Honestly, there are better targets for attention than beer billboards, but that might require actual work. It's easier to get headlines by finding a soapbox and shouting, "Bad stuff should be gone!" If anything at all comes of this, I'll be the first to come back here and post my apology.

I did not accuse the Mayor of sponsoring religion on behalf of the government, although it would be wise to make sure that certain faiths are not excluded from his "roundtables". The problem is that his "programs" and "task forces" will do nothing for the city of Detroit. I have not called the Mayor "evil", just self-serving. You are right - he is selling them something no one else wants. But the churches will not be paying property taxes, and they won't even pay sales tax on the purchase. Like I said, doing nothing for the city. I will admit that an active recreation center is better than another abandoned building infested with addicts and pushers. But will the city benefit from having some government-sponsored, church-owned, tax-exempt businesses? Well, if religion is what Detroit needs to recover, the thousands of churches already here would have turned it into paradise.

The Mayor is doing something that benefits himself and his interests, and nothing more. We shouldn't be gullible just because religion is involved.

Well, I feel that everyone has the freedom to believe or not to believe, and I don't mean to say that belief itself is a bad thing. It doesn't have to be. I have friends of several different faiths, and they are good people. My problem is when religious belief replaces actual thinking. Good old-fashioned reason and logic.

If someone pipes up and says that something is good just because there's some connection to a church involved, then I have a problem.

I gave no alternative because the point I've been making is that the Mayor's plan benefits himself far more than it benefits the city, and bringing the religious aspect into it serves to disguise that fact. Yes, a rec center is better than a crack house, but so is an empty lot. If there were proper Police coverage, the empty building wouldn't automatically become a crack house to begin with, but that is another topic.

Also keep in mind that the rec center idea is one of three described in the article. The first, forming new "programs" and "taskforces" to help churches gain access to government services sounds totally unnecessary to me, except as a way to serve his own needs and look good while doing nothing for the city. The second, a quarterly "clergy roundtable" sounds harmless enough (until it becomes a way to exclude specific faiths.)

President Obama's comment was just sticking up for a friend. He's not perfect and neither are his friends. Should he apologize? Rep. McCotter, however, is pandering to the remaining Republicans in a district he barely held on to in the last election. Obviously wasting time on pointless political paperwork gets him in to the spotlight much easier that actually doing his job.
