will Utah or T.C.U. - whoever wins that sorry-azz conference. Likewise TCU steps up to play Oregon State (just as Utah had) and everybody proclaims they are definately a Top 5 team. What? Oregon State is always about 4th or 5th out here. They are not like your really trying to bite off a piece of the Pac-10. The only team that ever really wants a piece of that seems to be Tennessee. Gluttons for punishment.

The Travesty is gonna be when Boise State plays either TCU or Utah for the National Championship. That'll be the day that we all need to change sports to table tennis or something.

Re: Week Two College Football Polls 2010

Mr. Mayor,

Well, you can certainly check that baggage at the door. The Ducks (notice that they are no longer referred to as "The Quacks"?) are ready to move to the next level.

I was worried about that Tennessee game - but the Ducks won a parlay card for me. We'll reverse roles now and I'll state that U.S.C. will be the largest underdog that they have been in many many years here in a few weeks. Things have certainly changed. Now, I mostly always bet on the Ducks and always bet against the Trojans. Fattens my wallet but completely deflates my self-esteem. Although they are a very fine football program, I do believe that the blue field, was an unfair gimmick that was imposed back in the day they weren't all that great. As long as they play on that field I'll never have any respect for them. Now, that is something that the NCAA should have outlawed.

I was gonna mention that the 2nd toughest game was Oregon when they wore those solid green unis. But, I don't think that Oregon ever did anything to deliberately gain an edge in a game. I just think that most football players that attend Oregon are fashion orientated, and will probably end up in that industry, rather than the NFL.

Re: Week Two College Football Polls 2010

Keats:

Like I said: I think that the Casino guys got hit hard last week. That's because they let you get some early to feed that monkey. By the 5th or 6th week everything will start switching up. It always does. The 1st week wasn't as kind to me as the 2nd was and I only finished 8-9-1, but hit a parlay and two good straight bets to come away with five bills anyway, so I've been lucky so far - and that is good. It's not gonna stay that way for long. It does get tougher after awhile.

Sounds like you got this thing figured out better than most. Good luck all season with that.

Re: Week Two College Football Polls 2010

There are alot of pretty funny looking lines this week. I think Vegas got smoked last week. They have a certain way of getting the money back. It's the old saying, "If it looks to good to be true - it probably isn't".

Most of the lines I've looked at seem to be off the LVSC open by around 4-6 points. That is very peculiar. What they do is set you up to overbet on certain teams. The problem lies in the Parlay cards. Straight-up bets can be handled by balancing the money on either side of the ball. Parlay cards are all printed up on Thursday's and passed out on Saturday morning. The lines on the cards are from Thursday. So, suppose that on Saturday morning, way too many people have put money on Oregon, Florida and Texas plus about six other teams. Guess who mysteriously loses against the spread? It's about half of the teams that they have coaxed you into taking - not all of them. That would be way too obvious. But, by foolin' with about 8-9 games per week - they can wipe out thousands and thousands of parlay cards.

The trick in playing these things is to stay away from the "popular" teams or high "profile" teams. They will get hit. People love to bet Notre Dame, Southern Cal, Oregon and any other "hot" team at the moment. I win money by placing bets on Sunbelt, WAC, MWC, MAC and ConfUSA teams. East Carolina has been a big winner for me along with Idaho and Rice and any team like that. The reason is that there isn't any money on those kinda games. I'm not saying that any of these games are fixed or anything, but....?

Re: Sunday Quick Hits: Escape and Advance Edition

I'll have to admit that one of the hardest things I have had to do in my life is to play Boise on that Blue Field on my Playstation 2. You cannot even see the defensive backs when you drop back to pass. The only way around it all is to make it snow.

Re: Utah to the PAC 10

Ben,

I think Utah was a great add for the 12-Pac. Colorado sucks. They'll contend with Washington State to see who can go the longest without beating another conference opponent. That was a sad add. Colorado was better off in the Big 12-2. At least they could steal a won over K-State, Iowa St., or Baylor once in awhile. They'll never even beat Arizona State in the 12-Pac. They might be able to handle the mighty Cougs.

Utah will do fine in the Pac. They'll have to get ready for that though. A five year window sounds reasonable to me. The reason that I like Utah is the amount of Tongan and Samoan players that they are recruiting. This makes them just downright physical - and that is what it is gonna take. Afterall, it was that kinda ferocious play that last beat Bama. I expect for them to take a place in the Top 5 immediately and go on from there. I also expect for them to lose games on occasion - everybody else does. The days of winning 12 or 13 games are gonna be long gone. But, 10 win seasons could become a reality. I don't think they're gonna outrecuit anybody from Los Angeles though. What kid in their right mind would want to spend 4-5 years in Utah?

Re: Week Two College Football Polls 2010

UofSC,

I hit 18 out of 20 parlay picks last week. Hit 2 for 4 on three teamers and 2 for 2 on four teamers. Made some real coin. But, that was a real lucky week. Fact is: I'd have to see that line. Nevertheless, I'm not real impressed with Florida right now. Same goes for Texas. Those two lost great QB's. Demps will not run wild on South Carolina.

The Mayor up there in Oregon was always bad-mouthin' his team. I kept telling him that they're coming. That was over the last four years or so. He thought they'd never beat Southern Cal. It would be an upset today if SC beat Oregon.

Blogical and all those Buck fans were all ready to commit suicide a couple of years back. I had to be called in for many a "suicide prevention intervention". Today, those guys finally understand what I was talkin' about. The Bucks really are back.

One great rule of betting football games: believe what you are seeing! I have never liked South Carolina football much. But, I like this team. They look tough and play tough. Attitude is everything.

Re: Week Two College Football Polls 2010

What? After pounding FSU like that - your gonna count them as a "ranked team"? You got to be kidding. I suppose that Utah State should be ranked in the Top Ten somewhere.

Re: Week Two College Football Polls 2010

Wrong! This guy took advantage of two fledgling agents, who were trying to get into the big time (just like any of the others), and soaked them for money to keep his family living large for a couple of years - and then didn't even have the good grace to pay back what he took. This has been going on for a long time. Like any good ol' boy system. Players take advances on the money they'll get outta Pro ball all dayum day long. This is the first player who ever didn't pay back what he owed. That is why those were the first agents to ever go squeelin' to the NCAA. Vince Young deserved the Heisman in that year anyway. They ought to posthumously grant him the award. Then all will finally be right in the universe.
