That's because those are people who aren't "contributing to the economy" in approved ways. Capitalism is the driving force behind the disdain for them.

Re: I Went From Working Odd Jobs To Quality Assurance Manual Tester

How inspiring! In fact, they squabble over it, and one or the other will often camp out on it, claiming it as territory.

I had one of those really expensive stainless steel cat fountains, and it was just too high-maintenance. My cats were timid and didn't want to drink out of it, and it was too heavy for me to lift up from the floor easily - I had to ask my partner to do it. They still got up on the bathroom counter and demanded that we turn on the water for them, of course!

I happened to run across an iPad app called Game for Cats one day and installed it on a whim. Two of my daughter's cats went absolutely BONKERS for it. It has three modes, but on their favorite one a little "mouse" runs around the screen, and every time they hit it with their paws there's a squeaking noise. The cats go nuts, trying to figure out where the mouse went when it runs off the screen, looking under the iPad, sitting poised and ready to pounce when it returns, etc. One of them will bite the younger one (her son!) if he gets in her way. She gets so excited that she starts biting the iPad case, even (it's very durable, so I don't care - and I have a very strong screen protector in place, so their paws aren't going to hurt anything). The third cat (the only one who has definitely been a successful rodent killer in real life) sniffed and walked away to watch the first two at a distance, as if to say, "You're ridiculous. There's no scent, so there's no mouse." (He's the same way about laser pointers.) My boyfriend insisted that his cat does NOT play games, but he loves Game for Cats too. Now every time any of those three cats see my iPad, they immediately try to get into it to find the mouse.

Re: I was a Manic Pixie Dream Girl, but now I’m busy casting spells for myself

I was born in 1966, so I'm a little older than you. C.J. Cherryh and Andre Norton came to mind along with L'Engle, Anne McCaffrey's books were out in the 70s. Susan Cooper comes to mind, and Kate Wilhelm. Connie Willis was just getting started. Marion Zimmer Bradley definitely counts. I didn't read many mysteries back then, but I'm fairly certain that women were well-represented there, too - if you looked.

In short, heroines were definitely out there for readers, although the YA field was weak compared to what it is like now.

And still, I can definitely relate to the author's point. The default position in our culture is for women to be in a supporting role. It can take a long time, and be very difficult, to shake that role - many females never do.

Re: Vanderbilt University Christians: Why Can’t We Discriminate?

Private schools that accept students who use federal student loans and other government-backed financial aid have to abide by the same non-discrimination laws as public universities.

As I recall, there are a very few (and very small) exceptions, and they blow their own horns loudly on that topic, such as Hillsdale College in Michigan.

Re: Crazy: 90 Percent of People Don't Know How to Use CTRL+F - Alexis Madrigal - Technology - The Atlantic

I think it's an issue of not only being a touch typist, but also of when you switched from a typewriter to a word processor. I switched back in Wordstar days (or before, actually - I can't remember the name of the word processor that came with the Coleco Adam Daddy bought when I was in middle school) and became truly proficient with a DOS version of WordPerfect, but also used a version of Word on a VAX before Windows 3.0 limped into something approaching stability and I gave Word for Windows a try.

Thus, I was very much aware of the values of keyboard shortcuts - most of those products didn't use mice. (I had used Apple computers in high school, and even an early Macintosh on one job - but those hardly counted for "real work.") In any case, once you've used keyboard shortcuts extensively, you're unlikely to ever change your habits much. (BTW, I'm 44.)

Re: Engadget's back to school 2011 sweepstakes: we're giving away $3,000 worth of gear... 15 times!

For that, I'd sign up for more student loans!

Re: Engadget's back to school guide 2011: printers

I've been HP faithful for years, but I'm starting to consider straying from the fold.

Re: Since you were asking: The Door into Starlight

I nearly forgot! My daughter has not yet read the Middle Kingdoms books, which is a crime. She has not yet been converted to ebooks, so I cannot but hope that the whole series (including Starlight) will see print again, so I can get copies for her too. Thank you!

Re: Since you were asking: The Door into Starlight

I don't doubt you about the sales figures on the Door series - I just have to think that word didn't ever get out to people, or when it did, they couldn't find the books to buy them (I've certainly recommended them to many, many people over the years). They're just such marvelous books!

After reading a friend's copies of the first three books many, many years ago, I tried in vain to find my own copies. Every time I spotted a used bookstore anywhere, I HAD to check to see if it had a copy of one of the books! When Meisha Merlin announced that they were publishing them, I was SO HAPPY! And as soon as the first volume was available, my partner bought a copy for me (it's so lonesome now, the little orphan). When I found out that you were selling the first three volumes as ebooks, again, I bought copies right away. So believe me, I have absolutely no qualms about doing anything to show my readiness to buy The Door Into Starlight!

I notice that in addition to the three separate books, there's an Omnibus edition. Are the contents the same in each? Also, do you have any idea when Sirronde's World 2 might be released? How do the other Middle Kingdoms Tales (Lior and the Sea and the Sirronde's World novellas) fit chronologically with the Tales of the Five?

Thank you!
Cynthia Armistead

Re: The Nourished Life: Monthly Drawing Win a Lodge Enameled Cast Iron 6-Quart Dutch Oven!
