It gets so backed up at rush hour that people feel panicked if they don't get over immediately. If you miss your chance, merging into that slow 635 exit lane is no fun when everyone behind you and to the right is going as fast as they can.

Re: New Project: Kansas City Vintage Signs

Not sure if anyone mentioned this one at 17th and Broadway http://www.flickr.com/photo...

Re: New Project: Kansas City Vintage Signs

I really like the sign for Heavelin (sp?) I changed my mind several times over the course of the week, thought about the trial even when I wasn't in court, and agonized over the smallest details. We ruled in favor of the defendants, people who I frankly abhor and don't trust, but evidence is evidence, that's why we don't have vigilante justice. Nice story, Peter.

Re: Fat City - Jonathan Bender - Should restaurants actually ban children?

This is not anti-kid sentiment and it's not discrimination. It's the fact that some restaurants are not appropriate places for children because of the way they are naturally predisposed to act. You said it yourself. That doesn't mean kids are bad, just that they have the potential to affect someone else's good time and for that reason a restaurant *may* want to take measures to avoid that. It's amazing and insulting that I can't make a respectful, reasoned argument without defensive parents jumping down my throat and accusing me of being a kid-racist.

Re: Fat City - Jonathan Bender - KC spends the sixth most money on fast food in the country

It would be nice if the image actually got bigger when I clicked on it. Let's just say that the impulse behind racism is much darker, ignorant and scary than wanting a kid-free atmosphere at dinner. Parents need to realize that kids' behavior bothers some people in certain situations, even if they are not "misbehaving."

Re: Fat City - Jonathan Bender - Should restaurants actually ban children?

Agreed, policies like this often exist because owners and employees don't want to deal with a problem. I can count on one hand the number of times I've ever had a problem with kids in restaurants but I don't agree with the discrimination point. If I don't want to participate in the socialization of everyone's children I shouldn't have to.

Re: Fat City - Charles Ferruzza - Joe Accurso sells his namesake restaurant

Invite people over, get some OK Joe's carryout and Gallo Chablis and you're in business.

Re: Fat City - Jonathan Bender - Should restaurants actually ban children?

Restaurants should do whatever they want. While there's plenty of shit out there, the system of checks and balances on the untamed Web sometimes works better than in these content silos. There are plenty of bloggers out there doing way more investigation, analysis and reporting than Penn in this instance. People need to stop fostering this opposition and start identifying good journalism wherever it exists.

Re: Fat City - Jonathan Bender - New 24-hour Perkins Restaurant now open in Independence

24 hours huh? These reviews aren't all that influential but it's hard to convince restaurant owners of that. Also agree that talking back online is very rarely done well, and should probably be handled privately if possible.

Re: Fat City - Jonathan Bender - Can you stake a table out before youve even ordered?

I really don't think that fear of negative reviews causes all these things we complain about regarding restaurants. Sites like Yelp, while not perfect, are pretty good at self-regulating, and have measures in place to minimize the effect of an odd negative review. Yelp gives restaurant owners an opportunity to talk back, privately or publicly to reviewers. Blogs have comment areas where owners can talk back if they want. Other sites don't do it as well, but I think most internet-savvy people take online reviews with a huge grain of salt.

Re: Fat City - Jonathan Bender - Mad Dogs British Pub looking at Overland Park, Shawnee Mission

One day after the 4th of July and we are already cozying up to the Brits?!

Re: Fat City - Jonathan Bender - Can you stake a table out before youve even ordered?

If you have to wait for your food to be delivered, then things get complicated, I hadn't thought about that. At any rate, people with food might be standing there while people with no food are sitting down doing nothing. It's only fair that a busy place should have tables intended for people actually eating. Admittedly this is only an issue at crowded spots like OK Joe's. Most of the time, this never becomes a big problem.

Re: Fat City - Jonathan Bender - Can you stake a table out before youve even ordered?

This is possibly the worst practice in the history of the world.
