Both are pretty fantastic (and were unexpected); it was essentially a coin-flip decision in terms of which one was included. (I have WHISTLEJACKET and ADVENTURES IN THE ALASKAN SKIN TRADE on my to-read shelf at home.)

I find that my reaction to his books varies more disparately from work to work than for -- for lack of a better phrase -- other authors of a similar stature: I admired SECOND SKIN more than I enjoyed it, but the emotions/evocations summoned up by TRAVESTY are still rattling around my head almost a year after I read it.

Maybe this is just a function of reading the books I've read in the order that I've read them, but I get a sense of him essentially reinventing himself with each book. That's part of what keeps me interested in revisiting him, even when the work itself might leave me (in places) cold...

Re: http://bookavore.tumblr.com/post/3844800308

Finished it last night, and....I'm totally at a loss as to points of comparison. Maybe the closest comparison, in terms of linguistic experimentation and narrative structure, might be PALE FIRE*, but the two books are otherwise wildly disparate in tone.

I'd say that bits of its influence have shown up in other books I've read over the years -- Amis's THE INFORMATION and some of George Saunders's more surreal stories come to mind. I'd also be willing to bet -- and this is admittedly going outside of the realm of the novel proper here -- that O'Brien's novel has had some influence on Chris Onstadt.

(I will second the THE THIRD POLICEMAN recommendation as well. Terrific and weird and funny and sinister.)

*-which could be taken with a grain of salt, as it's been a decade since I read the aforementioned Nabokov novel.

Re: AttN: NeW YoRK: ThErE iS nO yEAR

FB invite for the WORD event on 3/9:
http://www.facebook.com/eve...

And for the Center for Fiction event on 3/10:
http://www.facebook.com/eve...

Re: Three Cheers for Lady Writers of 2010

Not to mention the "5 under 35" nominees: http://www.nationalbook.org...

Re: Five Preoccupations of the New Guy

Welcome!
