You agreed to receive email from Ed, so there is no possible way that can be called spam. What Ed is objecting to is people reporting emails that they have opted-in to receive as spam. The solution to your problem is simple. Ignore or delete what you don't want and read the stuff you want. Calling it spam is, in my opinion, low and unethical.

Re: What Everyone Misses About Twitter…

Well, since sending *true* spam is illegal in the US, I think it is important to get the semantics right. I don't disagree that tons of unwanted email is bad, noisy, junky, etc. I do object to the "define spam however you want" issue because in my world, calling someone a spammer is equal to calling them a criminal.

Plus, one of Ed's main points was outrage against people who freely opt-in, but then use the 'this is spam' button to voice thier objection to the content being presented. Marking someone as a spammer when you have freely opted-in to their list is unethical and just plain mean.

Re: Internet Marketing on Life Support

Rick, while I agree with the overall sentiment of your comment, and totally agree with Ryan, I find myself wondering why you chose to specifically name Lynn Terry.

I've followed Lynn for quite some time and consider her to be quite the opposite of a 'guru' wannabe. Many tactics and strategies can be super powerful if one takes the time to do the right things, has a good business foundation, leverages his or her experience, and applies them at the right time. Most people won't, or can't do all of those things, so a super frank super cautious disclaimer is just smart. There is a *context* for everything and it always affects the outcome, I find it very interesting, from a copywriting standpoint, how Glenn crafts his disclaimer message.

I don't know Glenn or his products, but it is entirely possible that he gets *better* long term results by filtering out certain people who are pre-disposed to expect overnight results without work and building a very strong context.

If, for instance, Lance Armstrong sold you a peak performance cycling course on DVD and used the full emotion and passion he has for his techniques and the results they have brought him, would you really expect to get exactly the same results?

Would you fault him then, for stating in the fine print that he is very likely different than you and, very likely, would get much different results?

Re: the worst business advice i’ve received

Found your blog through Twitter, and I'm glad I did. I've noticed the same thing with people I actually know as well as those I observe. There is, of course, the time factor which is huge, but I think there is something else -- the initial income goal.

Single folks can do what is the BEST way to build an online business. They can start with a very small monthly revenue (say $100/month) and build from there. Of course, married-with-kids folks can do the same thing, but their mindset tends to be different. They are more likely to 'swing for the fence' and look for bigger wins up front. The effect is they do more work and see less results at first, but their wins can also be better. Making the transition to full-time is also much, much more risky for married-with-kids folks.

Re: The Secret to Online Business Success Is… Being Single?

Oh, there you go again Terry. I don't push my Tilt to limit as much as you do, but I do a lot. I have Word documents that I refer to and one spreadsheet.

My tilt has become the origin of probably 30-40% of my emails. I don't use "push", but use IMAP with my webhost and that works for me. I just do Send/Receive when I want to check it.

I also keep track of my personal AND professional life in Calendar. In fact, the Calendar is where I keep track of my billing hours for my clients.
