The absolute fear that comes from these teachers is what strikes me. Before becoming a teacher, I was a legal aid lawyer in domestic violence organizations. One common denominator is almost all battered people is that they are afraid even after they leave the situation. This speaks of the terror (yes, I said *terror*) that must have been inflicted on these teachers. What in the hell are the students going through!?

And as a special education teacher, this whole thing makes me want to vomit. If the kids aren't getting accommodations/modifications and they can't do the work...then what? Are they just getting passed along? (My guess). These kids already came from the lowest of the low schools and likely from the poorest of the poor areas...what hope do they have?

Just a nerdy special ed teacher thing--it's actually IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) that they would be in violation of. I am writing an IEP tonight, in fact!

I had to stop reading this part way through because it made me so upset. I will finish it but I feel sick right now. Bless you (and your stomach) for writing this...I don't know how we all aren't ripping nails out with our teeth and spitting them down Snyder's throat....

That certainly wasn't the only reason! I had plans to work as a prosecutor, preferably in the sexual crimes unit (yes, that was "big money" to me). Those jobs were not open to me as nepotism runs rampant where I live (perhaps everywhere?) My other dreams were to work in some sort of governmental agency but there were just no jobs there. So I ended up in small firms which offered no benefits, low pay, etc.

One of the statements in the article says that the perception of the rich and powerful lawyer but that reality is "grim" for "some" attorneys. That "grim" should actually read "barbaric" and "some" should read "most". I went into law school as a naive 22 year old, thinking I would make big money. That is simply not going to happen to the majority of lawyers. Since most law firms are small firms, they pay like any small business...and most lawyers I worked for were not the generous types.

I did have one somewhat generous boss but he couldn't get his clients to pay their legal bills and then he couldn't pay me. That is yet something else that is not taught in law school--you have to get clients who can pay. Law school assumes that you will get in with a big firm that will always have a cash cow corporate client and that just isn't true. So you end up with lawyers starting their own firms and begging for clients. Or else you fall into the cycle of taking appointments that are a) extremely difficult to get and b) don't pay very much.

If you do get one of the "brass ring" jobs, you will belong to that firm 24/7...don't kid yourself. It's kind of like a lose-lose proposition. The smartest thing I ever did was to change careers. Now I get to warn my students of the dangers of going to law school :)

I'm a teacher of the visually impaired and the kids have told me about dreams of scary voices or my voice or their friends' voices. They've only ever talked about sounds. The ones with low vision just "see" in the dreams the way they see regularly as far as I can tell...that is, I am just a big blurry blob :)

The game was magnificent! It did not stop snowing the entire time and it was freezing but a lot of fun! We were Red Wings fans in a sea of Leafs fan but those folks couldn't have been nicer. The night before, downtown Ann Arbor had its first NYE block party and the place was packed. Great two days for our little town! I hope the visitors had a good time here.

My preview was for a movie about Jesus and it was all in Spanish with no subtitles. I got the gist though.

It wasn't a bad movie. I go to Title boxing and they have been pushing it at every class so I decided to see it. Had some genuinely funny moments, some sweet moments...but the whole "BJ" thing could have gone away. Seriously? If you want to do a sex joke name, at least have named him Santorum or something a little more creative.

You ain't kidding about Nestor. I was hysterical when I watched it as a kid. Then I watched it as an adult, figuring it would have lost its sting (kind of how I was terrified at the Day After in 1983 and then wasn't in 2003). Nope. Not even a little. It was still as heart breaking as it was when I saw it as a kid.

One of the nice touches of this movie is when Clark is watching old movies in the attic and you see someone in a Navy uniform. So *someone* was in the Navy, just not Rusty.

I tried to get Buddy (my Jack Russell/beagle mutt baby) into one of those once. That didn't work. At all. I tried to get him into a big purse, too and that didn't work either. I finally caught on that my little four-legged son wasn't going into anything that required him to be off the ground. :)
