I read asymco, but I only understand a small fraction, yet I find it fascinating and I am slowly learning more. At the same time the Critical Path podcasts are easier to understand, in part because of Horace's storytelling style, but also because Dan is such a positive, sincere presence and a great stand-in for listeners who want to learn more.

Re: My visit to Occupy Boston

Chris, I am a long time MOC listener, and I've bought "Marketing White Belt": I know you can be caustic and don't suffer fools gladly. So it was with trepidation that I read the title of this post.
I think you were very even-handed and fair, and even gentle, and I really appreciate it.

Re: How to Balance Freelance Work with Contracting

This is a really helpful post, Georgina, thank you. I actually am in a slightly different situation - I'm working a permanent part time job now, and also working at varying levels with a few WordPress web design clients. Plus I want (need) to take on at least one more design client in October.

I thought that perhaps a bit of my story will be helpful to readers, as well.

So my time adjustment is more or less permanent, because I want to keep doing these things. With that in mind, I'm clearing decks of 'stuck' areas; have hired some help with house duties, and have been gong through a giant 'throw unneeded things out' phase so that I can clear my space to focus on all three big priorities...

I also started using a finance app to at least be more aware of debt and income - not saving yet, but when debt is paid, that's next. For paying projects, I also have some virtual assistance - it means I make less, but I can take some key tasks off my plate, which is crucial.

I am working on my health with some weight and food journaling apps. I started yoga classes which require a real commitment as they're very early morning, but hopefully they'll help me do everything with a bit more energy...

Re downtime- I'm a big audiobook fan as listening to books helps me to feel as if I have actual downtime in between the many busy points of my day. So I take my downtime in daily chunks to stave off feeling overwhelmed...and I put aside one of my two days 'off' to spend the day with my best friend, so she doesn't feel neglected.

These are big changes, and I'm only doing them imperfectly - there are days when I need to crash. But since I know I'm a morning person, I try to schedule intensive work in the morning in small, focused chunks. Sometimes I do some catchup during lunchtime. By the time I get home at night, I'm pretty exhausted, so will only commit to doing very basic, no-brainer stuff, like printing documents. This situation has forced me to reclassify the components of my project work, so I've refined my project management process and gotten more focused.

hope these tips are helpful.

Re: News is a subset of the conversation

interesting discussion. I'm not a journalist or an academic. I'm just a regular working class person, not privileged, in the Western sense, to any great extent.

I know that my attention, and my time, at 53, is limited. So, I want to read news that doesn't waste my time, that talks with me, not to me. I don't care if it's long or short: that's not relevant, as I can read and I love to do so. I care that it's well written, conversational and clear. And if I want to comment, it's nice if there's a place to do so: otherwise, I'll share it with my communities and comment there.

I care that the research I don't have time or expertise to do is done thoroughly, with fairness, and with a bias that is clearly stated (because I think 'unbiased' is nonsense if a human being is writing).

And, finally, I don't care if it comes from Informed Comment, the BBC, the New York Times, Jeff here on BuzzMachine, The Root, TBogg, or any other source for whom I've built up a sense of trust.

For those of you in the rarified airs, perhaps my opinion may be useful. Of course, YMMV:-)

Re: The Longest War - Ta-Nehisi Coates - National - The Atlantic

this is so beautiful, and reminds me of my parents - I chose to be childless, but I cheer on and support those who, like you, want to craft a better world for their kids.

Re: Coverage of Japanese citizens’ ‘stoic’ response to tragedy both accurate, stereotypical

I have lived in Tokyo for the past 14 years. I was peeved enough with Kristof's article to write in the comments that Americans, and other humans, are just as able to respond to disasters with nobility and calm (or rather, I think some of it is shock).

I also noted how many people decided that the reason that there was 'no looting' in Japan and 'looting' during Katrina is that Katrina is filled with black people, and 'you know what those people are like'. That subtext in many comments on Japanese 'stoicism' was what led me to note that there were indeed incidents of 'looting' in Japan without widespread media coverage. And those who insist on Japanese people being somehow different or better seem to have forgotten the incredible tragedy of the 1923 Kanto earthquake, in which thousands of Koreans and Chinese were massacred by Japanese people in ethnic violence. Killed by the same culture that is being lionized today for being 'better' than Americans (or more specifically, black Americans).

I am really glad to see that your article sounds a note of caution about stereotyping, whether positive or negative.

And Dedangelo, frankly, I think you are wrong in saying that 'American' concepts of mental health cannot apply to Japanese people. Because I don't see emotional coping skills and the skill of self-expression as limited to one culture or another, but to the needs of human beings.

Re: Hackerspace Happenings: MAKE Interviews Tokyo’s Akiba

I didn't think I'd enjoy reliving any of this experience, but you described it really well, including all the sane, calm, advice, and the sense of hope.
