It’s so frustrating trying to do something like facial recognition that’s been around long enough that it feels like it should be standard for any program, then find that it is available for PCs, but not for Macs.

Also, this article and most of ACDSee’s other sales pages are careful to discuss the two video editing products after talking about Photo Studio for Mac, leaving the reader with the impression that they will also work, but neither one does. Disappointing, since I purchased the ACDSee Home Pack as a start to replacing all the Adobe software I use, only to find that of the 4 programs, only the subpar one is of use to me.

Re: It’s Time to Stop Drifting and Design the Life You Want

This book couldn't have come at a better time. After an epiphany last year when I realized that I needed to plan my future instead of just letting things happen, my focus this year has been on making plans and following through. So excited to read this and apply it to my life! <3

Re: Origin Still Offering The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection

I just got it a couple weeks ago, but I was told that they are almost out of copies to give away now. Our decision on how to raise the boys was not an easy one, in fact, it really wasn't something that I read in a book or online, although I have used many resources for ideas over the years. I guess in part, it was fueled by my dad's desire for me to think for myself. Learning to think and question was a big part of my growing up, sometimes to the regret of my parents or other adults that had to put up with me, I'm sure. But still, my dad would ask, "Why are you doing this?" And the pat answer wasn't good enough - he didn't want the reasons we're taught, he wanted the reason I was doing whatever. I didn't always understand it, but it sunk in. Don't go along just to go along, don't do something just because it's expected. Think about it, why are you doing it? What do you want from it?

Isn't learning to think for ourselves and to understand our own reasoning part of being an adult? If we have to answer for our choices, then we consider them more. I finally got that. Hopefully it has already started clicking for my children since less of their life is composed of "because we have to" situations that are pretty much only busy work anyway. :)

Re: 12 great vintage sci-fi stories that are available as free ebooks

Looking forward to reading these. I've had stalkers before back when I was single, and still remember how horrible it feels. I can only imagine how difficult it was pursuing this through the courts. I agree with @NP, bullies are bullies and that behavior should never be allowed in children or adults.

Re: A Chance To Win A City Of Secrets HD Promo Code With A Retweet Or Comment

I love point and click games. Instead of packing a laptop, DVD player, and game system, with the apps I have, I just need the iPad.

One of the few apps I've been glad I purchased is AppAdvice. The Apps Gone Free column has especially helped me discover many fun apps that I wouldn't have found otherwise.

Re: Six Signs that Social Media is Dying

Phoenix, I wish it was evolving. To be honest, I think that's the main point of my argument...it hasn't evolved much in close to a year. Seriously, what has come out in the last...oh, let's say the last 9 months, that's different than anything that came before? Not that has a new niche or is a remake of something else, but totally different like StumbleUpon, Delicious, Digg, Twitter, Seesmic, etc. were when they first appeared? Perhaps I'm wrong. Perhaps something has evolved and I just missed it. It's possible, but if it has, I sure haven't heard anyone talking about it.

As for your second paragraph, I actually see just the opposite happening. There's a LOT more of the superficial going on, and although it's possible to cut through to the real conversations, how many new people have the patience to do that? There are more twitter tools now to enable conversations (TweetChat for example), but by and large, spur of the moment conversations about everything from work to baseball happen (on my timeline at least) with much less frequency than they used to.

I'll agree with you that the Wal-Mart argument is weak. I apologize for that, I had meant to use a different example (Barnes and Nobles, where they're rebuilding each store so that it looks like all the rest).

My point really didn't come across well here, it's not about specific sites going mainstream. You're right, that's needed.

I have spam filters for twitter (Topify is great for helping to know who to follow and who not to, and TwitChuck will rate anyone you're curious to look up on their spammer potential) and for e-mail of course. But even so, I spend a good chunk of time making sure someone's not a spammer (after making a mistake and getting a DM from someone which started off, "Hey sexy").

I hope it didn't sound like I'm afraid of the social media landscape changing. If it did, I need to rewrite this. I've loved the changes social media has gone through over the years, from chat rooms (which is where my first online adventures started) to MUDs (the first MMORPGs) to Six Degrees to StumbleUpon, Delicious, Digg, Twitter, etc, etc, etc. :)

Thanks so much for your thoughts! I appreciate you taking the time to write them and hope I explained what I meant a bit better. :)

Re: Six Signs that Social Media is Dying

@Jerry If you didn't delete your comment, could you please repost it (or let me know and I will). Only if they use the failure to make some changes, and not to decide they now have to compete with twitter users to see who can announce news first.

Re: Follow Friday

@Jerry Glad I could share a couple new people with you. The only site where I post in fairly large quantity is StumbleUpon, and I've removed it from most of the sharing sites simply because I can't determine which stumbles are shown (I use SU as a combination book marker and blog...I doubt most people want to see all the sites I bookmark although I wouldn't mind being able to just share the blog part).

Re: Can Sites Be Too Interconnected?

@PABlo I would really, really love to see that MindMap when you finish with it. I'm still trying to decide what I really want connected...and wishing someone would connect things the way I want them to be (ie only draw from my SU blog instead of from all the links I thumb up).

For the time being, I had to keep FriendFeed from posting to twitter to get rid of all the double posting. It's not an ideal set-up, but gets rid of all the doubles, so it will stay this way until I figure exactly what I want posting to where, and how to make that happen. :)

Re: Can Sites Be Too Interconnected?

@Keli, I am only now changing my opinion on this, after fussing about multipost sites for a while.

For sites that I don't visit often, it's nice to be able to have an easy way to change my status, so when I visit them, I don't see something like "More snow on the way! I'm desperate, what's your favorite snow activity." when it's 100 degrees outside and the air conditioner can't keep up with how fast the house is heating up.

For sites like Plurk and twitter on the other hand, I very much prefer individual posts and enjoy communicating with people who are going to be around sometime in the near future, to communicate back (unless they fall asleep while trying to get their little one to rest). :)

Re: Plurk Karma

says @ethnicomm It's a lot better than it was, I think I've actually gone almost 24 hours without plurking without losing karma. I know they've changed how karma works a few times, including changing the time between plurks limit from 4-8 hours to 12 hours. I'll admit, as much as I'd like to see karma end at 50, I doubt that will happen anytime soon, but the rest are things they might consider if enough people ask for them.

Re: Are Your Stumbled Pages Sticky?

@Neal Thank you!
