THIS was a much more fitting tribute. From Annie Lennox to Gary Oldman, a close friend, to David's band playing that quick medley with those images of him all around, to a tasteful and respectful performance of Life on Mars, to that last shot of him saluting...lovely and done with heart.

Re: Lady Gaga: 'My Whole Career Is a Tribute to David Bowie'

I love this comment...Lady Gaga as Angie Bowie!!

Re: Lady Gaga: 'My Whole Career Is a Tribute to David Bowie'

Be afraid, Elton John. Be very afraid. I'm sure she's already got her crazy glasses, feather boa, electric boots, and mohair suit already picked out. I'm sure Intel can provide the virtual yellow brick road and possibly give the illusion of a gap between her teeth for her close-up. Hey, she can even take a "selfie" of her crocodile (see what I did there?) tears as she gets ready for her shilling of your good name. Thankfully there are many real tributes all over Youtube, heartfelt versions of Bowie's songs by artists who seem to have better understood what Bowie meant to his fans. I won't ever watch this god awful travesty of a tribute again.

Re: TRUE BLOOD 2.12 - "Beyond Here Lies Nothing"

Dan - Everything revolves around Sookie in the books as they are told from her viewpoint. As for TV Sookie vs. Book Sookie, I'm not sure if it's the way Sookie is written in the show and/or the delivery by Anna Paquin, but the character, for me, is annoying. Interestingly enough, I find Anna Paquin to be much better when she's acting with anyone other than Stephen Moyer. The two of them together...not so much. I'm open to the changes AB is making except for the leads, but that's not to say I'm not having a really good time with the show!

You are correct about Club Dead and who might be responsible for Bill's disappearance, with a few big changes for why that might be the case, that is.

Re: TRUE BLOOD 2.12 - "Beyond Here Lies Nothing"

I found Sam to be extremely boring in season 1, so season 2 was a big improvement for me. It will be interesting to see how "bad" his real parents are given that his adopted parents abandoned him.

For me, the problem with the Maryann end was that it came so late. Way too much time was spent building up to her exit. Who could have thought that orgies would become boring? For me, when the other action was in Dallas, I came to see the Bon Temps scenes as filler.

Dan - Hmm, not sure I can say that the TV show is always better than the books. There are things I definitely like better about the books, well, to be more specific, there are three things I like better about the books...Sookie, Eric, and Bill. Sookie is nowhere near as annoying in the books as she is in the show. Bill is not the hero in every situation, in fact, quite the opposite, making him far more interesting in the books. Eric is not the villain of the story, crafty and somewhat manipulative, but up front about it with a killer dry sense of humor (which we do get to see a teensy bit with Skarsgard's performance) and a hint of what may be a real heart.

For those reasons, and mostly only for those reasons, I wish Alan Ball would keep with the books regarding those characters. I'm in favor of layered characters and not pushing the "you see, he's the hero!" and "you see, he's the bad guy!" on the audience. Give us some ambiguity we can chew on and let us make up our own minds!

Oh, and I did see CH's cameo. I'm sure it must have been surreal for her to be at Merlotte's, a place she created in her own mind.

Who took Bill? The FOTS is an interesting idea. I think we are meant to believe it's a vampire because of the gloves with the handling of the silver. I think we're also being led to the conclusion it's Eric because of his conversation with the Queen, but my money is on Lorena. H*ll hath no fury like a woman, or female vampire, scorned.

Re: TRUE BLOOD 2.12 - "Beyond Here Lies Nothing"

Dan - Because it was bugging me about the Queen's age, I found that the casting call for the role described the part as a 500 year old vampire, but the books say she is around Eric's age, just a little older at 1,100 years or so. Check out this site http://www.trueblood-online...

In the books (sorry if that gets too obnoxious to keep saying), Stan is the Sheriff and Barry comes to work for him after his gift is revealed. Stan is not a cowboy type either, but a nerdy type. I guess Barry could end up working for Isabel though or more likely, we'll never see or hear from him again.

Re: TRUE BLOOD 2.12 - "Beyond Here Lies Nothing"

Dan - I'm fairly certain that I read the Queen's age somewhere, but will have to dig for that. (Or the books have again muddled the storylines on the show for me) I do think Eric let her overpower him because of the politics or as you say, out of respect, not because of her strength.

I agree that it looks like Alan Ball put on the brakes when he knew he would have at least another season to work with and left many characters and stories dangling. Speaking of, what about Barry the Bellboy, by the way? Why does he taste different too? Are all telepaths gifted with the glowy hand thing and power? It's hard to believe there will be even more characters and storylines added in next season when there's still so much to think/talk about with what we have already.

Re: TRUE BLOOD 2.12 - "Beyond Here Lies Nothing"

Now that I think about it, having Sam go to Eric was to get Eric to the Queen, so we could learn she is making Eric push the V. Still, lame. Also, how is it that the much-younger Queen knows more about a maenad than the 1,000 year old Eric? Was the Queen implying that drinking Sookie's blood has the same effect as drinking vampire blood, that is, it makes you fall in love?

Yes, Chris Bauer was a little OTT at times, but I still enjoyed the character this season paired up with Jason. Hmm, maybe it was because he was hanging with Jason that I liked him. I don't think I could take too much of him next season though. Plus, I have a feeling Jason won't be quite so happy next season if he's dealing with his killing Eggs (thank you, Jason!).

I hope someone snatches up Michelle Forbes to do something awesome because she is really good and had the story not been so drawn out, I would have enjoyed her performance much more.

We've all said it before, but I really do wish the Dallas story had been the finale. How about at the same time Godric was on the roof meeting the sun, someone snatched Bill from his room? I would have loved to have Godric's end and then fade to black for the season. We already heard Lorena's parting words to Bill at that point. I know that's not enough of a cliffhanger for AB and I guess we're supposed to wonder if it was Eric or Lorena that took Bill though. Oh, well, it was just a thought.

Re: TRUE BLOOD 2.12 - "Beyond Here Lies Nothing"

Dan - Again, I agree with your analysis of an episode. I thought the episode was uneven and a bit boring in spots with the all the loose ends being tidied up. I'm extremely disappointed that after spending a few minutes in the last episode having Sam go to Eric for help and making sure we knew Eric had Sam's cell phone number that nothing came of that! Instead Eric is left playing an endless game of Yahtzee with the Queen, who, by the way, seemed a little better played by ERW this time around. Alexander Skarsgard is really good and I'm disapointed by the Eric drought since "I Will Rise Up."

As for the Bill cliffhanger at the end, I'm so relieved that Bill will be missing for at least part of the season. I'm not sure I can take anymore of his highhandedness with Sookie. "Sookie is mahn!"...yes, yes, we know that, Bill, for the love of God. I dearly hope we'll find out exactly why he knows Hadley and why the Queen is so familiar and interested in Sookie. Bill has some 'splaining to do, that's for sure. (Book readers already kinda sorta know the possible answers here)

Jason, this season was pure gold. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Ryan Kwanten was superb this season. Also, who knew Andy's character could be so much fun too?

I really loved Michelle Forbes' acting, but never was I more excited to see a character be killed off than when Maryann bought it. I love that they had Sam be the one to do the deed. Sam Trammel is another actor who really upped his game this season. Sam, the character, last season was meh for me.

From what I've read in post-finale's interviews with AB, we will have an interesting season next year. Maybe a Godric flashback or two, much more Eric (yay!), werewolves, a new evil vampire, a jealous spiteful shifter, oh my!

Re: TRUE BLOOD 2.11 - "Frenzy"

I wasn't thrilled with this episode either. Regarding Eric flying...in season 1, Bill told Sookie that vampires can have different abilities, like flying.

I've been reading reviews and blogs about the episode and people seem to either have loved ERW's Queen or hated it with not much in between. I felt a little sorry for her with all that exposition she had to deliver. What a bunch of gobbleygook her maenad talk was!

Glad to see that Lafayette admitted to having Eric dreams and Eric throwing out to Bill that Bill had given Sookie his blood the very night they met. I was worried we weren't going to get the tie ins for those two things.

So why wasn't Daphne, a shifter, a good enough sacrifice?

Why oh why, didn't they have the Godric/Dallas storyline at the end of the season? I've been saying for quite some time that I was done with the maenad thing. I guess Bill will save Sookie...again...for the end of the season. Borrrrinnnggg.

Oh, and an egg? Really? An egg? I know I sort of zoned out during the Queen's speeches, but I don't remember any talk of the God hatching.

Re: TRUE BLOOD 2.10 - "New World In My View"

Maybe I'm the only who feels this way, but could it be those record numbers that tuned in this week were expecting more of the awesomeness they saw last week? I wonder if the record numbers will jump again next week or we'll see a dip because of the over the top craziness of this week. Should be interesting to see.

Regarding Barry, it's interesting that Lorena had the same question about Barry that Maryann had about Sookie..."What are you?" Will they give us an explanation? Book stuff...Sookie really is something else, but Barry is just a telepath, so I'll be curious to see if they change that somehow and make Barry have that hand glowy thing too (provided they even bring the character back at all).

I don't know...maybe introducing a whole different supernatural being in the mix in such a big way was too much? It was the idea of vampires existing openly amongst humans and trying to assimilate into society that I found so intriguing with the introduction of this show. I loved the furtherance of that theme with the vampires this season and I loved the maker/makee relationships it highlighted. I even thoroughly enjoyed the FOTS parts in season 2 because they were crucial to showing that not everyone wanted the vampires to live out in the open. They lost me on the whole orgy/sacrifice/zombie thing though.

Re: TRUE BLOOD 2.10 - "New World In My View"

Dan, you were ahead of the curve last week mentioning Sookie's possible "other" abilities. Well done! Eric has mentioned this season that he feels Sookie is not human...food for thought.

I couldn't agree more with you about this episode. I sure would have liked to have had more closure with the Dallas storyline and after being so moved by Godric's departure and Eric's grief, I felt a little cheated that we didn't see Eric at all (other than in a Sookie dream, not that I'm complaining about that 2 minutes or so, mind you). So, yes, it did feel as if they jumped quickly and precipitiously right into the craziness that is Maryann. Sookie is the saviour of all and conqueror of all things supernatural, even across state lines? Eh.

I found myself laughing and enjoying the fun of this episode, but I definitely thought it was because this episode was so bad, it was good...if that makes any sense.

Re: TRUE BLOOD 2.9 - "I Will Rise Up"

Bob - Bill did tell Sookie after their first sexual encounter, as a good recycling vampire should, to be sure to take extra vitamins/iron so she wouldn't get weak (something along those lines) and he said she would notice an increased libido. Never did he say anything about how the blood she had taken from him BEFORE they had sex would have made him more attractive to her. Was that a deliberate omission on Bill's part or something AB forgot about?

I also hope the Bill/Sookie relationship is disrupted by Eric. Frankly, the only time Bill interests me is when he's actually acting like a vampire. Recycling vampires? Really? How many paper products can he go through if he doesn't eat?

Dan, the books do say that after taking a vampire's blood, it temporarily gives the human greater strength...which might actually explain Lafayette's giving Eggs such a spectactular beatdown in the last episode (Eggs is a big dude, I expected him to give as good as he got, but he didn't). I don't remember Sookie throwing around a vampire in the pilot though. I only remember her fighting the couple that held Bill in the parking lot to take his blood.

Re: TRUE BLOOD 2.9 - "I Will Rise Up"

The books refer to the blood thing as blood bonding and Eric tricks Sookie the same way in the book. I'm hoping that AB will have Sookie question her attraction to Bill if her dreams and attraction to Eric really, really upset her because she feels it's completely against her will. You would think you would question your vampire boyfriend about why he might have omitted that bit of info from before? Also, does this mean Lafayette is dreaming about Eric too? ;)

Re: TRUE BLOOD 2.9 - "I Will Rise Up"

Since Bill glamoured Jessica's parents and sister, why can't Jessica just get in touch with them and explain what happened? You are right, it is frustrating when it makes no sense.

Even if the vampire community didn't want to press the issue of the bombing because they were worried about evidence that Steve's father had been killed by vampires, there are still humans that were killed in the bombing. Sheesh.

On another note, if one drop of Eric's blood makes her superficially attracted to Eric, what about Bill's blood Sookie drank BEFORE they had been intimate. Was Sookie more attracted and more easily swayed to Bill because of the blood she drank on their second meeting when Bill saved her life? Do you think Sookie will get around to calling Bill out on that one or is it just an oversight?

Re: TRUE BLOOD 2.9 - "I Will Rise Up"

Dan, I didn't even think about the Newlins not getting arrested for the bombing and being charged for the deaths of both vampires and humans! Do you think maybe Sarah Newlin will come looking for Jason in Bon Temps? By the looks of it, her and crazy Steve aren't getting along very well. Loved the mark on Steve's forehead where Jason nailed him with a paintball.

Loved the Godric/Eric scene on the rooftop. Eric's anger, denial, and then despair at losing what I suppose is the equivalent of his father was heartbreaking and very well acted between ASkars and newcomer Hyde. Loved the spiritual feeling of Godric's end too and the discussion about God with Sookie. Well done, AB, well done.

I'm so over the Maryann storyline. For me, it's just dragged on too long with no real developments or furtherance. You are so right too about Tara...why isn't she much more suspicious of crazy Maryann! I'm thinking the bloody feet and the bunny she killed with her bare hands would have been one of a million times Tara would have bounced.

This episode did feel a little like the calm before the storm before me. I think we're in for a wild last three episodes.

Re: http://danowen.blogspot.com/2009/08/true-blood-27-release-me.html

Fair point...definitely not as handsome as RK, but sometimes those clueless expressions of RK are dead on for GWB. I'm thinking of when Jason was at the Newlin house for dinner and Steve said there was a war going on out there. Jason so cutely turns around to look out the window. "No, not right now, Jason." Lol

Re: http://danowen.blogspot.com/2009/08/true-blood-27-release-me.html

I'm going to say that Maryann will have to be forced to leave and that she can't be killed. Looking ahead to the previews for the upcoming episodes, it looks like Bill tries to deal with her. Should be interesting...

Okay, Andy may not be immune, but why isn't he completely under her influence like everyone else? You may have hit on something, Dan. Being drunk beforehand makes him less susceptible to her voodoo. Drinks on me at Merlotte's!

I've never seen Kwanten in anything before this, so he's a skilled himbo actor then? I swear he must be channeling Dubya sometimes because the facial expressions kinda remind me of our former president.

We need more Pam in the next episodes. Can't she come to Dallas to help Eric out?

Re: http://danowen.blogspot.com/2009/08/true-blood-27-release-me.html

Yes, we definitely have to allow for the TB-isms where Sookie's "gift" is concerned :)

I can't wait to see what Maryann can do to the vampires further down the road since Daphne mentioned that she can do other things to supes since she can't control their minds. Will they be afraid of her? Will they be able to get rid of her?

Maybe, as you say, Dan, all of Maryann's partygoers are indeed under her spell and can't remember being called to her parties. I wonder why Andy seems to be immune to her. I guess Sam is waiting to talk to Andy in private about what he saw and let poor Andy know he's not crazy after all.

I love Jason this season. The actor portraying him is a master at playing the kinda dense but adorable Jason. Well done, Ryan Kwanten! I guess Jason goes back to help save Sookie after Sarah tells him what Steve said about her and Jason.

Even though we could have used more time devoted to how Bill arrived at his decision to reject Lorena and her lifestyle, I don't think I can take any more of her eyebrows in those flashbacks. Maybe it would have been better to make the time frame a little more spread out for the flashbacks? It seemed too close together in time between the bloodbath of last week and the smoking jacket, reading, and playing records Bill of this week. No worries though. I'm watching this crazy, wild ride of a show no matter what they do...I'm hooked!

Re: http://danowen.blogspot.com/2009/08/true-blood-27-release-me.html

I personally thought the Bill/Lorena flashback was a bit overwrought. I wish there had been more of a transition between flashback Bill of last week and flashback Bill of this week. At what point did he decide he didn't enjoy their joint escapades? He sure looked like he was having a darn good time last week and it wasn't all Lorena that was being sadistic. Maybe a flashback that showed his breaking point or when he finally realized they had gone too far? Oh, well. Sorry, but Bill bores me to tears and the only blip of excitement was last week's craziness.

I guess Isabel's science experiment has gone horribly wrong. Speaking of Hugo...I'm also a little baffled by Sookie's inability to "hear" Hugo earlier. Her skill does seem quite unreliable when the writers want it to be. It seems to me that if you saw that look on Steve's face when he mentioned Jason, you would be honing in on his thoughts real quick and hard.

Barry got a little turned around in the hallway there...who grabbed him? My first thought was that Stan grabbed him (darn that alternate book universe in my head again!), but other places I've been reading seem to think it's Lorena that grabbed him into the room.

Hopefully, the once smart Tara will finally put all it all together where Maryann is concerned. Do all the partygoers who can't remember the orgies they're attending lose their minds before they get in the car and drive to the parties? If not, wouldn't they remember going to the party and then blacking out? From what Arlene describes as her encounter with Terry, she doesn't have any recollection of actually going/driving to the orgy. Tara and Eggs remember right up until they see Maryann. Any thoughts on that?

Re: http://danowen.blogspot.com/2009/07/true-blood-26-hard-hearted-hannah.html

Interesting question, Dan. I'm guessing before the "great revelation" drained/murdered humans were just unsolved homocide cases. Maybe the vampires are expected to be held accountable from this point on as part of revealing themselves to live out in the open freely?

I do hope that they explore Bill's journey from what looks to be his apparent eager participation in killing his victims to mainstreaming. I understand that before True Blood, the drink, he still had to get blood from people, but at what point, did he not enjoy it quite as much as he did when he was with Lorena?

I didn't care very much for the FOTS subplot until this week's episode. Sarah and Steve...yikes! Unfortunately, the parallel universe in my head already knows who the traitor is, but some indications are that they may do it differently in the show.

Poor Jason, his abstinence lasted all of a few hours.

Re: http://danowen.blogspot.com/2009/07/true-blood-26-hard-hearted-hannah.html

I ended up reading the Sookie Stackhouse books a few weeks ago and I wish I hadn't. It is, as Dan says, like having a "weird 'parallel universe' version existing side-by-side" in my head! It's more than a little distracting to be honest. Alan Ball really is using the books loosely to craft his TV show and it's annoying that I kinda sorta know what's coming or what may be coming. My own darn fault, of course!

Very good review, Dan. I really love this show. I like all the stories they have going...except for the Maryann one (we've seen so many orgies now, it's not even remotely shocking). I feel much more interested in the characters that have all congregated in Dallas at this point (with the exception of the awesome Lafayette and Pam). Poor Sam though...so unlucky at love. He finally finds someone he can relate to and she's a pig!

Whoa, Bill! And here I was thinking he was so, so boring. Looks like Lorena brought out the worst in him. How did he get from that to "we recycle in this house"? Still for me, the vampire to watch is Eric. Sneaky little thing, isn't he? I love the beginning sequence with Eric so jaded at feeding from the willing. I guess the thrill would be gone after 1,000 years. I hope we get to see some Eric/Godric scenes. It would be fun to see how Eric acts around his maker.

Re: ROBIN HOOD 3.13 – "Something Worth Fighting For" (Part 2 of 2)

Well, that's that. I won't be watching a new season, if there is one. I watched mainly and at times, exclusively for Guy and from the poll results, so did a lot of others. I'm a little bummed that the show could have been more, better, lasted longer with the same actors, etc., but what's done is done. I do appreciate that the ending tied up the loose ends with the original characters and gave our Guy a dignified ending...final redemption. Still, it coulda been a contender and I can't help but feel that it fell short starting with last season's finale.

Re: TRUE BLOOD 2.2 - "Keep This Party Going"

I agree, Dan, the reasoning is not there. If we're supposed to believe the vamps are integrated into society, why can't they go back home after they have their "impulses" under control? In Jessica's case, she probably should stay away from home though...she has issues. It's fun to see the pseudo teenage parenting with Bill. Speaking as a mom of a teenage girl, good luck Bill, you're going to need it.
