At the time, DC Fontana and David Gerrold (both closely associated with TAS) were in litigation with Roddenberry over TNG. It makes legal sense to distance their importance during a battle over co-creatorship. Larry Niven (creator of the kzin) was trying to sell the rights to "Ringworld" as a RPG. A semi-licensed "Star Fleet Battles" RPG (licensed from Franz Joseph) was using TAS aliens and kzinti, and Franz Joseph ship designs from his "Starfleet Technical Manual", and neither Roddenberry not Paramount could stop them. Arex and M'Ress were appearing in the post-ST IV comic and Caitians in the FASA RPG materials. Both of these uses caused consternation to Richard Arnold, who was vetting tie-ins for Roddenberry.

By decanonizing TAS during the hiatus between TNG seasons 1 and 2, it made it clear to TNG's writers to leave TAS alone for the time being. The 22 episodes were not even playing on TV at the time, so new fans of TNG couldn't readily see them anyway. DC Comics returned from hiatus with an adaptation of ST V, with Arex and M'Ress likenesses in the new ongoing storyline replaced by original characters, Ensign Fouton and Lieutenant M'yra. (M'yra was now romancing Sulu, just as M'Ress had been.) After Roddenberry passed away, Jeri Taylor's novelization of "Unification" (TNG) came out and she made references to the Phylosians, indicating that TAS references were back. (But too late for the "Star Trek Chronology" and "Encyclopedia", in which the Okudas explained they had been asked by Roddenberry to ignore TAS except for references to Robert April and Spock's childhood.) The official Star Trek website's online concordance added TAS elements to coincide with the re-release of TAS on DVD. TAS was back in canon.

Re: Batman Classic 1966 TV Series Batgirl Bust Bank - Diamond Select - Batman - Banks at EE Distribution

Oh no!

I saw this on preorder from three Italian sellers on eBay last night and decided to ensure my local Australian comic store had one on order for me from Diamond USA. The colour correction story happened well before the footage was shot of Susan Oliver playing Vina in "The Cage".

Re: Star Trek and the Problem With B-4 and After 2379

I guess you aren't following the licensed tie-in comics and (bestselling) novels, which have continued the 24th Century way beyond "Nemesis".

Re: Koenig Humbled By Trek

Then reporters should stop asking him about the feud, because if Takei (or Shatner) answers "No comment", people will read into that answer anyway.

Re: Star Trek 3 Could Add Bryan Cranston As The Most Epic Villain Ever

The Andorians weren't villains in TOS, although an Orion assassin disguised himself as one.

Re: Abrams Hides Star Trek 2 Set

"He didn't tell you how Admiral Kirk sent seventy of us into exile on this barren sand heap with only the contents of these cargo bays to sustain us?"

Re: Miley Cyrus Rumored For Batgirl

"... a long history of crappy portrayals (hello Alicia Silverstone)..."

Huh?
