Freedom of religion is about what is between your ears, not what you do to another person's healthy normal body. That other person has freedom of religion also, including the freedom to be the sort of Jew that does not circumcise. About 20% of the people I meet at large protests - to which we all have traveled at great personal expense to engage in the fight to protect children from genital cutting - are from Jewish families. At the recent Intact Global event in Los Angeles, half the speakers were Jewish.

How does Bloom propose we do this "double-blinded randomized controlled trial" on infant circumcision and autism. Surely, we can't force non-consenting minors into random groups to possibly be subjected to amputation of up to half their sensual skin? Surely he understands how haphazard circumcision outcomes are? Surely, Bloom knows that someone whose private parts have been reduced is not "blinded" to the fact?

That females have dramatically higher HIV incidence than males is consistent with a circumcision study done in Uganda in 2009 by Wawer, Gray , et al. They found the HIV+ males they circumcised infected their female partners 50% MORE often than the HIV+ men they left intact did.

Any intervention may be ethically imposed with only proxy (parental) consent IF waiting for the patient's own informed consent would lead to net harm, and WHEN less-destructive options are exhausted.

Forced genital cutting on healthy male, female, or intersex children fails this test decidedly. Nothing else we let doctors do fails this test.

In the framing of this ethical question, the parent/guardian is the arbiter of what constitutes net harm. The only way to come down on the side of forced genital cutting is to place zero value on preserving a healthy normal intact body, and to privilege claims of circumcision benefits with undue credibility not afforded to the arguments regarding risks and drawbacks.

Foreskin feels REALLY good. Seriously, it's the best part. Informed adults can decide for themselves.

All forced genital reduction surgery on healthy male, female, and intersex children who can't offer informed consent is unethical. And infant circumcision outcomes are obscenely haphazard. Check out the troubling photo gallery at "Results for the Global Survey of Circumcision Harm."

Genital surgery only when they ask for it.

Circumcision alters sex dramatically. Only the owner of a body has standing to consent to destructive modification with no pressing medical need.

Every person whose healthy genitals were cut in childhood has every reason to be disgusted and angry, but less than 2% of circumcisions globally have anything to do with Judaism. Opposition to forced genital cutting is about human rights and sexual self-determination, not about religion.

Informed male, female, and intersex adults can decide for themselves, unless we fail to protect them as children.

I can vouch for the claim about men undertaking foreskin restoration. I personally help about 5000 men per year to regrow slack skin to undo some of the predictable sexual damage of childhood circumcision.

This piece is unbelievable. And I don't mean that in a good way.

For starters, 80% is a high estimate for US ADULTS who've been cut. The current rate for infants is closer to 50/50. And globally, 95% of the secular world does not circumcise.

The cut/intact UTI difference has never been reported in a population that was instructed in proper care of normal genitals. That is, LEAVE IT ALONE. The AAP says that "only the owner should ever retract a foreskin. Only clean what is seen."

Circumcision carries a 100% risk of loss of the most pleasure-receptive part of the penis. Circumcision alters sex DRAMATICALLY. And UNintended consequences are obscenely common - like pits and gouges to the glans, skin bridges, smelly stitch tunnels, asymmetry, jagged painful truncated vein, painful tightness upon erection, adhesion of the scar to the underlying shaft, zero inner skin remaining (scar line at corona), very little outer skin skin remaining (coarse hair growing to the scar line), skin tags, malapposition, meatal stenosis, irregular scaring, excessive glans keratinization, etc.

Forced genital cutting is unethical. Informed adults can decide for themselves.

I hope more men will speak out so potential parents will see a reason to resist conforming to past norms.

I make my living helping men restore their foreskins - 45,000 clients since 2003. I would very much prefer to do anything else.

For those who were too busy to read the whole well-crafted article, let me sum up:
- Circumcision alters sex dramatically, even when it goes right. But it often goes
wrong.
- Forced genital cutting is unethical for healthy male, female, and intersex children.
- Informed adults can decide for themselves.
- Circumcised men can undo some of the damage through non-surgical foreskin restoration.
