Without these two BBS' we would be missing some of the most influential thinkers in social media. You also forgot Slideshare. ICQ was a client for chat; it would a misslabeled to quantify it as a social network.

Re: Generation X Doesn’t Want to Hear It

You rock and thank you!

Re: Controlling PowerPoint Presentations With Kinect

whoa that's cool! I really love the way you summed up the external communication to the brain's internal workings. It is Google! I love the way you can up with your brand!

Re: collision detection: The Age of Awareness: My latest feature for the New York Times Magazine

Was on ECHO from 1989-1996 my handle was mystery - one of Stacy Horn's early recruits...the tool just got easier without the hassle of unix commands. I do miss the face to face meetings at the White Horse Traven.

I wish someone would put the early history into a book so it doesnt get lost. If it wasn't for Stacy Horn teaching me unix in her westvill kitchen I would not be doing what I am doing today in the digital industry.

Re: collision detection: The Age of Awareness: My latest feature for the New York Times Magazine

I love your article because it is reflective of positive acceptance of these social connective tools or as you described ambient tools. I come from the early days of ECHO and WELL in which the communication tools were more difficult making exchanges only to those who understood and could use these tools therefore only certain kinds of people would participate. Now, especially with twitter anyone could participate.

At first I ignored Twitter until I discovered there is validity in these short exchanges with friends. Now I find when I’m traveling for work, I love getting the early morning hellos from friends on Twitter it makes me feel like they are part of my travels. My mother, my boss and clients follow me on Twitter when I travel --- I do travel a lot --- often geo-twittering my whereabouts just incase I get stuck or the plane doesn’t take off on time. Sometimes it’s just nice to know the people around you know where you are.

In Clay Shirky’s book “Here Comes Everybody” he similarly explores the relationship between online societies and off line inaction. He uses economics to explain migration as well as usage and behavioral patterns. The over the next years it will be exciting to see awareness turning into acceptance turning into innate behavior.

Btw I did tweet reading your article on twitter while indulging in biscotti and a latte.

Re: Information Design: How To Format Big Long Lists

Awesome article Robin...though I orginally read your illustation as 100 Hot Singles thought Chris was #1 ----I think of Chris is #1 , but know (no) he's not single.
