Conservatives and Liberals both have many examples of hypocrisy. Have there really been no Conservative politicians that have had affairs, misused taxpayer money, or lied to cover something up?
Any time someone says a particular group is exclusively guilty of a moral failing, it just means they aren't paying attention. Yes, I mean you, Antiliberal1.

Re: 'Ask The Councilwoman' Show Continues - Detroit Local News Story - WDIV Detroit

So here's the next car on the crazy train. Why am I not surprised. If the world ran by Monica's logic, I could knock you down in the street and take your money, and as long as I helped you back up, I'm still a good person. I could call myself the President, and that would make me the President. I can admit in court that I broke the law, but you just "perceive" that I'm guilty.
I will say one thing to you, Mrs. Conyers, "God didn't make you junk, you chose to be junk."

Re: Southfield Councilman Charged - Detroit Local News Story - WDIV Detroit

(sarcasm)
Wow, I guess the local news media really does report on crooked politicians outside the border of Detroit. No matter what you do, god will forgive you (which allows you to do despicable things) as long as you ask for forgiveness. Oh, and buy back your innocence when the plate comes around. The only unforgivable sin is to deny god's existence, which would also mean you wouldn't be giving money to the church anymore. And your preacher wouldn't be living in that mansion.

Re: Bing To Announce Faith-Based Programs - Detroit Local News Story - WDIV Detroit

The YMCA was founded in London by George Williams. That would be the YMCA that The Villiage People sang about in the seventies, because it was common knowledge that gay men would gather there to "hook up". That would also be the YMCA that has recently downplayed the "Christian" aspect, and some have even changed their name to just "Y".

Re: Bing To Announce Faith-Based Programs - Detroit Local News Story - WDIV Detroit

I did not accuse the Mayor of sponsoring religion on behalf of the government, although it would be wise to make sure that certain faiths are not excluded from his "roundtables". The problem is that his "programs" and "task forces" will do nothing for the city of Detroit. What they will do is this - provide a way for taxpayer money to flow into the non-taxed coffers of churches, provide a way to divert money and resources to the friends, family and political allies of Dave Bing, provide free publicity for the Mayor come re-election time, and provide a way for the Mayor to look good to the religious voters of Detroit without actually doing anything.

Don't just accept something as good just because it involves religion. That's not "being picky", that's being "intelligent".

Re: Bing To Announce Faith-Based Programs - Detroit Local News Story - WDIV Detroit

I have not called the Mayor "evil", just self-serving. You are right - he is selling them something no one else wants. But the churches will not be paying property taxes, and they won't even pay sales tax on the purchase. Like I said, doing nothing for the city. I will admit that an active recreation center is better than another abandoned building infested with addicts and pushers. But will the city benefit from having some government-sponsored, church-owned, tax-exempt businesses? Well, if religion is what Detroit needs to recover, the thousands of churches already here would have turned it into paradise.

The Mayor is doing something that benefits himself and his interests, and nothing more. We shouldn't be gullible just because religion is involved.

Re: Bing To Announce Faith-Based Programs - Detroit Local News Story - WDIV Detroit

Now that would be a plan worthy of a press conference. It doesn't have to be. I have friends of several different faiths, and they are good people. My problem is when religious belief replaces actual thinking. Good old-fashioned reason and logic.

If someone pipes up and says that something is good just because there's some connection to a church involved, then I have a problem.

Re: Southfield Councilman Charged - Detroit Local News Story - WDIV Detroit

Wow, I'm stunned - you're replying to things I didn't even say. Yes, a rec center is better than a crack house, but so is an empty lot. If there were proper Police coverage, the empty building wouldn't automatically become a crack house to begin with, but that is another topic.

Also keep in mind that the rec center idea is one of three described in the article. The first, forming new "programs" and "taskforces" to help churches gain access to government services sounds totally unnecessary to me, except as a way to serve his own needs and look good while doing nothing for the city. The second, a quarterly "clergy roundtable" sounds harmless enough (until it becomes a way to exclude specific faiths.)

Re: Bing To Announce Faith-Based Programs - Detroit Local News Story - WDIV Detroit

Sounds like you and I would agree all day about this!

Re: Thieves Brag About Crime On Tape - Detroit Local News Story - WDIV Detroit

Oh, don't get me started.
